0-10: '3' Trivia Questions

1. 'The Story of the Three Bears', which is also known as 'Goldilocks', was written by which author?

From Quiz
Count Three

Answer: Robert Southey

'The Story of the Three Bears' was written by an English poet called Robert Southey. It was first published in his collection of prose called 'The Doctor'. He was part of the group of poets called the Romantics. His other works include 'The Fall of Robespierre' and 'Thalaba the Destroyer'.

2. Many of you may have heard of the 1960s folk trio of Peter, Paul and Mary, but what was Mary's surname?

From Quiz 3's The Charm

Answer: Travers

Mary Travers (1936-2009) was one third of the famous threesome, along with Peter Yarrow and Noel (Paul) Stookey. Those of you who are too young to remember may still be singing their many well-known songs like "If I Had a Hammer" from 1962, "Puff the Magic Dragon" and "Blowin' in the Wind" from 1963, and "Leaving on a Jet Plane" from 1967. The group was formed in 1961, and enjoyed immediate success; they shared both a manager (Albert Grossman) with the renowned Bob Dylan and one of his songs "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right". The group broke up in 1970, but was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999.

3. Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos figured heavily in Greek mythology. By what collective name were these three women known?

From Quiz Threesomes

Answer: Fates

The Fates, or Moirae, controlled the thread of life from birth to death. Clotho spun the thread, Lachesis measured it thus deciding how long you would live, and Atropos decided upon your manner of death and cut the thread to end your life.

4. Which Shakespeare play begins: "When shall we three meet again in thunder, lightning or in rain?"

From Quiz ...And Then Three Come Along At Once

Answer: Macbeth

These words are uttered by the first of the three witches who are characters in the play "Macbeth". They meet Macbeth later on in the first act and predict that he will become king. The play follows Macbeth and his wife as they go on a downward spiral of murder and guilt ending eventually in Lady Macbeth's suicide and Macbeth's death at the hands of Macduff. The question is: would any of this have happened if Macbeth hadn't met the three witches?

5. The 'three legged mare' is a colloquial reference to which gruesome but extremely popular structure in London in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries?

From Quiz Fancy a Threesome?

Answer: Tyburn

It is a slang term and reference to the gallows at Tyburn which was a place and method of execution. The structure was triangular in shape. Executions were attended by huge crowds and supported by sellers of drinks, foods and refreshments.

6. How old is Huck Finn in Mark Twain's novel of the same name?

From Quiz By The Numbers 3

Answer: 13

7. Stanley is one groovy llama and likes to listen to musical trios. Which trio consisted of men named Barry, Robin and Maurice?

From Quiz Three Llamas Go Looking for Things in Threes

Answer: Bee Gees

The Bee Gees were also known as the Brothers Gibb, although their "Bee Gee" name allegedly was derived from the initials of lead singer Barry Gibb, a DJ named Bill Gates and a promoter named Bill Goode. Oldest brother Barry and twins Robin and Maurice first hit the charts in the 1960s with songs such as "To Love Somebody", "Massachusetts" and "Holiday", but it was their music during the 1970s disco era that made them superstars. They contributed most of the music to the 1977 soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever", a multi-platinum album that dominated the album and singles charts in many countries. Their single "Stayin' Alive" from that album has since earned the distinction of being recommended by the British Heart Foundation and American Heart Association for CPR training since the beats per minute are in the range of chest compressions recommended per minute when performing CPR. PDAZ admits to being a Bee Gees fan like Stanley.

8. What were the gifts that the Three Wise Men brought Jesus?

From Quiz Count Three

Answer: Gold, frankincense and myrrh

The Wise Men, according to the Bible, visited Jesus and brought him gifts in the form of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They followed a star that led them to the place of Jesus's birth. They are part of the traditional nativity celebrations that take place during Christmas, alongside other important figures like Mary and Joseph. They are spoken about in the gospel of Matthew from the New Testament in the Bible.

9. What is one reason it is assumed that there were three magi who came to visit the infant Jesus?

From Quiz ...And Then Three Come Along At Once

Answer: They brought three gifts

The Bible (in Matthew 2) simply states that "magi from the east" came looking for "the one who has been born king of the Jews" (NIV). It doesn't tell us how many of them there were or what they were called. Later in the chapter the magi presented their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the young Jesus. The word "magi" is from a Persian word meaning one who is an expert in the study of the stars. Since the 8th century the magi have traditionally, in western Christianity, been assigned the names Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar.

10. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego got on the wrong side of the king, and got thrown into a furnace for their trouble. Where can you read their story?

From Quiz Good Things Come in Threes

Answer: The Bible.

King Nebuchadnezzar ordered the upstart Hebrews tossed into the furnace for refusing to bow down and worship a statue of him. When he peeked in to watch the barbeque, he saw four men walking around, unscathed, in the flames. Shadrach, Meshac, and Abednego won their lives and freedom, not to mention a zealous convert to their religion. The Bible doesn't give a positive ID of the fourth man, who does not emerge from the furnace to be questioned, but the Chrisians take him to be Jesus, putting in an early appearance among the faithful.

11. How many episodes did the original TV show 'Mission Impossible' have (1966-1973)?

Answer: 171

12. Kaspar, Melchior and Balthasar are better known as the three what?

From Quiz Threes

Answer: Magi & Wise men & Kings & Wisemen

13. Which three-wheeled vehicle is a common mode of public transportation in India?

From Quiz Count Three

Answer: Auto rickshaw

The auto rickshaw is one of the most common modes of public transportation in India, aside from buses and trains. It is a three-wheeled vehicle with most commonly four stroke engines. It is used for travelling short distances. In India, auto rickshaw fares are controlled by the government. They have almost replaced hand-pulled rickshaws in the country. Auto rickshaws are also common in other countries like Indonesia, Bangladesh, China and some African nations.

14. What is the surname of Alex, Mallory and Jennifer, the fictional children from the sitcom "Family Ties"?

From Quiz 3's The Charm

Answer: Keaton

Yes, Alex, Mallory and Jennifer were the three original children of Steven and Elyse Keaton. I know there was a fourth sibling named Andy, but he was added to the show later (probably to boost ratings?), so I don't count him. The show ran from 1982 to 1989 and first introduced us to Michael J. Fox as the staunch Republican conservative Alex P. Keaton, whose parents just happened to be 1960s "leftwing political activists" (i.e., the father ran a PBS station and the mother was an architect). You may recognize the incorrect surnames from other sitcoms: Drummond from "Diff'rent Strokes", Seaver from "Growing Pains" and Tanner was the family who took in "ALF".

15. For which chemical reaction are oxygen, heat, and fuel the three necessary ingredients?

From Quiz Threesomes

Answer: Combustion

Yep, good old fire, or combustion, is actually a series of chemical reactions that cannot occur unless the three key ingredients are present. Fortunately for us, nuclear fusion is not quite so simple to orchestrate. A sliced apple that turns brown or a rusty pipe is the result of oxidation. Effervescence is the result of gas escaping from a watery solution.

16. Which three visually impaired animals had an appendage brutally removed by the spouse of an agriculturalist?

From Quiz ...And Then Three Come Along At Once

Answer: Mice

"Three blind mice, see how they run! They all ran after the farmer's wife who cut off their tails with a carving knife. Did ever you see such a thing in your life as three blind mice?" According to wikipedia a variation of this rhyme was first published in a book entitled "Deuteromelia or The Seconde part of Musicks melodie" in 1609. Whether it has any roots in historical events is uncertain. The rhyme entered children's literature in 1842 when it was published in a collection by James Orchard Haliwell. The animals in the wrong answers also feature in nursery rhymes and fairy tales. Three little kittens lost their mittens, there were three Billy Goats Gruff and Goldilocks met three bears.

17. Which ancient Greek philosopher described three as the perfect number, expressive of "beginning, middle and end" and therefore in his work he made it the symbol of deity?

From Quiz Fancy a Threesome?

Answer: Pythagoras

Pythagoras of Samos (569 BC - 475 BC) was a Greek philosopher who made important developments in mathematics, astronomy, and the theory of music

20. Major League Baseball- what is the distance in feet between the bases?

From Quiz By The Numbers 3

Answer: 90 feet

21. If there are three feet in a standard yard, how many inches are there in a yard?

From Quiz Count Three

Answer: 36 inches

There are 36 inches in a yard. Therefore, 3 feet equals 36 inches. There are 12 inches in a foot. One yard is equal to 0.9144 meters. The yard is a unit of measurement which is widely used to measure the length of textile clothing, swimming pools, cricket pitches, etc.

