Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jan and Dean were a popular duo of the late 1950s and early 1960s. What was the name of their hit song that fits the category?

Answer: Baby Talk

Jan and Dean had a number of hits in the late 1950s and were popular all the way through the mid 1960s until Jan Berry had a serious car accident in 1966 and was left with a brain injury. The good news is that after a long recovery and rehab, the duo actually were able to sing together again in the early 1970s.

This song was one of their first hits, reaching number ten on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1959. Other Jan and Dean hits included "Surf City", "Dead Man's Curve", and "Little Old Lady From Pasadena".
2. The Turtles had this hit in the mid 1960s which made the Top 20 and fits this category. What song was it?

Answer: You Baby

"You Baby" was a number 20 hit on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 charts for The Turtles in 1966. It was off an album of the same name. It followed the 1965 successes of "It Ain't Me Babe", and "Let Me Be". The group would eventually hit the top of the charts in 1967 with the classic "Happy Together".
3. The Supremes had this top rated hit in the mid 1960s that set a record of sorts for the group. Which 'baby' song is this?

Answer: Baby Love

"Baby Love" hit the number one spot on the U.S. Billboard charts in 1964, and was the second of five straight number one hits for The Supremes, the most successful group in the history of Motown Records. The song is considered the group's most successful single, staying on top of the charts for four weeks in the fall that year.

It is listed in Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Songs Of All Time" at number 324.
4. The Foundations were a popular band from the U.K. in the late 1960s. They had a song that was not expected to be a hit, but fooled everyone. Remembering the topic of the quiz, what song was this?

Answer: Baby Now That I've Found You

This song was missed by most disk jockeys at first, since when it was released originally, in 1967, it went nowhere on the charts. Then it started to get airplay on a new radio station in the U.K. called Radio 1. The song then took off, and became a number one hit in the U.K., as well as a number 11 Billboard Hot 100 hit in the U.S.
5. Two acts made this 'baby' song a hit. First there were The Ronettes, then later, Andy Kim. What song was able to stand the test of time?

Answer: Baby I Love You

This song was a Jeff Barry/Ellie Greenwich composition, along with an assist from Phil Spector. The song was a number 24 Billboard Hot 100 hit in 1963 for The Ronettes. Although credited to them, it actually had an All-Star cast, with piano by Leon Russell, and back-up vocals by Darlene Love, and Cher.

In 1969, Canadian born Andy Kim covered the song and it became a number nine hit on the same Billboard charts. The song earned him a Canadian Juno Award, as "Top Male Vocalist" that year.
6. This Four Seasons tune was a major hit for the group in 1965. It was later covered by The Bay City Rollers. Name It.

Answer: Bye Bye Baby (Baby Goodbye)

The song was written by group member Bob Gaudio along with their producer, Bob Crewe. The song made it up to number 12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1965. The cover by The Bay City Rollers was a major hit in the U.K., reaching number one and remaining there for six weeks in 1975, and reaching number one in Australia as well.
7. Way back, way way back, Rosie and The Originals had a hit with this 'baby' tune. Can you remember that far back?

Answer: Angel Baby

"Angel Baby", considered "doo-wop", was recorded in 1960 by 15 year old Rosie Hamlin. When she could not get the song released, she took the cut to a music store and played it over the sound system of the store. That got her noticed, and eventually the song was released and made it to number five on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in December of that year.
8. This song never technically charted on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, since it was a b-side of a more popular tune which was a number one. It was however, a much played recording on all the airwaves in 1967. This Beatles tune is called...?

Answer: Baby You're A Rich Man

Written, of course, by Lennon/McCartney, this was the b-side to "All You Need Is Love" which was a number one song for the group in 1967. Since most singles by The Beatles were released as two sided hits during that time, this song technically qualifies as a number one hit as well, although it is not listed as such.

It does have the distinction of being one of the few songs to appear on two different LPs. It shows up on both the "Magical Mystery Tour" and "Yellow Submarine" albums.
9. The Equals, a U.K. based group, put together this song in the late 1960s that had a reggae feel to it. Again, remembering the topic of the quiz, what song was this?

Answer: Baby Come Back

"Baby Come Back" was a 1966 recording for The Equals, which didn't get much play in the U.K. when originally released. It did do very well in Germany and The Netherlands, when re-released in 1968. It was then noticed by the U.K music lovers and became a number one song there.

It was a Top 40 hit in the U.S. as well, reaching as high as number 32. The group never had any other major hits, but the lead singer went on to have some success in the 70s. His name? Eddy Grant ("Electric Avenue").
10. This song preceded "I Got You Babe" for Sonny and Cher. What was this 'baby' song?

