Natalie Maines is the lead singer for the American country music band The Dixie Chicks, formed in 1989 in Dallas, Texas; the other members include sisters Emily Robison and Martie Maguire. Aside from winning over a dozen Grammy Awards, The Dixie Chicks obtained a good deal of notoriety in London in March 2003 (right before the invasion of Iraq), when Maines said "We don't want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas". The reaction in the US to Natalie's comment by conservatives was mostly negative and involved boycotts, which The Dixie Chicks later followed up with the song "Not Ready To Make Nice". BTW, the wrong answers were all in The Dixie Cups.

The Hollies had a UK number two hit in 1964 and a US number 98 in 1964 and number 44 in 1967 with a cover version of the song. She later sang backing vocals on "Dark Side Of The Moon" by Pink Floyd. Betty Everett had a number six hit on the US pop chart with "The Soop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)" in 1964. It reached number 34 on the UK chart in 1968. Cher had number 33 hit on the US pop chart and a number one hit for five weeks on the UK chart in 1991 with a cover version of "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss).

In 2002 they entered the "Guinness Book of Records" as the longest surviving vocal group without a change of line up, and in 2006 were given the MBE in the New Year Honours List. Their best known song is "Sisters", which became their unofficial theme tune.

The Blossoms were out of Los Angeles, and were originally called The Dreamers when they started recording as a group of six high school girls in 1954. They had little chart success. The group added a new singer named Darlene Love in 1958, but still had no success with charting hits. Then came 1962. Phil Spector needed a group to record a song called "He's A Rebel" which he had acquired from singer/songwriter Gene Pitney. He was going to let the group called "The Crystals" record it, but problems between him and the group prompted him to record the song using The Blossoms, with Darlene Love out front and using the name "The Crystals". Needless to say, the song was a number one smash hit. Thus, there were two groups with the same name, both controlled by Spector. They also did backup for Shelley Fabares in the aforementioned "Johnny Angel", and helped The Bob B. Sox and the Blue Jeans with their hit "Zip A Dee Doo Dah" The group later appeared on the television show "Shindig" and did backup vocals for various artists all the way into the 1970s. Darlene stepped out of the business for a while but returned in the 1980s to be part of a show on Broadway called "Leader Of The Pack" and also was a co-star in the movies, playing the wife of Danny Glover's character in the "Lethal Weapon" series.

Moving along to the 1970s, Silver Convention was a popular Euro disco act from Munich, Germany originally calling themselves Silver Bird Convention. They started out as a studio group featuring Linda G. Thompson, Penny McLean (was there a barber showing photographs?) and Jackie Carter. In 1975 they produced a successful single in the UK called "Save Me" and expanded to later add Ramona Wulf as lead singer, Zenda Jacks and Rhonda Heath. That same year they made a number one hit single with "Fly, Robin, Fly" which used only sin words in the whole song, i.e., "Fly, Robin, Up, To, The, Sky". They followed that in 1976 with another number one, "Get Up and Boogie" - only six words ("That's, Right").

Ruby and The Romantics had a number 48 hit on the US pop chart with "When You're Young And In Love" in 1964. It failed to chart in the UK.

"You Can't Hurry Love" was number one for two weeks on the US pop chart in 1966 and was The Supremes seventh US number one. It reached number three on the UK chart in 1966. "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" was number two for two weeks on the US pop chart in 1969. It reached number three on the UK chart in 1969.

The Boswell Sisters were well known in their home town in the 1920s, playing local theatres and appearing on local radio shows. They did not come to national attention until the early 1930s, when they moved to New York and started recording for Brunswick Records. Their last record was made in 1935 and they split up in 1936.

They had their biggest success with the above mentioned recording which were both on the charts in 1963. "Don't Say Nothin'" came in at number seven on Billboard's Pop Singles charts, and "Chains" was a number 17 hit which was later covered by The Beatles. Both songs were recorded under the direction of Gerry Goffin and Carole King, two of the pre-eminent writer/producer teams of the era.