22. Which explorer comes to mind if I tell you his ships were the "Nina", the "Pinta", and the "Santa Maria"?

From Quiz Threesomes

Answer: Cristoforo Colombo

The king and queen of Spain furnished Colombo (Columbus) with his ships in 1492 and the rest, as they say, is history. Did you know that the "Nina" and the "Pinta" are nicknames? The actual name of the "Nina" was the "Santa Clara". The "Pinta" means "painted one"; the actual name of the ship has been lost through the ages.

23. Who or what is a triptych?

From Quiz ...And Then Three Come Along At Once

Answer: A piece of artwork made up of three interconnected panels

The word triptych has its origins in the Greek word triptukhos meaning three fold (dictionary.com). It seems (after looking for examples on the internet) that triptych art may either be three panels which are hinged together or three pictures appearing in the same frame.

24. In lacrosse, teams play on the field with one goal keeper, three midfielders, three attackers, and how many defenders?

From Quiz By The Numbers 3

Answer: 3

25. Can you name any one of the three great masters of Greek tragedy?

From Quiz Threes

Answer: Aeschylus & Sophocles & Euripides

26. On to movie-land: who directed the 1966 Western movie "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"?

From Quiz 3's The Charm

Answer: Sergio Leone

Sergio Leone (1929-1989) was an Italian writer, producer, and director who gave us the "Spaghetti Western": "A Fistful of Dollars" in 1964 and "For a Few Dollars More" in 1965, which formed the trilogy (there it is again!), along with "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" (also known as "Il buono, Il brutto, Il cattivo"). These characters were played by Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef respectively. The plot of the movie centered around two men joining up against a third in the race to find "a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery", not to mention the unforgettable theme song. The incorrect choices were also directors in the 1960s.

27. What was the make and model of the three-wheeler car made famous by "Del Boy" Trotter in the TV show "Only Fools and Horses"?

From Quiz ...And Then Three Come Along At Once

Answer: Reliant Regal

The Reliant Regal was first produced in 1952. The Reliant company went through some turbulent financial times over the years but continued to manufacture the Regal in various editions until 1986. The company also made the Rialto and the Robin, the latter probably being the most famous British three-wheeler. (Thanks to www.3wheelers.com for this and a lot of other fascinating information.) As mentioned in the question the most famous Regal driver must be "Del Boy" Trotter. He ran his "business" from his flat in Peckham with his younger brother Rodney. His mustard coloured Regal could be seen on the streets proudly announcing the name of "Trotter's Independent Trading". Many people (myself included) thought that Del actually drove a Reliant Robin but it was in fact a Regal van. For an additional interesting fact player C30, who was a keen Reliant owner for many years, sent me the following: The Rialto Mk.1 and Mk.2 were easy to identify by the square shaped headlights, the Robin had round headlights (or in the case of later models, "teardrop" headlights).

28. The Three Choirs Festival is a famous musical festival for the performance of sacred music performed since 1724 by the combined cathedral choirs of which three cathedral cities of England. Do you know which?

From Quiz Fancy a Threesome?

Answer: Gloucester, Worcester and Hereford

The event is held annually using the combined choirs of the cathedrals of Gloucester, Worcester, and Hereford. It is held in each of the three cities in rotation.

29. No quiz on trios would be complete without mentioning Groucho, Harpo, and Chico. But early in their film career, there were actually four Marx Brothers. What is the name of the Marx Brother that decided Hollywood wasn't for him, after appearing in five movies?

From Quiz Good Things Come in Threes

Answer: Zeppo

Herbert "Zeppo" Marx was the youngest, and played the straight man. He was the only one without a gimmick, like Groucho's eyebrows and mustache, Harpo's wig and mutism, or Chico's ill-fitting clothes and bad Italian accent. But playing a handsome straight man didn't suit the naturally comical Zeppo, so he decided to move on. Another brother, Gummo, was part of the original musical act but didn't perform in films.

30. Euryale, Medusa and Stheno are collectively known as the three what?
