Peter had left the Di-Ahman settlement and gone after their lost horse. He was caught by mobbers when he tried to help a man who had been whipped. The mobbers tied Peter to a tree and would have whipped him if Matthew and Nathan had not come and rescued him. Nathan was whipped in book two and Benjamin was beaten in book three.

He eventually was forced to shoot one of the men. The other two managed to catch Joshua when he was sneaking out of town. They shot him and left him for dead. He survived, but ended up partly paralized.

Their story is one of the most well-known in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
