Worst Songs Lists Trivia Questions

1. For four weeks at the end of 2000 and start of 2001 "How You Remind Me" was top of the Billboard Hot 100. It also earned a place on a list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time". Who sang it?

From Quiz
The Bottom 40: America's Worst Number Ones? Part 4

Answer: Nickleback

"How You Remind Me" spent four weeks at the top of the Hot 100. It was the Canadian outfit's only Billboard number one. Now, to say that Nickelback were not everyone's cup of coffee is an understatement. Jimmy Carter was once famously described as "the Charlie Brown of presidents". On the "Jimmy Kimmel" show, Barack Obama had to read a tweet declaring himself "the Nickelback of presidents". Chad Kroeger, the lead singer, wrote "How You Remind Me", which was to be covered by Avril Lavigne, to whom he was married for two years.

2. Which band, noted for not singing the hits they were supposed to have sung, gets a place on our list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time" with the Hot 100 number one "Blame It On The Rain"?

From Quiz The Bottom 40: America's Worst Number Ones? Part 3

Answer: Milli Vanilli

"Blame It On The Rain" topped the Hot 100 for two weeks in 1989. I have made up the three wrong answers here. I hope. Milli Vanilli was the duo Fabrice Moran and Rob Pilatus and were active from 1988 to 1991. In 1989 they had a massive European hit with "Girl You Know It's True", which was a cover of an earlier release by The Numarx. German producer Frank Farian made the cover, using singers John Davis and Brad Howell and rapper Charles Shaw. However, Moran and Pilatus were publicly said to be the singers, until Shaw outed them after it had sold over seven million copies. In 1989, "Blame It On The Rain" was the last of three US number ones for the duo. They later admitted they had never sung on any of the Milli Vanilli recordings.

3. On a list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time" is a cover of a song that also made little sense first time around. Which disco diva loved to love you, but maybe should have stayed out of "MacArthur Park"?

From Quiz The Bottom 40: America's Worst Number Ones? Part 2

Answer: Donna Summer

In 1968, Richard Harris took "MacArthur Park" to number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Ten years later Donna Summer went one better. This was one of four number ones for Summer as a solo or duetting artist. "MacArthur Park" was written by Jimmy Webb, who had a respected list of hits under his belt, including "Up, Up and Away", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", "Wichita Lineman", and "Galveston". Summer stayed top for three weeks until Neil Diamond and Barbara Streisand came along with "You Don't Bring Me Flowers".

4. In our list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time" is a song released in 1958 by Alvin And The Chipmunks that topped the Billboard Hot 100. What was it called?

From Quiz The Bottom 40: America's Worst Number Ones? Part 1

Answer: The Chipmunk Song

The Billboard Hot 100 was in its infancy when Alvin And The Chipmunks went to number one for four weeks in December 1958. It was only the eighth number one on the Hot 100. In one form or another, the animated Chipmunks were to continue until 2012.

5. #60: "Make 'Em Say Uhh!" made it to 60th place on the 100 Worst Songs Ever list. Who sang it?

From Quiz Top of the Bottom 5

Answer: Master P.

"Make 'Em Say Uhh!" was one of Master P.'s biggest hits, though it wasn't well liked by Wilkening. The song was released on Master P.'s album "Ghetto D" in 1997. It not only made it to AOL Radio's 100 Worst Songs Ever, but it also made it to Blender's 50 Worst Songs Ever, ranked at 36. Wilkening said of the song: "Why does Master P sound so constipated in this song? Someone please get him some laxatives ..."

6. #70: Perhaps Chris de Burgh's biggest hit, this song happened to be 70th of the 100 Worst Songs Ever list. What love song has Chris singing about what his wife wore when they first met?

From Quiz Top of the Bottom 4

Answer: The Lady in Red

Chris de Burgh was born as Christopher John Davison on October 15, 1948. "The Lady in Red" was one of de Burgh's biggest hits, and most definitely his biggest hit on his 1986 album "Into the Light". His daughter, Rosanna Davison, won Miss World 2003.

7. #80: Coming in at number 80 is "My Humps", which was a huge hit for this band when it first came out, but now has appeared in the list of the 100 Worst Songs Ever. Who sings "My Humps"?

