Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For four weeks at the end of 2000 and start of 2001 "How You Remind Me" was top of the Billboard Hot 100. It also earned a place on a list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time". Who sang it?

Answer: Nickleback

"How You Remind Me" spent four weeks at the top of the Hot 100. It was the Canadian outfit's only Billboard number one.

Now, to say that Nickelback were not everyone's cup of coffee is an understatement. Jimmy Carter was once famously described as "the Charlie Brown of presidents". On the "Jimmy Kimmel" show, Barack Obama had to read a tweet declaring himself "the Nickelback of presidents".

Chad Kroeger, the lead singer, wrote "How You Remind Me", which was to be covered by Avril Lavigne, to whom he was married for two years.
2. It's every aspiring singer's dream to have a number one with their first release. Which "American Idol" contestant did not get top spot there, but got top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with "This Is The Night" - and a place on our list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time"?

Answer: Clay Aiken

Clay Aiken was runner-up in Season Two of "American Idol" and became the second 'AI' star (after Kelly Clarkson) to record a solo number one. In doing that, he got a little bit back on Reuben Studdard who won Season Two but could only hit number two on the charts.

(As a footnote, five "American Idol" contestants topped the Hot 100 between 2002 and 2015.)

Aiken's number one was certified platinum, the other number ones were certified gold, and it was number one with a bullet.

Aiken had a number four with "The Way" in the same year, 2003, but his singing career seemed to go off the boil thereafter. It is a good job he was able to keep busy with theatre work and politics.
3. There can surely be no doubts about the inclusion of "You're Beautiful" on "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time". Who sang it?

Answer: James Blunt

I doubt if there are any insults about the song that James Blunt has not heard.

It topped the Hot 100 for a week in 2006. "Rolling Stone" magazine dubbed it "one of the ten most annoying songs of all time."

Blunt served as a captain in the British Army in Kosovo and claims to have kept a guitar strapped to his tank. He also claims to have co-written "You're Beautiful" with Sacha Skarbek and Amanda Ghost in two minutes. I'll pause for a second to let that sink in. I know what you're thinking..."It took three of them?"

In January 2020, Blunt told the "Guardian" newspaper: "I had no idea the song would be such a big hit, and it scared me at first. I thought I'd just be a musician putting out music. The song [released in 2004] became so ubiquitous that it started to irritate people, but I'm still proud of it and I love my job. I sang it at Elton John and David Furnish's civil ceremony and I'm about to start my sixth world tour. Without 'You're Beautiful', it'd be a tour of north London."

The song topped the Hot 100 for one week in 2006. It was also a chart topper in the UK and nine other territories.
4. Who had a "Bad Day" that lasted for five weeks at the top of the Hot 100 in the spring of 2006 and ended up with a place on our list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time"?

Answer: Daniel Powter

Born in Canada but later a resident of Los Angeles, Daniel Powter caught a couple of breaks with "Bad Day".

First of all it was released in Europe and was used by a cola company in an advertisement. It topped the charts in Germany and Italy and made number two in the UK.

Then, in the USA, the fifth season of "American Idol" picked it as a theme for the "goodbye video" of departing contestants.

Things got even better for Powter (!) when Alvin and The Chipmunks took a cover to number 67 on the Hot 100.
5. It is just a pity that someone who overcame poor early performances to win Season Five of "American Idol" and then had a number one on the Hot 100 with "Do I Make You Proud?" should then see it on the list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time". Who was the singer?

Answer: Taylor Hicks

In the show that culminated in 2006, Hicks struggled early on. He was older than other contestants and his performances were criticised.

Still, he persevered to win, and the tone of "Do I Make You Proud?" reflects that.

And if he was worried about a place on our list, at least Hicks can say that he was the first "AI" winner to be parodied by Weird Al Yankovic.
6. With four songs on our list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time", 2006 was quite a year. Which Fergie number also topped the Hot 100 for three weeks?

Answer: London Bridge

"London Bridge" was the first solo hit for Fergie after leaving the Black Eyed Peas.

In the album version of the song, Fergie repeatedly uses a word totally unsuitable for quoting on a family-friendly quiz site. In fact, it is there 32 times. It neatly summed up this quiz author's opinion of the song on just one hearing.

Fergie had two other number ones on the Hot 100, "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Glamorous" (with Ludacris) - both in 2007. She had 11 songs in all on the Hot 100.
7. You may have heard the saying 'the whole is greater than the sum of the parts', well MIMS proved that wrong when he sampled four songs for a Hot 100 topper that earned a place on the list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time". Which of these was it?

Answer: This Is Why I'm Hot

"This Is Why I'm Hot" sampled "Jesus Walks" by Kanye West, "Nuthin' But A G Thang" by Dr. Dre, "Shook Ones" by Mobb Deep and "Tell Me When to Go" by E-40.

All that led to 13 writing credits on the single. The song spent two weeks at the top of the charts in 2007.
8. It had one note, used one word 168 times, and had three beats for the entire song, yet still topped the Billboard Charts. Who sang "Boom Boom Pow" and got a place on the list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time"?

Answer: The Black Eyed Peas

In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine in 2010, will i. am said: "It has one note. It says 'Boom' 168 times. The structure has three beats in one song. It's not lyrics - it's audio patterns, structure, architecture."

It was the band's first US number one and also topped the charts in the UK in 2009.
9. Who took "We R Who We R" to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 2010 and earned a place among "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time"?

Answer: Ke$ha

Yet another song that owes a lot to the art of the auto tune technician.

Ke$ha had three number ones among 22 entries on the Hot 100. The other two were "Timber" in collaboration with Pitbull and "TiK ToK".

Can you tell I'm losing interest in the dross of 21st Century songs as this quiz goes on?
10. For two weeks in 2012, "Sexy and I Know It" was top of the Billboard Hot 100. It also charted on "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time". Behind which texting abbreviation did the culprits hide?

Answer: LMFAO

This was the second US chart topper for the duo following "Party Rock Anthem." Eight songs in all made the Hot 100.

The song was the fourth Hot 100 topper to have the word "Sexy" in its title.

I feel it my duty to list the other three:
"Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" by Rod Stewart
"I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred
"SexyBack" by Justin Timberlake.
