Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Le mot "jadis" est utilisé souvent dans les histoires, que veut dire "jadis"?

Answer: Once upon a time, in the old days

Autrefois, il y longtemps are other words that are fairly close. Jade is jade in French as well. Dans l'avenir another way to say the future. Actuellement is one way of saying presently or at the current time.
2. Dans la phrase "Cela va faire jaser" que voudrait-il dire "jaser"?

Answer: To gossip

Jaser is for gossip. That's going to make people gossip.
3. Ce mot designe quelquechose qui revient à la mode. Qu'est-ce qu'un porte-jarretelles ?

Answer: a garter belt (suspender belt)

Yes, this garment is coming back into style in the nineties and early 00s. I put ham and beans on there because, well, you might have heard a reference to "jarret de veau" as the jarret is the part behind your knees and is a cut of meat you find on menus. Thus, jarretelles..the garter suspends the stocking around that area on the leg. Un porte whatever is something that bears something or carries it so it's masculine.
4. "La jaunisse", qu'est-ce que c'est?

Answer: Jaundice

Jaune is yellow so as jaundice is the sign of a bilious condition that makes the skin look yellow, the English word is closely linked to the French. La jeunesse is youth. Une génisse is a heifer. La jalousie is jealousy.
5. Que veut dire " faire un jeûne"?

Answer: to fast

This is a bit tricky, as un jeûne is a fast, or managing without food for religious or health reasons. Thus, déjeuner is to break one's fast, (or breakfast in other words). Un jeune, une jeune would be a young man, a young woman but normally, you'd add garcon, homme or fille, femme. Often the youth are referred to as "des jeunes".

However, the more formal term used on news broadcasts is "les jeunes gens". Naïve is the same, but naïf is the masculine. By the way, if the doctor prescribes something to be taken "à jeun" he or she means on an empty stomach.
6. Bien que les origines avec Judas Iscariote soient assez évidentes, que veut aussi dire "un judas"?

Answer: A peephole in a door

Though the word Judas designates a traitor as you might imagine, it also is the word used for the peephole to see who's at the door before you open it.
7. Si les enfants ont des joues roses après avoir joué, ils ont quoi?

Answer: Rosy cheeks

La joue is the cheek. Le nez the nose, knees are genoux and in this instance, genoux écorchés, les yeux qui brillent is one way to say their eyes are sparkling.
8. Qu'est-ce que c'est qu'un justaucorps?

Answer: A leotard for dancing

Un justaucorps is the common word for a leotard. Un chapeau haut de forme is a top hat.
9. Une jument is a horse, but what sort of horse of course?

Answer: A mare

Un étalon is a stallion, a colt is called a "poulain" if you look at the chocolate brand name you'll see a colt on the cover.
10. Ce prénom masculin assez courant à une époque est devenu un mot d'argot en français. Que voudrait dire « jules » ?

Answer: Boyfriend, husband, her guy

This expression is used quite a lot for "c'est son jules?" meaning, "is that her boyfriend?"
However it originally was used for the man who, well, watched over a lady of the night. This is pretty strong slang however, so to be used with caution by non-native speakers to avoid misunderstandings.
Bijoux would be jewels though there are many words for the varieties. Dupe is used, but many other words are used, one of my favorites is "un pinouf".
