Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The book starts with the Steed family discussing special visitors to the Kirtland Temple. Who restored the keys of the gathering of Israel?

Answer: Moses

Christ came first and accepted his temple. Elijah brought the keys to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, fulfilling the prophecy from Malachi 5:3-4. Elias appeared and committed the dispensation of the gospel of Abraham.
2. Where did Joshua meet Caroline Mendenhall and her two children, Will and Olivia?

Answer: Savannah, Georgia

Savannah was one of many places to buy cotton. Joshua first met Will on the docks. Will showed him around Savannah and helped introduce him to a cotton factor. Eventually, Joshua met and fell in love with Will's mother, Caroline.
3. Which young man wished to marry Rebecca, but she said no because he was not a member of the Church?

Answer: Arthur Wilkinson

After she rejected him, Arthur turned mean, telling all sorts of falsehoods about Rebecca and she was teased and tormented by his friends. At one point in the book, Matthew confronted Arthur and told him to leave Rebecca alone or he would give him eyes to match the color of his boots!
4. What did the temperance sign in Preston say when Heber C. Kimball and his companions arrived?

Answer: Truth Will Prevail

Heber C. Kimball took it for a sign regarding the coming of the missionaries. It is also where the book gets its name. Derek and Peter Ingalls (new characters this book) see the missionaries arrive and get excited by this sign being hung, though they don't yet know why.
5. Peter and Derek Ingalls were alone because their family had died. From what disease did they die?

Answer: cholera

While all of these diseases caused many deaths at this time, we know that they lost their parents, two brothers, two sisters and three in-laws to a cholera epidemic. Derek was fifteen at the time and Peter only seven.
6. Jessica is the first of all the Steeds to move to Far West.

Answer: true

Jessica stays in Far West for a time before going to Haun's Mill. Then Matthew moves out to help Jessica and Rachel. When Jessica married John Griffiths, they settle in Far West, but soon after Matthew switches with them, so they end up back in Haun's Mill. Matthew is followed by his parents, then Derek and Peter, and finally Nathan, Lydia and their children with Rebecca. Joshua, of course, already lives in Missouri and Carl and Melissa stay in Kirtland, Ohio.
7. Which Steed family member doubted Joseph Smith in this book?

Answer: Benjamin

Many prominent church members fell away at this time, including all three witnesses to the Book of Mormon - Oliver Cowdery, Martin Harris and David Whitmer - as well as several members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
8. When Derek and Peter first arrived in Kirtland, OH, who answered the door?

Answer: Rebecca

Rebecca had stayed behind to help Nathan and Lydia until they could move to Missouri. Rebecca opened the door to find Derek and Peter Ingalls, immigrants from England, with a letter of introduction from Heber C. Kimball. Derek and Rebecca took an instant like to each other and they eventually married, though not until book four, "Thy Gold to Refine".
9. Who does NOT marry in this book?

Answer: Rebecca and Derek

Jessica and Joshua are both lucky enough to find someone new to marry. Both marry a widow/widower with two children. Hyrum Smith marries Mary Fielding when his first wife, Jerusha dies. Joseph receives revelation that Hyrum should marry Mary Fielding so his children would have a mother. Though they barely knew each other, they did marry.

Their story is one of the most well-known in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
10. Which parable did Joseph discuss in order to reunite Joshua with his family?

Answer: The Unmerciful Servant

This scripture can be found in Matthew 18:23-34. Two men owe debts. One owes a huge debt to his Lord, but the Lord forgives the debt. The man then turns to another servant, who owes him a pittance and, when the second man can't pay, he has him thrown in jail.

The Lord finds out and is upset. He reinstates the first man's debt and has HIM thrown in prison. Joseph talks about the debts Joshua owes his family because of his previous sins. His greatest debts are to his wife, Jessica who he beat and threw out and to his brother, Nathan, who he had whipped. Jessica and Nathan forgive Joshua readily, but Benjamin cannot at first forgive his son for these injustices.
