Baby in Songs Trivia Questions

1. Jan and Dean were a popular duo of the late 1950s and early 1960s. What was the name of their hit song that fits the category?

From Quiz
So What? I'm a "Baby"

Answer: Baby Talk

Jan and Dean had a number of hits in the late 1950s and were popular all the way through the mid 1960s until Jan Berry had a serious car accident in 1966 and was left with a brain injury. The good news is that after a long recovery and rehab, the duo actually were able to sing together again in the early 1970s. This song was one of their first hits, reaching number ten on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1959. Other Jan and Dean hits included "Surf City", "Dead Man's Curve", and "Little Old Lady From Pasadena".

2. In the song 'Here Comes My Baby', what time was it?

From Quiz 1960s 'Baby' songs

Answer: Midnight

'In the midnight moonlight I'll - be walking along that lonely mile' - sung by the Tremeloes in 1967.

3. Singer Lynsey de Paul was an extremely successful English singer-songwriter. Which sad ballad made her the first woman to win an Ivor Novello Award?

From Quiz 'Me and My Baby'

Answer: Won't Somebody Dance With Me

"Please, won't somebody dance with me, Start up a romance with me, Just someone to care, Someone so rare, for a dance with me". Happily, near the end of the song a male voice asked "May I Have The Pleasure Of This Dance?". On the record this was the voice of DJ Ed Stewart, and Tony Blackburn voiced the gallant request when Lynsey de Paul appeared on 'Top of the Pops'. She received a second Ivor Novello award for her song 'No, Honestly'. Lynsey de Paul has had an interesting personal life; significant others include Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, Roy Wood (hirsute lead singer of The Move), tough-guy actor James Coburn, legendary footballer George Best, erstwhile 007 Sean Connery, Princess Diana's ill-fated friend Dodi Fayed, theatre producer Bill Kenwright, songwriter Bernie Taupin, record producer Chas Chandler and diminutive sex-symbol Dudley Moore. Still active, in 2009 she was re-elected as President of the PRS (Performing Right Society) for Music. All the wrong answers were also Lynsey de Paul songs.

4. The Turtles had this hit in the mid 1960s which made the Top 20 and fits this category. What song was it?

From Quiz So What? I'm a "Baby"

Answer: You Baby

"You Baby" was a number 20 hit on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 charts for The Turtles in 1966. It was off an album of the same name. It followed the 1965 successes of "It Ain't Me Babe", and "Let Me Be". The group would eventually hit the top of the charts in 1967 with the classic "Happy Together".

5. Who sang 'Cry Baby'?

From Quiz 1960s 'Baby' songs

Answer: Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters

6. The interesting lyrics "He starts to shake and cough, Just like the old man in That book by Nabakov" are part of which song plea?

From Quiz 'Me and My Baby'

Answer: Don't Stand So Close To Me

'That book by Nabokov' is 'Lolita', about an elderly man (memorably named Humbert Humbert) who becomes obsessed with a 12-year old girl. In the Police song, the singer is a "Young teacher, the subject Of schoolgirl fantasy" (something the lead singer, Sting, presumably knew something about, as he was a schoolteacher for two years) who is harassed by a girl with a crush on him in class, leading him to sing the title. The song also implies that the teacher has feelings back, leading to "Strong words in the staffroom"..and possibly a prison sentence... The publishing of 'Lolita' was very controversial, and Groucho Marx famously joked "I've put off reading 'Lolita' for six years, till she's 18."

7. The Supremes had this top rated hit in the mid 1960s that set a record of sorts for the group. Which 'baby' song is this?

From Quiz So What? I'm a "Baby"

The song is considered the group's most successful single, staying on top of the charts for four weeks in the fall that year. It is listed in Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Songs Of All Time" at number 324.

9. The Foundations were a popular band from the U.K. in the late 1960s. They had a song that was not expected to be a hit, but fooled everyone. Remembering the topic of the quiz, what song was this?

From Quiz So What? I'm a "Baby"

Answer: Baby Now That I've Found You

This song was missed by most disk jockeys at first, since when it was released originally, in 1967, it went nowhere on the charts. Then it started to get airplay on a new radio station in the U.K. called Radio 1. The song then took off, and became a number one hit in the U.K., as well as a number 11 Billboard Hot 100 hit in the U.S.

10. Who sang 'Baby, I Love You'?

From Quiz 1960s 'Baby' songs

Answer: Andy Kim

11. Two acts made this 'baby' song a hit. First there were The Ronettes, then later, Andy Kim. What song was able to stand the test of time?

From Quiz So What? I'm a "Baby"

Answer: Baby I Love You

This song was a Jeff Barry/Ellie Greenwich composition, along with an assist from Phil Spector. The song was a number 24 Billboard Hot 100 hit in 1963 for The Ronettes. Although credited to them, it actually had an All-Star cast, with piano by Leon Russell, and back-up vocals by Darlene Love, and Cher. In 1969, Canadian born Andy Kim covered the song and it became a number nine hit on the same Billboard charts. The song earned him a Canadian Juno Award, as "Top Male Vocalist" that year.

