Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teddy, the youngest llama, often gets into trouble yet always manages to escape. One day the elder brothers, Ralph and Stanley, decide to teach him a lesson and pack him inside a box of ingredients for an old recipe which needs things like the "eye of newt and toe of frog, wool of bat and tongue of dog" and as they had hoped, three strange women start to stir the pot with Teddy in it. Which weird threesome had a cauldron for cooking such weird ingredients?

Answer: The Three Witches in 'Macbeth'

The Three Witches from Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' seem to have been a really charming trio; their mixture included various animal parts ranging from the eyes of newts to human lips and the jaws of a hungry shark. They did add some bits of yew and the root of hemlock but as both of these are deadly poisons, it was probably not done to add a healthy vegetable option to the mix.

Shakespeare's audience would have taken the concept of a witches' incantation more seriously than we do; the list of ingredients may seem bizarre to us but mediaeval medicine had some very strange ingredients and the people of Elizabethan England would have recognised a lot of them. At one point, for example, "witches' mummy" was added to the mix; we may be startled at the idea of crumbling a real life (well, real dead) Egyptian mummy into a potion but in mediaeval times this practice was quite well-known.

Ralph and Stanley decide they don't like the idea of this potion after all and, after fishing Teddy from the pot, they race off calling for their mummy; Flopsymopsy hopes they don't trip over a blind newt on the way home.
2. Stanley is one groovy llama and likes to listen to musical trios. Which trio consisted of men named Barry, Robin and Maurice?

Answer: Bee Gees

The Bee Gees were also known as the Brothers Gibb, although their "Bee Gee" name allegedly was derived from the initials of lead singer Barry Gibb, a DJ named Bill Gates and a promoter named Bill Goode. Oldest brother Barry and twins Robin and Maurice first hit the charts in the 1960s with songs such as "To Love Somebody", "Massachusetts" and "Holiday", but it was their music during the 1970s disco era that made them superstars. They contributed most of the music to the 1977 soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever", a multi-platinum album that dominated the album and singles charts in many countries. Their single "Stayin' Alive" from that album has since earned the distinction of being recommended by the British Heart Foundation and American Heart Association for CPR training since the beats per minute are in the range of chest compressions recommended per minute when performing CPR.

PDAZ admits to being a Bee Gees fan like Stanley.
3. Ralph was pleased that Teddy had grown up enough to join his older brothers on their adventures. Most people remember the names of three Marx brothers - Groucho, Harpo, and Chico, but not many remember that they actually had two other brothers who were part of the family act in the early days. Which of these was a sibling of the more famous trio who left the act before they made any movies?

Answer: Gummo

Gummo and Zeppo, the two youngest of the five brothers, were part of the vaudeville act that their mother organised, but they did not develop personas as colorful as those of the three oldest brothers. Gummo (Milton) left the act when he was drafted for World War I, before they made any movies, and pursued a career in the military until 1962. After his retirement from service he ran a talent agency, representing both Zeppo and Groucho along with other clients, until his death in 1977. Zeppo (Herbert) appeared in the first five Marx Brothers movies, but in relatively small and "straight" roles.

Looney_tunes is glad the three llamas are together and looks forward to following their adventures.
4. All for one and one for all! Ralph, Stanley, and Teddy, our band of llamas, shout in unison, raising their feet to the sky, as they recall the adventures of Athos, Porthos and Aramis (and d'Artagnan too) in "The Three Musketeers". Which French author is responsible for this classic work of literature?

Answer: Alexandre Dumas

One of the most popular examples of both nineteenth century and French literature, Dumas' "The Three Musketeers" primarily follows a young man named d'Artagnan who seeks to join King Louis XIII's Musketeers of the Guard, but ends up on a quest to save Queen Anne of France (from being discovered to be having relations with the English Duke of Buckingham) and then the Duke of Buckingham himself (after a plot to assassinate him is concocted by the sinister Cardinal Richelieu, though things don't quite pan out well for the Duke).

eburge is very much the d'Artagnan to the llama trio's Athos, Porthos and Aramis, though he's probably ultimately less successful than his literary counterpart.
5. Though Ralph is older than his two brothers, they always got along as though they were triplets. So, in search of three siblings to ask what it was like, Ralph and his brothers met the Saunders triplets. The three llamas were delighted to learn that the triplets played the role of a famous character as a baby. Who?

Answer: Harry Potter

Though Daniel Radcliffe is known for his role as Harry Potter in the very successful film franchise bearing that name, he, of course, would have a difficult time playing an infant on screen. For the first film in the series, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (2001), when it was necessary to show a much younger Harry, the Saunders triplets were brought in to play the part.

Though salami_swami had not seen the film himself, he was just as thrilled as Ralph and his brothers to meet the triplets that played such an iconic character, even if only for a moment.
6. The three llama brothers, Ralph, Stanley, and Teddy, decide to spend the night away from home and find a nice stall to rent. However, it turns out their hosts aren't as hospitable as it first appeared when Ralph, Stanley, and Teddy are presented with the challenge of Thimblerig. What are they facing?

