Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alvin, Simon, Theodore

Answer: At Dave's house

These three are the singing chipmunks, who reside with their human friend, and adoptive father, Dave Seville. The animated creatures are the brainchildren of Dave's alter ego, Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. They were originally created to feature in a novelty song in 1958 and have gone on to fame on TV and in the movies.
2. Aramis, Athos, Porthos

Answer: In France

These three Frenchmen are the title trio of "The Three Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas, who are joined in their adventures by another young gentleman named D'Artagnan. Movie versions of the story have been numerous, ranging from 1903 to 2011 (at least) and have included both French and English versions.
3. Balthasar, Gaspar, Melchior

Answer: Following a star

The names are sometimes spelled differently (Balthazar, Caspar/Casper, Melichior e.g.), but these three are regarded to be the three wise men who followed the star to Bethlehem to see the baby Jesus.
4. Bert, Jack, Ray

Answer: On the yellow brick road - in costume

Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Ray Bolger travelled along the yellow brick road to the Emerald City in Oz, along with Judy Garland as Dorothy and the little dog Toto, in the 1939 movie "The Wizard of Oz". Their costumes were Cowardly Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow respectively.
5. Bing, Bob, Dorothy

Answer: On the road to some exotic place

Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour starred in a series of seven "Road" movies, playing different characters in each one, but maintaining a number of running jokes throughout. Starting with "Road to Singapore" in 1940, the comedies went to Zanzibar, Morocco, Utopia, Rio and Bali, before ending in "The Road to Hong Kong" in 1962.
6. Chance, Sassy, Shadow

Answer: On an incredible journey

These three are the two dogs and a cat who starred in the 1993 movie "Homeward Bound: An Incredible Journey" and "Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco" (1996). Michael J. Fox voiced young dog Chance in both movies, and Sally Field was Sassy the cat. Older dog Shadow had Don Ameche's voice in the first film, and Ralph Waite's in the second.
7. Chico, Groucho, Harpo

Answer: At the circus

The Marx Brothers could be found at places other than the circus, but "At the Circus" (1939) was one of the movies that just these three (without brother Zeppo) appeared in. I didn't want to be so cruel as to ask you to identify them by their birth names: Adolph (Harpo), Julius (Groucho) and Leonard (Chico).
8. Curly, Larry, Moe

Answer: Making comedy shorts

Moe and Curly Howard along with Larry Fine were The Three Stooges in at least 100 short comedy films between 1932 and 1946, as well as close to a dozen feature length movies. Moe and Larry were the core of the group throughout its existence (1928-1970), while Curly (Jerome), who died in 1955, gave way at different periods to Shemp Howard, Joe Besser and Joe DeRita (known as Curly Joe).
9. Esmerelda, Gytha, Magrat

Answer: On the Discworld

Esmerelda and Gytha are better known as Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg, while Magrat Garlick goes by her first name. These three witches are the most famous of Terry Pratchett's Discworld witches, appearing in several novels including "Lords and Ladies", "Witches Abroad" and "Wyrd Sisters". They are sometimes joined by the young witch, Agnes Nitt, who likes to be called Perdita.
10. Frank, Joe, Johnny

Answer: On the baseball diamond

OK, this time I was a bit cruel, as these are the first names of the Chicago Cubs double play combination Tinker, Evers and Chance. Frank Chance was player-manager of the 1908 Cubs, leading them to their last World Series victory for 108 years. Joe Tinker was the shortstop, Johnny Evers was at second base, and Chance played first base.
11. Harry, Hermione, Ron

Answer: At Hogwarts

Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley have many adventures together in J.K. Rowling's series of "Harry Potter" novels and the movies based on them. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is the setting for many of their escapades, and battles against Voldemort, under the tutelage of Professor Dumbledore.
12. Johannes, Johann Sebastian, Ludwig

Answer: Composing a musical masterpiece

Johannes Brahms, Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven are known as "the three Bs" of classical music. All three have impressive lists of works, including symphonies, sonatas, quartets, quintets and (of course) at least one lullaby.
13. Jose, Luciano, Placido

Answer: Singing operatically

Opera singers Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti performed together as The Three Tenors between 1990 and 2003 in venues ranging from the Opera de Monte-Carlo to Dodger Stadium. They produced a number of concert albums and also compilations, and appeared in a number of films released on DVD.
14. LaVerne, Maxene, Patty

Answer: Entertaining the troops

The Andrews Sisters (and they really were sisters) came from Minnesota, and spent a lot of time during World War II entertaining the US troops with songs like "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree". Their career continued after the war and included work on stage, in the movies and on radio and TV. Patty, the youngest, was the last to pass away, in 2013 at the age of 94.

(Note: Though Bing, Bob and Dorothy may also have entertained the troops, the Andrews Sisters were not known for being on the road to exotic places.)
15. Mary, Paul, Peter

Answer: Blowing in the wind

Folk group Peter (Yarrow), Paul (Stookey) and Mary (Travers) had a hit in 1963 with Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind". Other hits included "Puff the Magic Dragon", written by Yarrow and Leonard Lipton; "If I Had a Hammer"; and "Leaving on a Jet Plane".
