In the Preface to the book, there is a story about a boy who is coming home for the holidays during a snowstorm in a carriage and sees a boy and a woman coming toward him. The boy in the snow is the boy in the carriage's half brother. We later find out the boy in the carriage is Emerson and the boy in the snow is Sethos.

We find this out in "Children of the Storm". Amelia had always wanted to find out his real name, and he would never tell her, but finally did in "Children of the Storm". He picked Sethos because it was so close to his real name and the ancient king fit him.
