Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On a list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time" is a cover of a song that also made little sense first time around. Which disco diva loved to love you, but maybe should have stayed out of "MacArthur Park"?

Answer: Donna Summer

In 1968, Richard Harris took "MacArthur Park" to number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Ten years later Donna Summer went one better. This was one of four number ones for Summer as a solo or duetting artist.

"MacArthur Park" was written by Jimmy Webb, who had a respected list of hits under his belt, including "Up, Up and Away", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", "Wichita Lineman", and "Galveston".

Summer stayed top for three weeks until Neil Diamond and Barbara Streisand came along with "You Don't Bring Me Flowers".
2. On a list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time" is a song that almost inexplicably prompted the answer "yes" from some quarters. Who took "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" to the top of the Billboard Hot 100?

Answer: Rod Stewart

In 1979 "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" was the Billboard US pop number one for four weeks.

Rod Stewart provides something of a conundrum for music lovers. Many of his hits seem a bit on the cheesy side, but he actually is not a bad songwriter.

It is true, though, that Stewart set aside his songwriting pen for many years, picking it up again in 2013 after a break of a quarter of a century.

"Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? was written with Carmine Appice and Duane Hitchings.
3. "The Best That You Can Do" may have been the best of Christopher Cross, but it still merits a place on a date-ordered list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time". Which movie did it come from?

Answer: Arthur

"Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in 1981.

It was also Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. Writing credits go to Cross, Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, and Peter Allen.
4. When you put Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder together, how on earth can it merit a place on a list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time"? Here it is, though: what duet puts them there?

Answer: Ebony and Ivory

"Ebony and Ivory" was at the top of the Hot 100 for seven weeks in 1982.

"Baby Grand" was a duet between Billy Joel and Ray Charles. "Body and Soul" featured Tony Bennett and Amy Winehouse.

As a bit of a red herring, "Get It" was a duet between Paul McCartney and Carl Perkins.
5. Soaring onto a list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time" is "We Built This City". Surprisingly, the lyrics were co-written by Bernie Taupin. Which composer had he worked with to supply some of the best pop songs ever?

Answer: Elton John

Starship took "We Built This City" to the top of the Hot 100 for two weeks in 1985.

The songwriters were Bernie Taupin, Martin Page, Dennis Lambert, and Peter Wolf.

There is not enough room here to discuss Taupin's collaborations with Sir Elton John, suffice to say they came up with one of the best-selling songs of all time, the 1997 reworking of "Candle In The Wind" devoted to the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. That topped the US Hot 100 for 14 weeks, and became the best-selling single in "Billboard" history.
6. In a list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time", 1985 supplied two entries. Who took "Broken Wings" to the top of the Hot 100?

Answer: Mr. Mister

Formed in Phoenix, Arizona, Mr. Mister were a band that became based in Los Angeles.

They had two number ones in 1985, "Broken Wings" - a Grammy nominee - and "Kyrie".

"Broken Wings" came immediately after "We Built This City" at the top of the Hot 100, where it stayed for two weeks.
7. Who earned a place in a list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time" with "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car"?

Answer: Billy Ocean

This song is so awful I couldn't spend any time trying to think up a quirky question.

Moving on, "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car" topped the Hot 100 for two weeks in 1988. It was one of three chart-toppers for Billy Ocean in the 1980s.
8. When the world is falling to pieces and all appears lost, Bobby McFerran had some good advice. Sadly it got him a place on a list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time". What was it?

Answer: Don't Worry, Be Happy

Personally I think all four answers look like happy musical thoughts.

Unfortunately, though, there were plenty of things to worry about in 1988 when "Don't Worry, Be Happy" topped the Hot 100 for two weeks. It was his only Billboard top 40.
9. Wouldn't it be nice if one of the best bands of the 20th century were only known for great songs? God only knows how they got around to "Kokomo" and earned a place in a list of "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time". Do you have good vibrations to tell me who they were?

Answer: The Beach Boys

"Aruba, Jamaica, oh I want to take ya
Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego, baby why don't we go, Jamaica..."

"Kokomo" - off the Florida Keys, apparently - was number one on the Hot 100 for a week in 1988.

This was one of four Hot 100 toppers for the Beach Boys.

Incidentally, if you are a fan of The Beach Boys, and happen to visit Glasgow or Belfast, be wary of humming or whistling "Sloop John B." That tune was used by supporters of the ultra-loyal Rangers Football Club to write "The Famine is Over" aka "The Famine Song", an anti-Irish number popular with some Scottish football fans and Ulster Loyalists.
10. On our look at "The 40 Worst Number One Singles Of All Time" are a US boy band who wanted to show they had street credibility. Who were "Hanging Tough" in 1989?

Answer: New Kids On The Block

"Hanging Tough" was a Billboard number one for one week.

The Dorchester, Massachusetts, combo had three Hot 100 number ones between 1986 and 2019. "Hanging Tough" was also a number one in the UK.