Answer: An infamous con using three cups and a ball

Thimblerig (aka the shell game) is popular the world round as it involves very little equipment and the unsuspecting victim can be duped out of large sums of money in a short space of time. Three cups (or shells or similar receptacles) are placed face down before the punter and a ball (or pea) is placed under one of them. After the cups are shuffled at speed the punter has to identify which of the cups is the one with the ball inside. It sounds like a game of skill but the reality is that the operator has many ways in which to cheat.

The name derives from a time when thimbles were most commonly used but the practice is attested to as far back as the Greeks and Romans.

Ralph, Stanley, and Teddy wisely walked away before they lost their wool; Glendathecat thinks that anyone invited to play should do the same.
7. After some time the three llamas, Ralph, Stanley, and Teddy, begin to twitch with boredom. Ralph is feeling peckish and suggests they go trim the verge, Stanley thinks they should go commingle with the dams, and Teddy hints that a game of tag in the meadow would be good. With a decision to be made, they each raise a foot and play rock, paper, scissors. By what other name is this known?

Answer: RoShamBo

The game of rock, paper, scissors (or RoShamBo) can be traced back to the Han Dynasty (2nd century AD), with a game called shoushiling, which translates as "hand command". As a popular game, it did not spread to North America until the early 20th century. The origin of the name RoShamBo is unclear.

After a few attempts, the three llamas give up on RoShamBo, when each of them continually come up with scissors. Instead, they decide to do all three activities, beginning with working up an appetite, playing tag, then going to visit the dams and invite them out to dinner.

reedy couldn't help but laugh at their attempt at RoShamBo, given the shape of their feet.
8. Ralph, Stanley, and Teddy, three llama brothers, have heard the phrase that "two heads are better than one", but wonder if putting their THREE heads together would be even better. Looking to the past for evidence, they came across which beast of myth, the most terrifying three-headed dog in Tartarus?

Answer: Cerberus

Cerberus was a three-headed dog who appeared in both Greek and Roman mythologies as the guard to the gate into Tartarus. He was to let souls enter into hell but never leave, and was charged with devouring the living who dared to try to enter before their time. As part of his twelfth and final labor, Hercules (Greek: Herakles) was charged with retrieving Cerberus from the underworld. Pluto gave Hercules permission to take Cerberus if he could conquer the three-headed beast with the use of only his hands. Hercules was successful, and once his labor was complete, Cerberus was returned to the underworld to take up his post as guard once more.

In early myth, Cerberus was said to have 50 heads, but is much more commonly known as having only three. He is also commonly considered to be the Greek counterpart to the Egyptian dog-headed god of the afterlife, Anubis. The Chimera was a mythical beast that was part lion, part goat, and part serpent whilst Bastet was an Egyptian goddess with the form of a cat. And, as any Harry Potter fan can tell you, Fluffy is the three-headed pet dog of Hagrid who guards the entrance to the trap door leading to the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone (J. K. Rowling sure does love her Greek myths!).

Kaddarsgirl tells the young llamas that it's very unlikely they'll ever be attacked by a demigod, or a teenage wizard, so they really shouldn't worry about putting their three heads together to get more done!
9. Ralph, Stanley, and Teddy, our trio of llamas, decide to grab dinner at a fancy restaurant where, coincidentally, their meal is one containing three courses. The acceptance of llamas in an upscale restaurant aside, which of these is not typically a course found in a three-course meal?

Answer: Wine

While wine is likely to be served during any part of a three... or four... or nine course meal, it's not typically a course within itself. Instead, in a three-course meal you would begin with an appetizer or a starter course (consisting of a small, introductory portion to the meal like a soup or a salad), continue into the main course or your entrees, and end with a dessert.

A four-course meal can split the entree from the main course entirely though, to be fair, llamas can pack it in and would probably go for that sort of thing. Kyleisalive does not recommend offering a wine list to a llama.
10. Ralph, Stanley, and Teddy, three playful llama brothers, end their day out lounging peacefully on the river bank. "Ooh look!" cried Teddy, "hens! Just like the (he warbles tunefully) 'threeee Freeenccchhh hennnsss' in my favourite carol." Which of the four female creatures they see should NEVER be referred to as a hen?

Answer: Swan

A female swan is known as a pen, and the male is a cob. Crabs, lobsters, and mallards can all be referred to as hens, along with various other female creatures, including the Komodo Dragon! Ralph and Stanley (and Rowena8482) are doubtful of the wisdom of approaching a lady Komodo and addressing her as "hen" and decide that discretion is definitely the better part of valour so they grab Teddy before he gets pecked!

All together now "Fiiiiivvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Goooooooooold Riiiiiiiings..." :-D