From Quiz Top of the Bottom 3

Answer: Black Eyed Peas

The Black Eyed Peas has four members: Fergie, will.i.am, Taboo, and apl.de.ap. "My Humps" is a song about a woman's 'parts', and this is what put the song on the list of the Worst Songs Ever. The song was released in 2005 on the album "Monkey Business".

8. #90: Repetition is horrible for the reputation of a song. Don Johnson proved this with his song which placed 90th on the list of 100 worst songs ever. What song is his?

From Quiz Top of the Bottom 2

Answer: Heartbeat

Don Johnson (born 1949) is an actor most noted for his roles in "Miami Vice" and "Nash Bridges". He also made several albums, including "Heartbeat" in 1986, the album in which the song of the same name appears. This earworm is very repetitious, with Johnson singing "heartbeat" over and over. This landed him the 90th spot of the 100 Worst Songs Ever!

9. At number 9 in the gruesome top 100 was "Achy Breaky Heart", a hit in 1992. Who was responsible for this little gem?

From Quiz The Worst Pop Records Ever!

Answer: Billy Ray Cyrus

Much ridicule was directed at the lyrics of "Achy Breaky Heart", which is possibly why it is now much hated. Jimmy Nail escaped the list but Michael Bolton was laughed at for "Can I Touch You...There" and Rednex "Cotton Eye Joe" was listed as no one seemed to know what the band were on about!

10. "Opposites Attract", or so they say, and enough people were attracted by a song of that name to take it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Who did Paula Abdul duet with to earn a place among "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time"?

From Quiz The Bottom 40: America's Worst Number Ones? Part 3

Answer: A cartoon cat

MC Skat Cat was the other voice on the record. A follow-up record and TV series from the furry creature went down the mousehole Fortunately for Abdul, her career had nine lives and that was only one of them gone. "Opposites Attract" was number one for three weeks in 1990.

11. On a list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time" is a song that almost inexplicably prompted the answer "yes" from some quarters. Who took "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" to the top of the Billboard Hot 100?

From Quiz The Bottom 40: America's Worst Number Ones? Part 2

Answer: Rod Stewart

In 1979 "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" was the Billboard US pop number one for four weeks. Rod Stewart provides something of a conundrum for music lovers. Many of his hits seem a bit on the cheesy side, but he actually is not a bad songwriter. It is true, though, that Stewart set aside his songwriting pen for many years, picking it up again in 2013 after a break of a quarter of a century. "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? was written with Carmine Appice and Duane Hitchings.

12. Apologies in advance for putting this song into your heads, but on our list of the "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time" is "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini". Who sang it in 1960?

From Quiz The Bottom 40: America's Worst Number Ones? Part 1

Answer: Brian Hyland

Fortunately, American audiences only had to put up with this as top of the Billboard Hot 100 for one week in 1960. Brian Hyland was bracketed at the top by Brenda Lee and Elvis Presley. The song was to be a hit in other countries, including the UK, Austria, Norway, and Ireland. In 1990 children's entertainer Timmy Mallet took a cover version to the top of the UK charts under the name of Bombalurina.

13. #49: For reasons I will not go into, "The Bad Touch" made the list at number 49. Who sang this song?

From Quiz Top of the Bottom 6

Answer: The Bloodhound Gang

WARNING: There is not much I can say about this song in here without giving you the "reader discretion is advised" bit. So... Reader discretion is advised. "The Bad Touch" was released in 1999 in Europe and in 2000 in the US. The single's cover features two mating zebras, which, sadly, is quite fitting for the lyrics found within the song. It came from the album "Hooray for Boobies", and the cover, well, yeah.

14. #59: Bette Midler made the list with a song originally written by Julie Gold. Which song of Midler's, from her "Some People's Lives" album, was this?

From Quiz Top of the Bottom 5

Answer: From a Distance

The song was originally written by Julie Gold in 1985, but Bette Midler sang "From a Distance" in 1990. It was featured on her album "Some People's Lives". She remade the song in 2006 for her Christmas album "Cool Yule". As we have learned from other songs on the list, repetition is a surefire way of getting on AOL Radio's 100 Worst Songs Ever.