12. What song is this line from - 'I never had a mother, I hardly knew my dad. I've been in town for 18 years and you're the only boy I've had'?

From Quiz 1960s 'Baby' songs

Answer: 'Baby Don't Go'

From 1965 - Sonny and Cher

13. Not many songs contain references to 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' in the lyrics, so what song do these lines come from? "Wherever you find him, you'll find me, just look, Closer than a miser or the bloodhounds to Liza"

From Quiz 'Me and My Baby'

Answer: Me and My Shadow

There are lots of interesting things that are 'close' in this song, like "smog when it clings to L.A." or "Bobby is to J.F.K.", but the image of poor Liza (actually Eliza), chased by bloodhounds across the Ohio river with her child in her arms, is certainly vivid. The story in the book was apparently inspired by a true story. The song has been covered by many artists and was featured in the film 'Time Bandits'.

14. This Four Seasons tune was a major hit for the group in 1965. It was later covered by The Bay City Rollers. Name It.

17. Way back, way way back, Rosie and The Originals had a hit with this 'baby' tune. Can you remember that far back?

From Quiz So What? I'm a "Baby"

Answer: Angel Baby

"Angel Baby", considered "doo-wop", was recorded in 1960 by 15 year old Rosie Hamlin. When she could not get the song released, she took the cut to a music store and played it over the sound system of the store. That got her noticed, and eventually the song was released and made it to number five on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in December of that year.

18. Who sang 'Baby I Need Your Lovin'?

From Quiz 1960s 'Baby' songs

Answer: Johnny Rivers

19. With the same title (although punctuated differently) as a U2 song on their 'Zooropa' album, what is the title of the song whose lyrics insist that "there's not another who can take your place"?

From Quiz 'Me and My Baby'

Answer: Baby Face

U2 did 'Babyface', this is 'Baby Face' and dates from 1926. It has been mostly recorded by Jazz artists such as Brenda Lee, but it was improbably recorded by Little Richard in 1958, and he got to number 12 on the US R&B chart with it.

20. This song never technically charted on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, since it was a b-side of a more popular tune which was a number one. It was however, a much played recording on all the airwaves in 1967. This Beatles tune is called...?

From Quiz So What? I'm a "Baby"

Answer: Baby You're A Rich Man

Written, of course, by Lennon/McCartney, this was the b-side to "All You Need Is Love" which was a number one song for the group in 1967. Since most singles by The Beatles were released as two sided hits during that time, this song technically qualifies as a number one hit as well, although it is not listed as such. It does have the distinction of being one of the few songs to appear on two different LPs. It shows up on both the "Magical Mystery Tour" and "Yellow Submarine" albums.

21. Finish this song title by Dion - '______, Baby'

From Quiz 1960s 'Baby' songs

Answer: Ruby

22. The Equals, a U.K. based group, put together this song in the late 1960s that had a reggae feel to it. Again, remembering the topic of the quiz, what song was this?

From Quiz So What? I'm a "Baby"

Answer: Baby Come Back

"Baby Come Back" was a 1966 recording for The Equals, which didn't get much play in the U.K. when originally released. It did do very well in Germany and The Netherlands, when re-released in 1968. It was then noticed by the U.K music lovers and became a number one song there. It was a Top 40 hit in the U.S. as well, reaching as high as number 32. The group never had any other major hits, but the lead singer went on to have some success in the 70s. His name? Eddy Grant ("Electric Avenue").

From Quiz So What? I'm a "Baby"

Answer: Baby It's You

The Shirelles scored with this tune which was co-written by Burt Bacharach in 1961. The song was a major hit for the group, going as high as number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The Beatles actually covered this song in 1963, but never released it as a single, only as an album cut. The most popular version of the song became that of the group Smith, who recorded it in 1969 and had a number five hit with it. Their version had a much harder edge, and was their biggest hit.

Answer: Baby Hold On

"Baby Hold On" was a 1970 release by the Rob Grill led group who, during the late 1960s and early 1970s were turning out singles at a rate of five to six per year, so its logical that some would do better than others. This song was a number 35 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. They had scored just a few months earlier in late 1969 with "Heaven Knows" and later in 1970 would come up with a hit called "Temptation Eyes".

29. Eddie Money scored a major hit in 1977 with his first release. What's the name of this 'baby' tune?

From Quiz So What? I'm a "Baby"

Answer: Baby Hold On

"Baby Hold On" was from the 1977 album simply titled 'Eddie Money'. It produced not only this Billboard Hot 100 number 11 charting tune, but also produced Money's "Two Tickets To Paradise". Money was actually sued over the lyrics of "Baby Hold On" because of the phrase "whatever will be, will be". The writers of the song "Que Sera, Sera" sued, claiming he plagiarized the phrase, and it is said that damages were paid.
