The water lizards that fell on Sacramento, California in August 1870, were two to eight inches in length. They covered the roof of the opera house and were scurrying over the pavement in the nearby vicinity. Several hundred survived for several days in a partially dug earthern basement. This article appeared in the "Sacramento Reporter" on Aug. 6, 1870.

In Kirensk, over 250 miles away, a pillar of fire was observed followed by three or four claps and then a huge crashing sound.

In the area south of Kansk, some 400 miles away, horses were actually knocked off their feet. The actual impact point was proposed by one theory to have been two miles above the ground. Theories for a cause have ranged from a meteorite, a black hole, or even a nuclear explosion from a crippled alien space ship.

The night skies glowed so bright that people could actually read newspapers at midnight in parts of northern Europe and England. It was first listed in the "Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society" July, 1908.
