Season two's theme song was being sung by Aretha Franklin. Aretha was once married to new castmate Glynn Turman, who played Colonel Taylor.

Meanwhile, Whitley came to town to be an attendant at her father's wedding to Monica. She left the reception abruptly, and arrived early to the Huxtable home. She tossed her bridesmaid gown into the trash bin and proceeded to eat her feelings away. The pair headed back to Hillman, but became stranded in the snow storm. It was unclear why they had to sit in a cold car while waiting for someone to come change the tire, but they had a chance to snuggle and share a few kisses of consolation.

After Whitley agreed to a quick dance with Dwayne, he became a little too touchy with her. That evening, she had an adventurous dream about "canoing". That was the euphemism for sex, something Whitley admitted she'd never done. In the meantime, Freddie was getting worried about the two of them, so she baked brownies and sent some of her own poetry to Dwayne. He, at first, believed Whitley to be the gifter. Kim was the one who straightened him out, and at the end of the episode he went to Freddie to talk to her. Lettie had helped Whitley sort out her dream, and she felt a lot better about it.

Over the course of "The Cosby Show" and the first season of "A Different World", Denise proved herself repeatedly to be both irresponsible and lazy. She was a typical middle child, by many psychologists standards. In this case, Jaleesa had paid for something for Denise the week prior and Denise was covering that favor by writing a check for their current semester dorm fees. She wrote a check for each of their fees, for a total of $200, and the checks both bounced. The effusive Maggie Lauten, played by future Oscar Winner Marisa Tomei, tried to help the tension ease. She was more of a pain than a help, and in the end Denise took a job to make up the money. We would not meet Jaleesa's ex-husband for quite a while yet..

Dwayne and Denise lost track of time while he tutored her in Gilbert Hall. So, to save their prospective behinds, they decided Dwayne could exit the dorm via fire escape. The only problem was that Whitley's room had access to it! When he hit the ground, Stevie spotted him outside her first floor window. Denise confessed the truth during a meeting with Walter, Stevie, Jaleesa, Whitley, and Dwayne. Whitley was not gracious and demanded an apology in the school paper! This was the first appearance of Sinbad, who played Walter Oakes in 45 episodes. Sinbad was born David Adkins. Charnele Brown, who played Kim Reese, did not appear until after the exit of Lisa Bonet.

Whitley believed the poem to be about her, but was corrected by Kobie and Dwayne. The professor, played by actor Eric La Salle, told the class that all great poetry allows the reader to see what they need to in it. Dwayne said that despite that, his poem was still about math. Kobie was played by actor Abner Mariri.

Stevie took Professor Byron Walcott aside to enlighten him to his affect on the young women in his classroom. He did not take her news well, and the pair argued quietly before parting company. Dwayne was in the library with them at the time, and witnessed their conversation. Sadly, he did not actually HEAR it. He reported it to Whitley, more to gloat than inform, and she turned his account into a fantastic story about the pair. She was not trying to be mean, she was just losing herself in the riptide of story telling. It would not be her last entertaining tale. After Denise and the professor worked out her feelings and his intentions, he came over to see Stevie. I guess that argument was spicy enough to grab his attention!

She was going to videotape and offer career advice, but she ended up offering a lot of personal advice as well. The students who knew her through Denise liked and trusted her. Freddie was not interested in the future, but in the past. She had discovered that Gilbert Hall was built on the same ground as the original Gilbert family home had been. She noticed too that the basement area had some noticeable differences to the original plan of the Gilbert home. So, in the interest of her Archeology class she began removing the basement wall. Once inside the room behind the wall, Freddie and Walter discovered it was indeed a piece of the Underground Railroad.

Dwayne bought her a very nice ring, which even received approval from Whitley. He told Whitley that he and Suzanne had been going out for four months. When Suzanne saw the ring she was less excited than one would expect. She later told Dwayne they were moving too fast, the ring was too much and she needed some space. He later asked her to attend a platonic viewing of "The Battleship Potemkin", but she declined, so he attended with his pal Whitley instead. This was in episode 14 "Breaking Up is Hard to Do".