15. #69: "Liquid Dreams" made it onto the list this time. The song was on the album with the same name as the band. What boy band released "Liquid Dreams" in 2001?

From Quiz Top of the Bottom 4

Answer: O-Town

"Liquid Dreams" was released on O-Town's debut album, self titled, in early 2001. O-Town didn't last long, even though boy bands were popular in the early 2000s, but they reunited in 2011. Matthew Wilkening said of the song: "We had a contest as to who could listen to this the most times? The winner lasted 38 seconds. Oh, and he's deaf."

16. Here, according to Channel 4 viewers, is another criminal record. "(Everything I Do) I Do it for You". But who did it?

From Quiz Jukebox Jury

Answer: Bryan Adams

This track featured in the film "Robin Hood Prince of Thieves" starring Kevin Costner. Bryan Adams had a marathon chart run in the UK with "(Everything I Do) I Do it for You" in 1991. It featured in the "Worst 100" chart at #14.

17. A cover version of "Against All Odds" managed to make the number 16 position in the top 100. Which singer and band did the dirty deed?

From Quiz The Worst Pop Records Ever!

Answer: Mariah Carey and Westlife

Mariah Carey has sold millions of records, while Irish band Westlife had their first seven singles enter the UK charts at number one. "Against All Odds" was previously a hit for Phil Collins.

18. There can surely be no doubts about the inclusion of "You're Beautiful" on "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time". Who sang it?

From Quiz The Bottom 40: America's Worst Number Ones? Part 4

Answer: James Blunt

I doubt if there are any insults about the song that James Blunt has not heard. It topped the Hot 100 for a week in 2006. "Rolling Stone" magazine dubbed it "one of the ten most annoying songs of all time." Blunt served as a captain in the British Army in Kosovo and claims to have kept a guitar strapped to his tank. He also claims to have co-written "You're Beautiful" with Sacha Skarbek and Amanda Ghost in two minutes. I'll pause for a second to let that sink in. I know what you're thinking..."It took three of them?" In January 2020, Blunt told the "Guardian" newspaper: "I had no idea the song would be such a big hit, and it scared me at first. I thought I'd just be a musician putting out music. The song [released in 2004] became so ubiquitous that it started to irritate people, but I'm still proud of it and I love my job. I sang it at Elton John and David Furnish's civil ceremony and I'm about to start my sixth world tour. Without 'You're Beautiful', it'd be a tour of north London." The song topped the Hot 100 for one week in 2006. It was also a chart topper in the UK and nine other territories.

19. "The Best That You Can Do" may have been the best of Christopher Cross, but it still merits a place on a date-ordered list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time". Which movie did it come from?

From Quiz The Bottom 40: America's Worst Number Ones? Part 2

Answer: Arthur

"Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in 1981. It was also Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. Writing credits go to Cross, Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, and Peter Allen.

20. In a list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time" was a song by Bobby "Boris" Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers. What was it called?

From Quiz The Bottom 40: America's Worst Number Ones? Part 1

Answer: The Monster Mash

"The Monster Mash" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in 1962. So, you hate it: but did Bobby Pickett care? - not a bit, it got wheeled out every Halloween and he picked up the royalty checks each year until his death in 2007. The Beach Boys also liked it enough to play it in concert.

21. #48: "(You're) Having My Baby". Interesting name for a song. It became this man's first number one single in fifteen years; his previous being "Lonely Boy". However, it made it on number 48 of AOL Radio's Worst Songs Ever list. Who sang it?

From Quiz Top of the Bottom 6

Answer: Paul Anka

Paul Anka released the single "(You're) Having My Baby" in 1974, his first number one hit single since "Lonely Boy" of 1959. Though the song gained a lot of popularity, in 2006 it was called the number one worst song of all time by CNN.com. And, of course, it was listed as the 48th worst song of all time by Matthew Wilkening of AOL Radio.

22. #58: A single name is all that is needed for this star, who made it to the list of the 100 Worst Songs Ever with the song "American Life". The electronica-like sound is catchy, but very annoying. So it made the list. Who sang the song?

From Quiz Top of the Bottom 5

Answer: Madonna

"American Life" was released on Madonna's 2003 album of the same name. The song, as well as the album, reached number one in five different countries, number two in the United Kingdom, and the top ten in many other countries throughout the world. But Matthew Wilkening still found it worthy to reach 58th place of the 100 Worst Songs Ever list.

