Elizabeth Peters Trivia Questions

1. Which major character makes their first appearance in this book?

From Quiz
The Last Camel Died at Noon

Answer: Nefret Forth

Nefret becomes Amelia and Emerson's adopted daughter. David first appears in "The Hippopotamus Pool", Sethos in "Lion in the Valley" and Cyrus in "The Curse of the Pharaohs".

2. The heroine of "The Murders of Richard III" is familiar to fans of Elizabeth Peters. What is her name?

From Quiz The Murders of Richard III

Answer: Jacqueline Kirby

Some other Jacquelin Kirby novels are "The Seventh Sinner" and "Die for Love".

3. What are the names of Ramses and Nefret's twins?

From Quiz Children of the Storm

Answer: Davy and Charla

The twins are two years old in this book. Davy was named after David, and Charla was named after Amelia's mother Charlotte.

4. According to Ramses, what is the most important part of a disguise?

From Quiz The Enigmatic Mr. Emerson

Answer: movements and gestures

Ramses actually "disguised" himself as himself. He fooled Wardani's men into thinking that he was Wardani disguised as the Brother of Demons. All he actually did was change the way he moved.

5. When the novel opens, the Emersons were on the terrace of Shepherd's hotel waiting for Ramses and David. How long had Ramses and David been away?

From Quiz Seeing a Large Cat

Answer: 6 months

Since Ramses was sixteen and David was eighteen, Amelia allowed them to spend six months with Sheikh Mohammed, an Arab who would teach them how to "be men".

6. In the first Vicky Bliss mystery, "Borrower of the Night", what is the name of the young countess who is being controlled by her grandmother?

From Quiz Vicky Bliss

Answer: Irma

Elfrida was Irma's conrolling grandmother, and Konstanze was Irma's ancestor. Vicky discovers that Konstanze killed her husband, the count, and stole the Riemenschneider shrine from him.

7. The first book in the series is "Crocodile on the Sandbank". This title came from an ancient papyrus. Who was the owner of this papyrus?

From Quiz Titles of the Amelia Peabody Series

Answer: Lucas

Lord Lucas Ellesmere was Evelyn's cousin. He had bought an ancient papyrus and asked Walter to translate it for everyone. The papyrus read: "The love of the sister is upon yonder side; a stretch of water is between, and a crocodile waiteth upon the sandbank".

8. In the beginning of the book, Nefret is reading a book written by whom?

From Quiz "The Falcon at the Portal"

Answer: Percy

Percy wrote a book that described how he rescued himself and an Arab prince from captivity. The book is a pack of lies, because Percy made no attempt to free himself. He was going to wait for his ransom to come from the Emersons, and then be freed. The poor Arabic prince he "saved", was actually Ramses in disguise, who let himself be captured so he could save his cousin Percy.

9. In the prologue, there is a story about a boy going home for the holidays. He sees a boy and his mother in the snow, and wants to help them. At the end of the book, we find out who the boy returning home is. Who is he?

From Quiz "He Shall Thunder in the Sky"

Answer: Emerson

Emerson was the boy in the carriage going home. He tells his mother about the woman and boy in the snow, and asks her to help them. She says they were at the house, asking for help, and she refused them. It turns out the woman was Emerson's father's girlfriend on the side, and the boy was his illegitimate son (therefore, being Emerson and Walter's half-brother). At the end of the book, we find out the boy in the snow was Sethos, Emerson's enemy.

10. In which book do Amelia and Emerson meet?

From Quiz The Amelia Peabody Series

Answer: Crocodile on the Sandbank

They meet in a museum shop when Amelia picked up an antiquity and Emerson yelled at her for touching it.

11. What is Ramses' full name?

From Quiz Ramses Emerson

Answer: Walter Peabody Emerson

Ramses was named after his father's brother Walter and also bears his mother's maiden name. His father dubbed him "Ramses" as a child because, according to Emerson, he is "swarthy as an Egyptian and arrogant as a pharaoh". The nickname has stuck, and I doubt if anyone within the Emerson family has called him "Walter" since!

12. Amelia Peabody appears first in "Crocodile on a Sandbank". What is her maiden name?

From Quiz Amelia Peabody and Co

Answer: Peabody

Amelia Peabody becomes Amelia Emerson after marrying Radcliffe Emerson, but throughout the series Emerson generally addresses her as "Peabody". She, in turn, almost always calls him "Emerson".

13. What is the name of the Egyptian fairy tale that Amelia is translating into English?

From Quiz "The Snake, the Crocodile, and the Dog"

Answer: "The Doomed Prince"

The fairy tale told an interesting story. A king had a son, and it was predicted that the son would be killed by a snake, a crocodile, or a dog. "Wadi" is the Arabic word for canyon.

14. Pat Robbins, the protagonist of "The Walker in Shadows", is a widow when Josef Friedrich moves in next door. Pat and Josef each have a teenager in the house. What exactly is the set up during the first half of the book?

