1. The 10th Century Saxon Church on the current site was dedicated to which saint?

Answer: St. Werburgh

In 1092, the site became a Benedictine Abbey, and a new church was built in the Norman style, parts of which can still be seen today. The Shrine of St. Werburgh is located in The Lady Chapel.

Answer: 1250

It took about 250 years to build. The Benedictine Abbey was closed in 1540, due to the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII. The next year it became the Cathedral of the newly-created Diocese of Chester.

In this chapel today, all people are welcome to pray, light a candle, or leave a written prayer.

The Refectory was built from 1225 to 1250. One of the monks would have read aloud from one the wall pulpit during the meal, which would have been eaten in silence. Today vistors can dine in The Refectory Restaurant.

The North Transept was built in 1100 and was part of the original Norman church. The Cobweb Picture, a very rare example of an unusual 19th century art form, can be seen in a niche in the wall here.

A misericord is a small ledge on the backs of the seats in The Quire. These enabled the monks to rest during the long services. The woodwork dates back to 1380 and is among the finest surviving medieval woodwork in England.
