Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the man who created the DeLorean?

Answer: John Zachary DeLorean

John DeLorean was a high-management level employee at the General Motors Company, before he left to pursue his own interests in the automobile industry. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funds, pressure from the British government, and alleged drug dealing/smuggling, DeLorean was forced to end his dream.

He was to make a comeback into the automobile world with a new car as well as a watch company. Unfortunately, none of those new dreams saw the light of day as he passed away in the year 2004.
2. What kind of a drivetrain did the DeLorean DMC-12 have?

Answer: Rear-wheel drive

The rear-wheel drive system usually involves an engine in the front of the vehicle, but had to be slightly re-thought due to the fact that the engine of the DMC was in the back of the car. A driveshaft, connected to the rear tires, controlled the rear-wheel drive system.

Some advantages of the rear-wheel drive included a smaller turning radius, superior handling in normal weather patterns, and a low cost to make and maintain. The disadvantages, however, include less traction on non-dry surfaces, and excessive skidding. To compensate for the skidding, John DeLorean made the rear wheels on his car larger to make some extra weight, that prevents skidding.
3. For the average car-owner, owning a DeLorean might have been troublesome, especially when they entered a gas station to fill up. They might have looked on the side of the car to find nothing. Where should they have be looking, to find the gas tank?

Answer: The trunk

The trunk could have posed some trouble for the first time Delorean owner as well because unlike most standard cars, the DMC's trunk was on the front of the car. Since the gas tank was in the front, the engine was in the back. Its fuel efficiency was estimated to be around twelve liters per one hundred kilometers.
4. To complete the rugged good looks of the DMC-12, an uncommon exterior was incorporated into its design. What was the exterior of the DeLorean made of?

Answer: Stainless steel

The stainless steel of the car was a respectable feature. Stainless never had the risk of rusting, and all it needed to stay shiny was a good cleaning. The problem of the design was revealed when the car was forced to undergo a crash test. At 40 miles/hour the car crumpled into a furrowed mass of metal. That happened because of the fact that stainless steel could not have crumple zones added to its design.
5. Which of the following styles of DeLorean had Rich Weissensel, the maker of the DeLorean time machine from "Back To The Future", not made?

Answer: DeLorean Airplane

Since the mid 1980s, Rich Weissensel has been one of the foremost modders of John Z. DeLorean's dream car. Among his creations using a DeLorean include the "Back to the Future" Delorean time-machine, a convertible, a hovercraft, a DeLorean monster truck, and a Delorean limousine.
6. Were there any right-hand drive DeLoreans built?

Answer: Yes

The Delorean Motor company asked a company called Wooler Hodec to make a handful of those right-hand drive cars. In the end, roughly 20 of the right-hand drive DeLoreans were produced before the Hodec Company closed its doors. Two are known to exist in the entirety of Great Britain.
7. If the DeLorean were to roll over and land on its top, would a person be able to escape, seeing as the car had gull-wing doors?

Answer: Yes

Despite the popular belief that if the DeLorean overturned, a person would be trapped, the DeLorean Motor Company decided to test the theory for themselves. The Lotus motor company placed one of their own engineers in an overturned DeLorean to see if he could escape.

He was able to, thus eliminating that fear. The crash-test was still the biggest apsect that led to fear in the DeLorean team.
8. After acquiring enough money to save the DeLorean Motor Company, one more thing was needed to save the company. What would have been needed to save the car company?

Answer: Mr. DeLorean's signature

Due to some horrible timing, John DeLorean was arrested for drug-trafficking the exact day that he could have saved his car company. He had acquired the money legitimately and had 24 hours to pay and keep his company alive. All that was between the demise and survival of the company was Mr. DeLorean's signature.

Unfortunately, the signature was never given, and the company folded in 1983.
9. In which of the following items of pop-culture did a DeLorean never appear in?

Answer: "South Park" televison show

Apart from the "Back to the Future" films, the DMC-12 appeared in several other movies and TV shows, including "The Wedding Singer", "The Simpsons", "Big Fat Liar", "Family Guy", "Monster Garage", "Stargate Atlantis", "Fairly Odd Parents", and "Donnie Darko".

It has also appeared in at least a dozen video games including "Carmageddon 2", "Resident Evil 2", "Duke Nukem: Time to Kill", "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City", and "Scarface: The World Is Yours". In "The Simpsons", the famous character Troy Mcclure was seen recklessly driving the DMC-12 along a highway.

In "The Wedding Singer" Drew Barrymore's boyfriend, in the film, could be seen driving one, and in "Gran Turismo 4", the DMC-12 was an unlockable car gained after completing the first ten driving missions of the game.
10. The sale of new DeLoreans were limited to the years of 1981, 1982 and 1983.

Answer: False

Despite going backrupt in 1983, the DeLorean Motor Company established several service stations throughout Canada and the United States. Their main purpose was to keep the DeLorean alive, using the most modern technologies available. The refurbished DeLoreans could go faster than the originals, and contained modern touches, such as satellite radio, and surround sound systems. Most of the refurbished DeLoreans came with a short warranty in case the automobile failed.