Answer: Baby Don't Go

"Baby Don't Go" was released in early 1965 for the duo, and made it to number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the U.S. It also earned honors as a number one song in Canada, and number 11 in the U.K.
11. Another song that stood the test of time, was recorded first in the early 1960s by The Shirelles, and then covered, with a different arrangement, by Smith in 1969. Name the song.

Answer: Baby It's You

The Shirelles scored with this tune which was co-written by Burt Bacharach in 1961. The song was a major hit for the group, going as high as number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The Beatles actually covered this song in 1963, but never released it as a single, only as an album cut.

The most popular version of the song became that of the group Smith, who recorded it in 1969 and had a number five hit with it. Their version had a much harder edge, and was their biggest hit.
12. Glenn Yarbrough, a popular folk singer, recorded this entry in 1965. It was the title song from a motion picture. Name it.

Answer: Baby The Rain Must Fall

Yarbrough was the lead singer of the easy listening group called The Limelighters, and had been recording since the mid 1950s. "Baby The Rain Must Fall" was his biggest success, first singing the song on the soundtrack of the movie with the same name, and then re-recording it for release as a single in 1965. The song was a number 12 Billboard Hot 100 charting hit.
13. One more song in this category that did well as both an original and a cover, it first surfaced as a cut from The Four Tops in the early 1960s, and then later in the decade, Johnny Rivers took the song onto the charts again. Which was this popular tune?

Answer: Baby I Need Your Loving

The Four Tops used this song as their first release on Motown Records in 1964 and it became their first Top 20 hit as well, reaching as high as number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and becoming their first of many million selling records for the group. Rivers took the song in 1967, and shot up to number three on the same Billboard charts with his version.

The Four Tops version is listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time" at number 390.
14. This song was a relatively minor hit for The Grass Roots in 1970, but nevertheless fits the category and received lots of airplay. Name the song please.

Answer: Baby Hold On

"Baby Hold On" was a 1970 release by the Rob Grill led group who, during the late 1960s and early 1970s were turning out singles at a rate of five to six per year, so its logical that some would do better than others. This song was a number 35 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

They had scored just a few months earlier in late 1969 with "Heaven Knows" and later in 1970 would come up with a hit called "Temptation Eyes".
15. Eddie Money scored a major hit in 1977 with his first release. What's the name of this 'baby' tune?

Answer: Baby Hold On

"Baby Hold On" was from the 1977 album simply titled 'Eddie Money'. It produced not only this Billboard Hot 100 number 11 charting tune, but also produced Money's "Two Tickets To Paradise". Money was actually sued over the lyrics of "Baby Hold On" because of the phrase "whatever will be, will be".

The writers of the song "Que Sera, Sera" sued, claiming he plagiarized the phrase, and it is said that damages were paid.
16. Country crossover artist Mac Davis both wrote and recorded this smash hit which fits the topic. What 1972 hit was this?

Answer: Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me

In 1972 this crossover tune made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 charts and became a number one tune. Davis had previously written "In The Ghetto" which was turned into a hit by Elvis Presley. Davis, during the peak of his career, also had his own television show and appeared in several movies.
17. Badfinger was a popular U.K. group from the early 1970s who were successful both in England and the U.S. What 'baby' song did they put onto the charts?

Answer: Baby Blue

"Baby Blue" was a 1971 release on Apple Records for the group, part of their album called "Straight Up". Written by lead singer Pete Ham, and produced by Todd Rundgren, the song was the group's last major hit, peaking at number 14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1972. Ironically, due to some disorganization in Apple Records at the time, the song was never released as a single in the U.K.
18. Peter Frampton had this song on his debut album in 1975. He later released a live version. What was the song called?

Answer: Baby I Love Your Way

19. Player was the name of the group. 1978 was the year. What was the name of the song?

Answer: Baby Come Back

Although they were named Billboard Magazine's "Best New Singles Artists" of 1978, and were invited to open for Eric Clapton, they couldn't maintain their success and they disbanded by 1982.
20. James Ingram and Patti Austin recorded this duet in 1981, but it wasn't until 1983 that it became a major hit. What 'baby' song is the final entry in this quiz?

Answer: Baby Come To Me

This song was recorded in 1981 by Patti Austin and James Ingram in 1981 and appeared on her 1982 album called "Every Home Should Have One". The song had background vocals by Michael McDonald, and was produced by Quincy Jones. Even with all that the song had trouble gaining traction when it was first released in 1982.

Then, after being used in the television soap opera "General Hospital", it was re-released and became a Billboard Hot 100 number one hit in 1983.
