Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which popular work of children's fiction are pink flamingos used for the unusual purpose of croquet mallets?

Answer: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

After Alice has been to the Hatter's tea party along with the March Hare and the Dormouse, she wanders into the garden and finds herself in the Queen's croquet ground. Several other characters arrive including the White Rabbit and the King and Queen of Hearts.

The Queen, a most formidable character, orders Alice to join in a game of croquet, a surreal version of the game in which live flamingos are used as the mallets, and hedgehogs take the place of the croquet balls.
2. The Prince's Palace of Monaco is sometimes dubbed the Pink Palace. Do you know the surname of Monaco's Royal Family, who reside there?

Answer: Grimaldi

The Prince's Palace of Monaco was originally a fortress from 1191. It was captured by the Grimaldis, an aristocratic Genoan family, in 1297 and a royal palace was later built around the original fort. When Prince Rainier III succeeded his grandfather Prince Louis II in 1949, the palace was falling into a state of disrepair. Prince Rainier was responsible for initiating the vast renovation work to transform the palace into the spectacular royal residence it is today.

Parts of the palace are open to the public and it is one of Monaco's most popular tourist attractions. Other attractions include the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix each year, one of the most important dates on the motor racing calendar. The Principality is also home to the world-famous Monte Carlo Casino.
3. Which album by Pink Floyd was adapted into a feature film in 1982 starring Bob Geldof of The Boomtown Rats as the character Pink?

Answer: The Wall

'The Wall', written by Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, deals with the emotional traumas of the central character Pink, and his feelings of alienation and isolation, hence the 'wall' he builds up around himself. The film does not have much dialogue between the characters, but instead features Pink Floyd's music.

It has a famous animated sequence of Britain during the Blitz of World War II as well as the live action. The animation was by noted English cartoonist Gerald Scarfe, widely known for his satirical caricatures, the first of which were frequently published in 'Private Eye' magazine.
4. Which newspaper, first published in London in 1888, is printed on salmon-pink paper?

Answer: Financial Times

All the above newspapers were established in England in the 19th century. The Financial Times, as its name suggests, gives its readers information on the world's financial markets including the London Stock Exchange. It is published from Monday to Saturday each week. Since 1893 the paper was printed on salmon-pink paper to distinguish it from its competitors and now its name is synonymous with the colour pink. From 1979 the company underwent a global expansion which saw its sales rocket and it is now available worldwide.
5. Which award-winning composer's music was used as the theme tune to the 'Pink Panther' films featuring the bumbling Inspector Clouseau?

Answer: Henry Mancini

Henry Mancini was born in Cleveland Ohio in 1924. As well as his memorable 'Pink Panther' theme tune he composed the music for several films and television programmes including 'Moon River', the theme tune to 1961 film 'Breakfast at Tiffany's, which won him and lyricist Johnny Mercer the Academy Award for Best Original Song in the 1962 Awards. Among several nominations and awards during his long and successful career he won a total of four Oscars and 20 Grammys.

Henry Mancini died in Los Angeles in 1994.
6. What was the name of American singer Pink's first single, released in 2000?

Answer: There You Go

'There You Go' was Pink's debut single, which enjoyed considerable chart success in several countries, making the top 10 in the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand. It is one of the tracks on her debut album 'Can't Take Me Home'.

Pink was born Alecia Beth Moore in Pennsylvania in 1979. She has won several musical awards including three Grammys. As well as her flourishing musical career she is also a charitable supporter and dedicated campaigner for animal charities.
7. Which rose is coloured a deep pink and has the unusual distinction of being almost thornless?

Answer: Zephirine Drouhin

Zephirine Drouhin is a climbing rose with deep pink flowers and a good fragrance. It is very hardy and reliable, even doing well in a north facing position. Because it is thornless, it is an excellent choice for families with small children and pets. The Papa Meilland rose is a highly-scented dark red hybrid tea rose. Peace has pale yellow petals edged with pink, while Anastasia is pure white.

The thornless aspect of the Zephirine Drouhin rose plays an important part in the plot of Agatha Christie's novel 'Sad Cypress' featuring Hercule Poirot, and helps him solve the case and exonerate an innocent suspect.
8. The song 'Lily the Pink' was a Christmas No 1 hit in the UK for British trio The Scaffold in 1968. The Scaffold included musician Mike McGear, who is the younger brother of which of The Beatles?

Answer: Paul McCartney

The Scaffold comprised Mike McGear, Roger McGough and John Gorman. They formed as a comedy/music group in Liverpool in 1962 and released several singles, 'Lily the Pink' being the most successful. They had previously enjoyed a hit with 'Thank U Very Much' in 1967. Mike McCartney did not want to cash in on his brother's fame, so adopted the stage name Mike McGear during his career, reverting to his original name when he retired from music in the early 1980s.
9. All these can be good for you, but the juice from which pink fruit is said to have particular health benefits by helping to lower harmful cholesterol?

Answer: Grapefruit

Grapefruit is a good source of Vitamin C, potassium and many other beneficial nutrients. The pink and red varieties also contain the antioxidant lycopene, which is found in tomatoes and other red/pink fruits and vegetables. Although studies have found the juice to have a number of health benefits, including reducing cholesterol, it can also have adverse and possibly serious interactions with several prescription drugs including statins, themselves a cholesterol-lowering drug. If you take any prescription medications (and also like grapefruit!) it is therefore important to check with your doctor if grapefruit and its juice can be safely included in your diet.
10. Metaphorically speaking, which pink creatures could you expect to hallucinate about as a result of drinking too much alcohol?

Answer: Elephants

The expression 'pink elephants' was first used by American author Jack London in his novel 'John Barleycorn'. Nowadays the term is commonly used to refer to hallucinations caused by over-imbibing; there is even a vodka-based cocktail named after the phenomenon.

There is a wonderful animated sequence in the Disney film 'Dumbo' when an inebriated Dumbo hallucinates about pink elephants in the song and dance routine 'Pink Elephants on Parade'.
