Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the season opener, "Strangers on a Plane", which of these choices was NOT true?

Answer: Freddie revealed that she'd married over the summer

Whitley was happily surprised to find a well suited Dwayne riding on her plane back to Virginia. He was coming back from Canada dressed very well, in a suit, and that made a significant impression on Whitley. They were both in first class, but Whitley lied to her seat companion to get Dwayne the seat next to her own. Sadly, Whitley was later disappointed to see Dwayne, dressed in street clothes, dancing happily in his newly painted apartment.

In the previous episode, the apartment was the color of old peeling wood. Ron had made some minor improvements since he last saw Dwayne. Kim and Freddie were shocked at the dorm to find Quincy Lee Tollison unpacking in the room Kim shared with Whitley. Yep, the dorm had gone co-ed and the men were sequestered to the third floor! Jaleesa and Walter were resident adviser and dorm director respectively, and Kim had cut her hair short after a "fire" in the lab. Freddie had just expressed her despair over having an ordinary summer without any real experiences to share.
2. In the fifth episode, "Forever Hold Your Peace", Dwayne and Whitley traveled to New York together. When Dwayne first met Denise's husband Martin Kendall, who did he think Martin actually was?

Answer: Theo Huxtable

Martin and Olivia came into the Huxtable home while Denise was in the kitchen making lasagna. Dwayne was really friendly with Martin, but became confused and assumed he was talking to Theo. When he learned that he was not Theo, Dwayne assumed Martin had to be Elvin, Sondra's husband.

He was shocked and crushed to learn Denise had married Martin while in Africa. Meanwhile, Whitley came to town to be an attendant at her father's wedding to Monica. She left the reception abruptly, and arrived early to the Huxtable home.

She tossed her bridesmaid gown into the trash bin and proceeded to eat her feelings away. The pair headed back to Hillman, but became stranded in the snow storm. It was unclear why they had to sit in a cold car while waiting for someone to come change the tire, but they had a chance to snuggle and share a few kisses of consolation.
3. Did Jaleesa and Walter get married in episode 7, "Wedding Bells From Hell"?

Answer: No

Walter proposed to Jaleesa so they could take advantage of a free honeymoon give away. She said "yes" rather impetuously, but later voiced her concerns. Walter was also having some concerns, but kept them from her until they were in the midst of their ceremony! When the minister asked for any objects, the pair objected simultaneously. They both came to their senses. And, though they did end their relationship at the end of the episode, a continuity mistake had them as a couple in a few episodes to follow.

This episode showed Dwayne pursue Whitley with fervor for the first time. At the very end, she finally admitted she was not ready for anything serious with him. He told her to call him when she was ready.
4. Dwayne wrote a love poem to mathematics in "The Power of the Pen". Which famous writer came to him in a dream to inspire Dwayne to write?

Answer: William Shakespeare

Dwayne was frustrated and full of writer's block, despite having written Denise a love poem in season one. He did not understand poetry, or why the class was required for him to graduate. So, he fell asleep in the library and was "visited" by William Shakespeare.

He awoke inspired to write about his first love- math. Whitley believed the poem to be about her, but was corrected by Kobie and Dwayne. The professor, played by actor Eric La Salle, told the class that all great poetry allows the reader to see what they need to in it. Dwayne said that despite that, his poem was still about math. Kobie was played by actor Abner Mariri.
5. Which Hillman student discovered a link to the Underground Railroad in episode 15, "Success, Lies and Videotape"?

Answer: Freddie

In this episode, Clair Huxtable returned to interview students about their plans for the future. She was going to videotape and offer career advice, but she ended up offering a lot of personal advice as well. The students who knew her through Denise liked and trusted her. Freddie was not interested in the future, but in the past.

She had discovered that Gilbert Hall was built on the same ground as the original Gilbert family home had been. She noticed too that the basement area had some noticeable differences to the original plan of the Gilbert home. So, in the interest of her Archeology class she began removing the basement wall. Once inside the room behind the wall, Freddie and Walter discovered it was indeed a piece of the Underground Railroad.
6. In order to get their budding friendship back on track, Whitley decided to set Dwayne up on a blind date with her friend Megan Lewis. Is it true that after doing so, Whitley became visibly jealous of Dwayne and Megan?

Answer: Yes

At first, Dwayne wanted no part of being set up by Whitley. But, all the men he consulted, Mr. Gaines, Ron, Walter and Colonel Taylor, told him to go on the date. Somehow, Julian and Whitley ended up at the same location as Dwayne and Megan, and Whitley's claws came out.

At the end of the episode, "That's The Trouble With You All", the pals shared a kiss to end the chapter on their involvement. Whitley expected a real kiss, but Dwayne elected to kiss her cheek. Whitley's boyfriend, Julian Day, was a handsome, well-educated, well built man that Dwayne referred to as Georgetown. On more than one occasion Dwayne was to comment how he wore Whitley like a piece of jewelry or a cheap suit. Torri Whitehead played Megan Lewis.
7. In part one of "The Getaway" the Hillman gang heads to South Carolina for Spring Break. Which of these people did not go with them?

Answer: Jaleesa

They headed out to Devil's Island for Spring Break. Whitley and Julian had plans to go a private family residence on Hilton Head, but Julian had to cancel their plans at the very last minute. So, Whitley decided to tag along with Kim, Freddie, Ernest, Ron and Dwayne to Devil's Island. Once they arrived, Ron and Dwayne discovered a duffle bag containing drugs and cash. Dwayne insisted that it be handed over to the police, but the men had a hard time getting back to the main land. Soon after the discovery, two very large men arrived on scene in search of the stash.
8. In "The Getaway Pt. 2", after arriving at the beach house, did Julian propose marriage to Whitley?

Answer: No

Julian did not ask Whitley to marry him, and he never would. He did arrive unexpectedly, after interviewing and acquiring a job with Pan Africa. Whitley did decide to experience her 'first time' with Julian on this vacation, but he turned her down. He explained that her first time should be very special and private. The entire gang helped apprehend the drug dealers, and Walter arrived with the police just in the nick of time. Ernest had been sick and passed out in the downstairs bathroom through all of the drama!

Pan Africa was most likely a take off of Pan American, which is a division of the World Health Organization.
9. In the final episode of season three, Julian posed this idea to Whitley, which was not the one she was hoping for.

Answer: He asked her to live with him for the summer

When Julian told Whitley that he had a very important question for her, she assumed it was going to be a marriage proposal. Instead, what he did was ask that she come live with him for the summer in Washington DC while he worked for the fictional Pan Africa.

It was not that Whitley was totally disappointed, or against that idea, but just not the question she was expecting to hear. She may have even considered it a moment longer if Julian had not begun to negate her commitment to intern for EH Wright over the summer.

He basically brushed off her plans as inconsequential to his own. That was enough for her, and the relationship died with that conversation.
10. In the finale, "Perhaps Love", Dwayne's mother came to Hillman to celebrate his Phi Beta Kappa accomplishment. Which singer and actress portrayed Adele Wayne?

Answer: Patti LaBelle

Aretha Franklin did sing the theme song for the series, but it was the fabulous Patti LaBelle that played Adele Wayne. She took an instant disliking to Whitley, with some good reason, but loved Kim Reese from the start. It could have been because she and Kim favored in looks considerably and because Kim was becoming a doctor. When she met Mr. Gaines, he asked her if anyone had ever told her that she looked like "that singer, Patti Lulabelle".

Phi Beta Kappa is given to students who have demonstrated academic excellence. That did apply to Dwayne Wayne, so it made sense to write that in for him.