23. #68: The song "Hold My Hand", was parodied by Sesame Street, and was about crossing the street. But the song "Hold My Hand" was so overplayed that it soon became an irritation to many. Who sang "Hold My Hand"?

From Quiz Top of the Bottom 4

Answer: Hootie and the Blowfish

Hootie and the Blowfish released "Hold My Hand" in 1994. The song reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100. The song can be found on the album "Cracked Rear View".

24. #78: "Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree" made it to the 78th spot on the countdown. It was originally sung by which group?

From Quiz Top of the Bottom 3

Answer: Tony Orlando and Dawn

"Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree" is a song that was sung by Dawn, also known as Tony Orlando and Dawn, or Dawn Featuring Tony Orlando. It was originally released by the band in 1973, and has been remade several times by many different artists.

25. #88: "Thong Song" placed 88 on the 100 Worst Songs Ever list. Not surprisingly, the song is about thongs. Who sings "Thong Song"?

From Quiz Top of the Bottom 2

Answer: Sisqo

Sisqo was born as Mark Andrews on November 9, 1978. He is known for being the lead singer of Dru Hill. Solo, however, he released an album in 1999 called "Unleash the Dragon", which contains the "Thong Song".

26. #98: It might have been a huge hit in Germany, but in America it made 98th place in the 100 Worst Songs Ever on AOL Radio. Again, repetition seems to make a song simply annoying, rather than good. The song was "Looking for Freedom". Who sang it?

From Quiz Top of the Bottom 1

Answer: David Hasselhoff

"Looking for Freedom" was released on Hasselhoff's 1989 album "Looking for Freedom". It was originally released in 1978, however, in Germany with Marc Seaberg. Though the song is very uplifting, it made it to AOL Radio's 100 Worst Songs Ever.

27. They had us all doing the "Macarena" - but who were guilty party.

From Quiz Jukebox Jury

Answer: Los Del Rio

Los Del Rio brought us this dance craze tune in 1996. Now it just drives us cRaZy! The "Macarena" features in the "Worst 100" at #37.

28. The song "Barbie Girl" was deemed bad enough to make the top 10 on the list. Claus, Soren, Rene and Lene were better known as who?

From Quiz The Worst Pop Records Ever!

Answer: Aqua

Before disbanding in 2001, Aqua achieved three UK number ones, including the now mocked "Barbie Girl".

29. Who had a "Bad Day" that lasted for five weeks at the top of the Hot 100 in the spring of 2006 and ended up with a place on our list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time"?

From Quiz The Bottom 40: America's Worst Number Ones? Part 4

Answer: Daniel Powter

Born in Canada but later a resident of Los Angeles, Daniel Powter caught a couple of breaks with "Bad Day". First of all it was released in Europe and was used by a cola company in an advertisement. It topped the charts in Germany and Italy and made number two in the UK. Then, in the USA, the fifth season of "American Idol" picked it as a theme for the "goodbye video" of departing contestants. Things got even better for Powter (!) when Alvin and The Chipmunks took a cover to number 67 on the Hot 100.

30. What do we have here? A song that topped the charts in the USA twice, but one of those versions was included among "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time". What song did Michael Bolton and Percy Sledge have in common?

From Quiz The Bottom 40: America's Worst Number Ones? Part 3

Answer: When A Man Loves A Woman

"When a man loves a woman Can't keep his mind on nothin' else He'd trade the world For a good thing he's found..." To be clear, it was Bolton's 1991 version that raised the hackles of our list compilers. The Percy Sledge original was the first song recorded at the now-famed Muscle Shoals recording studios in Alabama to top the Hot 100. Sledge claimed to have co-written the song with bandmates Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright and gave them writing sole royalties. As a note, his account of involvement is debated. The song became a staple of wedding bands down through the years. In their obituary of Sledge in 2015, the "LA Times" noted that couples embraced it "...even such rock stars as Steven Van Zandt, guitarist with Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, who brought Sledge in to sing it at his 1982 wedding." Even though it appears on our 'worst' list, Bolton's cover won a Grammy in 1991.
