Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Besides being known as the "Church of All Nations" what additional name is it known by?

Answer: Basilica of the Agony

The site where the modern church building sits has been in use since the fourth century. Byzantines first built a church there to commemorate the praying of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before his crucifixion .
2. What church marks the place according to tradition where Mary the mother of Jesus went into 'eternal sleep'?

Answer: Church of the Dormition

The present church is only one hundred years old and located on Mount Zion. The full name in Latin is Dormitio Beatae Mariae Virgins.
3. What church is known for having a footprint of Jesus in the rock of its floor?

Answer: Church of the Ascension

This church was destroyed by Saladin and converted into a mosque which it still is to this day. However when you visit the Mount of Olives you can still go into this shrine-like cupola and see the footprint of fame where (as legend claims) Jesus took his last step before ascending to heaven.
4. What church on the Mount of Olives looks like it is straight out of Moscow?

Answer: Church of Mary Magdalene

Like many of the churches it too is modern. It was constructed in 1888 in honor of the Russian czar's mother. Its theme is of Mary Magdalene and a folk tale that she presented the Emperor Tiberius with an egg that turned red [for Christ's blood] when he took it into his hands.
5. In which outer part of Jerusalem would you find the Church of the Visitation?

Answer: Ein Kerem

The church marks the visit of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth who was pregnant with the future John the Baptist. The story can be read in completion in the gospel of Luke chapter 1 verses 39-80. I recommend to NIV translation.
6. Which church derives its name from the Lord's Prayer?

Answer: Church of the Paternoster

Paternoster is Latin for "Our Father" which is the beginning of the Lord's Prayer. The prayer spoken by Jesus is recorded in the sixth chapel of the gospel of Matthew, The church itself boasts a cave beneath its floors that allegedly housed meetings of the disciples and Jesus.

The mother of Constantine, Helena, issued the building of the first church on this site in the fourth century only to be destroyed by the Persians in 614 AD.
7. What church would you be visiting if you went immediately to your right after entering St. Stephen's gate?

Answer: St. Anne's

Who was St. Anne you might ask? Well the church is dedicated to the parents of Jesus' mother Mary who was Anne and her father Joachim. The church was built rather later in Church history dating to the Crusader Period in the late 1100's. St. Anne's sits next to the Sheep Pools that are mentioned in the New Testament and it is the beginning of the Via Dolorosa which Catholics walk to commemorate the trail of of the Crucifixion of Jesus.
8. What church marks the spot of Caiaphas' house?

Answer: Saint Peter in Gallicantu

RE: Matthew Chapter 26. The Apostle Peter denied knowing Jesus three times before the cock crowed just as it was prophesied. The church claims to be built on the remains of Caiaphas' home who was the High Priest at the time but there is a lot of debate about the accuracy of that claim.
9. The Church of the Flagellation is located on the Via Dolorosa.

Answer: True

Flagellation is a fancy word for whipping someone and this of course is part of the suffering that Jesus endured before being crucified.
10. In which church would you find a memorial to the story of Christ weeping over the city of Jerusalem?

Answer: Dominus Flevit

The church itself is located on the Mount of Olives but what is extremely interesting is that the architecture is shaped in the fashion of a tear drop! Of course you have to use your imagination slightly but still...
