Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Relationship problems are often cited as one of the top reasons for suicide. Which of the following days might a relationship-challenged individual dread? Hint: It's a day memorializing the death of a saint.

Answer: February 14

Relationship problems, often coupled with mental illness and/or substance abuse, are a significant factor in suicides. I remember in my single years how Valentine's Day would summon a sense of dread and loneliness...even though it was such a commercialized holiday. Combine that feeling with mental illness and you have a recipe for disaster.
2. Valentine's Day memorializes the death of a saint. Which saint thus named, for which we celebrate his martyrdom, was allegedly beheaded for marrying young couples at a time when marriage was illegal by Roman emperor, Claudius II?

Answer: Valentinus

The legend has it that Claudius II had enacted a law outlawing young men to marry in an effort to boost the ranks of his army. Valentinus disregarded the law marrying young couples in secret. His deeds were discovered and at first Claudius II took a liking to Valentinus, attempting to dissuade him from Christianity and his deeds. Valentinus refused to turn from his Christian ways, and Claudius II had him first beaten, then beheaded.
3. The legend of Valentine's Day began to grow. Which English author contributed to the popularization of Valentine's Day within his poem "Parlement of Foules" that says: "For this was on seynt Volantynys day, Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make"? Essentially he's responsible for the first references toward Valentine's Day being for lovers.

Answer: Geoffrey Chaucer

I always knew that Geoffrey Chaucer was up to no good. Just read those "Canterbury Tales" and know there is some mischief behind those pages. Thus October 25, 1400, was a good day in history when this Valentine's Day instigator took his last breath.
4. Some aspects of Valentine's Day have their roots in pagan traditions. Those ancients took debauchery to high levels during this wolf-whistling Roman holiday, celebrated February 13-15, which included running through the streets naked (or dressed in fresh goat skins), whipping willing women in an effort to increase fertility?

Answer: Lupercalia

The festival occurs on the ides of February and is meant to purify Rome and increase fertility. It is a festival in honor of Lupa, the wolf that raised the fabled founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. As Rome eventually turned toward Christianity, the pagan festivals were done away with. Legend loosely connects the celebration of Valentine's Day as an attempt at replacing Lupercalia.
5. The penning of love notes was added to the Valentine's Day debacle. Charles of Orléans was a French Duke captured during the Battle of Agincourt by the British because he was unable to get out from under a pile of bodies wearing his armor (which weighed him down). He was held as a prisoner of war and wrote his beloved wife Valentine poems from within which stronghold?

Answer: Tower of London

Charles penned the words "Je suis desja d'amour tanné, Ma tres doulce Valentinée..." The majority of his poetry during his twenty-four years of captivity focused on his captivity and the love of his wife. As a noble, he was well treated by his captors until his release in 1440, when he returned to France.
6. After all the blood and violence from which Valentine's Day sprang, it became a two-headed monster when the commercialization of Valentine's Day started in the United States with the mass production of Valentine's Day cards. This process was credited to which individual (no she didn't popularize Easter)?

Answer: Esther Howland

Esther received an ornate Valentine's Day card from one of her father's associates in 1847. This intrigued the girl and she set to use her father's stationary store and business connections to begin producing Valentine's Day cards en mass with imported materials.

She sent her early samples out with her father's traveling salesmen, hoping for some business. To her surprise, she got far more than she anticipated and her business boomed, eventually grossing over $100,000 per year (in the mid-1800s, mind you).

She was known as the "Mother of the American Valentine."
7. With the commercialization of Valentine's Day complete, more dark days were ahead. 1929 brought with it the bloody Valentine's Day Massacre, which was the culmination of a mob war in Chicago over bootleg alcohol territories. Seven members of a rival gang were lined up and shot, execution style, upon the orders of what famous mobster?

Answer: Al Capone

At the conclusion of the bloodbath, seven gangsters lay dead or nearly dead. One of the nearly dead, Frank Gusenberg, refused to talk to the police, declaring "nobody shot me" despite the fact he had 14 bullet holes in his body. He died three hours later, continuing to refuse the police any answers til his dying breath.

Despite his involvement, Al Capone was never held responsible for his involvement. It wasn't until two years later that somebody finally got Capone's goat...no, not the FBI...but the IRS.

He was arrested and sentenced for tax evasion.
8. Sick of all this Valentine's Day nonsense, a group of Valentine's Day haters established an anti-holiday celebration that targeted the commercialization of this "Hallmark holiday" and celebrating the strength of being alone. What was their anti-holiday called?

Answer: Singles Awareness Day

Embracing the fun acronym "SAD," Singles Awareness Day is typically celebrated on either February 14 or 15. They aren't choosy just as long as there is no exchange of sappy presents or cards. As further emphasis of their commitment, most SAD observers wear either green or black, shunning anything pink or red. A popular escape for SAD participants is taking a trip to Carnival in Brazil.
9. For some poor souls, Valentine's Day is an onslaught of histamines flowing from the Valentine goods everywhere. Of all holidays, where does Valentine's rank for fresh flower purchases that tease the nose hairs of allergy sufferers?

Answer: 1st

Valentine's Day is the number one reason for purchasing fresh-cut flowers. It beats all other holidays in this one floral category. It isn't just the Valentine's Day card people getting fat on my weeping emotions, the floral and chocolate businesses also thrive.
10. As depressing as Valentine's Day and this quiz has become, I'll end on a lighter note with the 2010 movie, "Valentine's Day". Which actress who brings sexy back played Kara Monahan, a publicist who spends the majority of the movie preparing for her "I Hate Valentine's Day" party?

Answer: Jessica Biel

Kara Monahan invites everybody she encounters throughout the movie to her party, but nobody shows up leaving her alone and dejected in the midst of her party trappings. She does get a little romance in the end (can't have a movie called "Valentine's Day" without that) as she meets a new love interest, Jamie Foxx's character, Kelvin. Kelvin is a newscaster interviewing her about her anti-Valentine's stand at the direction of his boss (also a Valentine's Day hater). Sparks fly and everybody lives happily ever after.