From Quiz The Other Face of Elizabeth Peters

Answer: Pat's son Mark falls in love with Josef's daughter, Kathy; Josef objects

Josef is not a bit pleased when Mark starts 'seeing' Kathy, but then the haunting starts and eventually the whole four get together to sort things out. Like Georgette Heyer, Barbara Michaels sometimes runs two romances per book, juxtaposing a middle-aged couple with a younger one.

15. What is Amelia's profession?

From Quiz The Amazing Amelia Peabody

Answer: Egyptologist

Amelia had a fascination for pyramids, which was revealed in the first book in the series, "Crocodile in the Sandbank". Her wish to excavate a pyramid was finally fulfilled in "Lion in the Valley".

16. When Amelia goes to Rome, she meets a girl whom she hires as a companion, named Evelyn. What is Evelyn's last name?

From Quiz "Crocodile on the Sandbank"

Answer: Barton-Forbes

Evelyn fainted in the streets from hunger, so Amelia took her in and hired her as a companion to travel with her.

17. What is Arthur Baskerville's alias in "The Curse of the Pharaohs"?

From Quiz Random Amelia Peabody

Answer: Charles Milverton

He is posing as a photographer for the expedition.

18. Where do Amelia and Emerson first meet?

From Quiz Amelia Peabody

Answer: The Egyptian Museum

They first meet in the museum when, of course, Emerson is yelling and insulting Amelia. The meeting takes place in the first book, "Crocodile on the Sandbank".

19. What is Amelia Peabody's son's nickname?

From Quiz Easy Elizabeth Peters Mix

Answer: Ramses

As a child, Ramses has a fascination with mummifying small rodents.

20. What three surnames does MPM stand for?

From Quiz Elizabeth Peters Etc.

Answer: Mertz, Peters, Michaels

Barbara Mertz is the real name of the author whose pseudonyms are Elizabeth Peters and Barbara Michaels.

21. What is the name of the elderly aristocrat who visits the Emersons at the start of the story?

From Quiz The Last Camel Died at Noon

Answer: Viscount Blacktower

Viscount Blacktower was the grandfather of Nefret Forth and Reggie Forthright. The other three are all genuine peerages which existed when the book takes place.

22. The book starts with the heroine and her long-time friend having a discussion in a particular setting. What is it?

From Quiz The Murders of Richard III

Answer: National Portrait Gallery, London

Jacqueline is spending the summer in England. The National Portrait Gallery is one of the "must-see" tourist spots she wants to visit. Incidentally she finds Richard III much more "sexy" looking than Henry VII or even Edward IV who was a famous womanizer.

23. What is the name of the restorer Cyrus hired to restore the ancient jewelry?

From Quiz Children of the Storm

Answer: Martinelli

Martinelli had once worked for Sethos, but Sethos claimed Martinelli had reformed. Cyrus hired him to restore the jewelry he found in the tomb of a princess.

24. When Ramses and Amelia are in the garden in "He Shall Thunder in the Sky", what does Ramses compare his mother to?

From Quiz The Enigmatic Mr. Emerson

Answer: a lady dragon

"I discovered years ago that lying to you is a waste of breath. How the devil do you do it? Look at you - ruffles trailing, gloves spotless - blowing out smoke like a little lady dragon and prying into the most intimate secrets of a fellow's life." This part, where Ramses tells Amelia that he's always loved Nefret, is one of my favorite parts in the whole series.

25. Emerson gets a note warning him away from which tomb?

From Quiz Seeing a Large Cat

Answer: Twenty-A

Amelia finds out that there is no such tomb recorded, and assumes that it must be in between tomb twenty and twenty-one. In this supposed tomb the Emersons find the preserved body of Lucinda Bellingham.

26. Vicky Bliss encounters Sir John Smythe for the first time in "Street of the Five Moons". Where does this meeting take place?

From Quiz Vicky Bliss

Answer: antiques shop

John is the "manager" of an antiques shop, and this is where Vicky first meets him. However, John and Vicky are not formally introduced until later, when they go to Pietro Caravaggio's mansion.

27. The fourth book in the series is "Lion in the Valley". According to the poem at the beginning of the book, which god was the "lion in the valley"?

From Quiz Titles of the Amelia Peabody Series

Answer: Set

Most of the books in the series start with an ancient Egyptian poem. This poem read: "...As is Set upon his mountain... Like a wild lion in a valley of goats."

28. Who is accused of making Egyptian forgeries?

From Quiz "The Falcon at the Portal"

Answer: David

David had been the slave of one of the best forgers in Egypt. David is also a skilled artist. Someone made the forgeries and then sold them under David's name.

29. This book takes place during which war?

From Quiz "He Shall Thunder in the Sky"

Answer: World War One

This book takes place in 1914, during WWI. Emerson dislikes the war (as did everyone) because it interferes with his excavations. Also, Johnny and Willy, Evelyn and Walter's twin sons, are off in France fighting.

30. What animal lies down on Amelia's flowerbed in "He Shall Thunder in the Sky"?

From Quiz The Amelia Peabody Series

Answer: Camel

Emerson stole the camel because he needed a method of transportation from one of Ramses' meetings with the revolutionaries. Once Emerson came home, he left the camel, which then sat in Amelia's flowerbed and destroyed most of her flowers.
