Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which major character makes their first appearance in this book?

Answer: Nefret Forth

Nefret becomes Amelia and Emerson's adopted daughter. David first appears in "The Hippopotamus Pool", Sethos in "Lion in the Valley" and Cyrus in "The Curse of the Pharaohs".
2. What is the name of the elderly aristocrat who visits the Emersons at the start of the story?

Answer: Viscount Blacktower

Viscount Blacktower was the grandfather of Nefret Forth and Reggie Forthright. The other three are all genuine peerages which existed when the book takes place.
3. What is the first name of the explorer Forth, for whom the Emersons are searching?

Answer: Willoughby

Willoughby, or Willie Forth was an eccentric explorer who was last heard of looking for a lost civilisation.
4. Which ancient Egyptian deity is the chief god of the Holy Mountain?

Answer: Aminreh

Aminreh is a corruption of Amon-Re who is the chief god of the New Kingdom. He was a combination of Amon, the patron of Thebes and Re the sun god. Osiris and Isis were husband and wife and Horus was their son. Osiris was killed by his brother Set with whom he was at odds.

There appear to be parallels between the ancient Egyption pantheon and the Emerson family; Emerson=Osiris, Amelia=Isis, Ramses=Horus and Sethos=Set.
5. When he first saw her, what did Ramses tell his parents was unusual about the High Priestess of Isis?

Answer: She spoke English

All these things are true of Nefret, but when they first saw her, participating in a ceremony, she was veiled from head to foot so the only one of these things that they could observe was her ability to speak English.
6. Which book is used as a means of identifying the Friend of the Rekkit?

Answer: King Solomon's Mines

Mentarit shows Amelia a copy of "King Solomon's Mines" as proof that she is trustworthy. "The Moonstone" is the book used by Amenit when she tries to trick the Emersons into believing her. Emerson and Murtek discuss "Hamlet" but Emerson isn't shown a book. Amelia buries her Bible in the desert after the last camel dies and they are forced to continue on foot.
7. What is the meaning of the name Nefret?

Answer: Beautiful maiden

Tarek tells us this when he is talking about Nefret's early history. Light of Egypt is the nickname Nefret is given later by their Egyptian friends. Work or ambition is the meaning of Amelia and ruler of the people is Walter, Ramses' real name.
8. With what does Amelia accidently poison Amenit?

Answer: Castor oil

Amelia leaves a bowl of castor oil lying about and Amenit drinks it. The other three are all ways of making Amenit ill which Amelia and Emerson discuss, but they decide against it.
9. What is the title which Mrs Forth adopted in the Holy Mountain?

Answer: Heneshem

Mrs Forth loses her mind after the birth of her daughter and becomes the Heneshem or the God's Wife of Amon. The Candace is the Queen Mother, Nefret is the High Priestess of Isis and the Handmaidens of the Goddess are the medical practitioners of the civilisation who take care of Amelia.
10. Who disarms Reggie at the very end of the book?

Answer: Nefret

Nefret is disguised as a camel rider and uses a sceptre which she is smuggling out of the city to hook the gun out of Reggie's arm.
