Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Natalie, Martie, Emily

Answer: Dixie Chicks

The Dixie Chicks are a female band which started in Dallas, Texas in 1989. Their members include: Natalie Maines, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire, with past members Laura Tull and Robin Macy. Among their Grammy winning albums is 2007's "Taking the Long Way" which included the hit single "Not Ready to Make Nice".

They are also famous for saying that they were "ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas" when discussing George W. Bush in 2003, just days before the invasion of Iraq.
2. Patty, LaVerne, Maxene

Answer: Andrews Sisters

You may not be old enough to remember the singing Andrews Sisters who started out in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1925. Patty, Maxene and LaVerne Andrews were famous for their harmonies and their 'boogie-woogie' sound. Their big 1941 hit, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", has been covered more recently by Bette Midler and Christina Aguilera.

In 1998, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
3. June, Anita, Ruth, Bonnie

Answer: Pointer Sisters

"I'm So Excited" to discuss one of the most popular singing groups of the 1970s and 1980s, i.e., the Pointer Sisters. They started out in Oakland, California in 1969, combining genres like blues, rock, soul, funk, disco and more. June and Bonnie Pointer began as a duo and were soon joined by Anita.

In 1972 they became a quartet when Ruth joined; in 1978, Bonnie dropped out to become a solo artist. In the 1980s, June, Anita and Ruth scored huge hits with "He's So Shy" (1980), "Slow Hand" (1981), "Jump" (1984) and "Neutron Dance" in 1985.
4. Florence, Mary, Diana

Answer: Supremes

You can't have a discussion of famous 'girl groups' without mentioning The Supremes. Originally called the Primettes in Detroit, Michigan in 1959, they helped to make Berry Gordy's Motown sound popular. The founding 'girls' included: Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross and Betty McGlown.

In 1960 they became a trio; in 1967 Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross and the Supremes, based on Ross' success as the lead singer. Among their number one hits were "Where Did our Love Go?", "Come See About Me" "Stop! In the Name of Love" and "Baby Love", all in the mid-1960s.
5. Terry, Dawn, Maxine, Cindy

Answer: En Vogue

En Vogue, an R&B/pop group, was founded in Oakland, California in 1988 with Terry Ellis, Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron and Maxine Jones. Their recording of "Hold On" from their 1990 debut album "Born to Sing" soared to number two on the US Hot 100 chart. En Vogue's second album "Funky Divas", in 1992, gave us more Top Ten hits, i.e., "My Lovin'", "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" and "Free Your Mind".

In 2015, Billboard magazine named En Vogue "the ninth most successful girl group of all time".
6. Lisa, Tionne, Rozonda ("Chili")

Answer: TLC

If I put their names in the proper order, i.e., Tionne, Lisa and "Chili", would you have guessed that the group is TLC (unless you already knew)? With its origin in Atlanta, Georgia in 1990, the group originally included Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and Rozonda "Chili" Thomas (who was replaced by Crystal Jones).

The R&B group had four singles which went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: "Creep", "No Scrubs", "Unpretty" and, my personal favorite, the beautiful "Waterfalls", released in the US on May 29, 1995. Sadly, in 2002, Lisa was killed in a car accident in Honduras.
7. Wendy, Carnie, Chynna

Answer: Wilson Phillips

With Wilson Phillips, we are dealing with some excellent genes provided by the parents of the group members. We have Wendy and Carnie Wilson, daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, and Chynna Phillips whose parents are John and Michele Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas.

The group was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1989. Their first album, "Wilson Phillips", in 1990, produced three hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, one of which was the very popular song "Hold On". In 2012, the group had their own reality show (didn't everyone?) and, in 2015, they contributed back-up vocals to the song "FourFiveSeconds" by Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney.
8. Anne, Jeanette, Gioia

Answer: Exposé

I thought this one was difficult. The vocal group Exposé was formed in Miami, Florida in 1984 with Ann Curless, Jeanette Jurado and Gioia Bruno. Their debut album in 1987 produced four top ten hits on the Billboard 100 chart, including the number one single "Seasons Change". Among their hits over the years, with changing members: "Point of No Return" (1985), the dance hit "Come Go with Me" and "Let Me Be the One", both in 1987.

Other hits which followed were "What You Don't Know", "When I Looked at Him" and "Tell Me Why".
9. Shirley, Doris, Addie, Beverly

Answer: Shirelles

Going back to the early days, predating Motown, another one of the 'girl groups' that started it all was the Shirelles, also called the Poquellos, and Shirley and the Shirelles. The group started in 1957 in Passaic, New Jersey with schoolmates Shirley Owens, Doris Coley, Addie "Micki" Harris, and Beverly Lee.

Their first break-out hit was "Tonight's the Night" from the 1961 album of the same name. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. In addition, both "Tonight's the Night" and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" were included on Rolling Stone's "list of the greatest songs of all time".
10. Susanna, Vicki, Debbie, Annette

Answer: Bangles

The Bangles formed as a pop rock band in Los Angeles, California in 1981. Throughout the 1980s, they continued to produce major hits like "Walk Like an Egyptian" (which, of course, we all tried to do); according to Billboard magazine, the song was the number one hit of 1987. "Manic Monday" was another hit from the same 1986 album "Different Light". From 1987's "Less than Zero" came my favorite song, "Hazy Shade of Winter".

The Bangles also scored with the beautiful number one hit song "Eternal Flame", from the 1988 album "Everything".

The members are Susanna Hoffs, Debbi Peterson, Vicki Peterson and Annette Zilinskas.
