Question 9 of 10
9. I'm sure that British singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading isn't really an egomaniac, but this title from 1980 almost makes her sound like one. What song, both a single and album title, is this? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. For the final song, this is about as tasteless as it gets. A parody of the 'Teenage Tragedy Song' so popular in the 50s-70s (Like 'Tell Laura I Love Her', 'Teen Angel' or 'Seasons in the Sun') this song by Jimmy Cross culminates in his getting into the coffin with his deceased sweetheart. The title, please? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "When the night has come, And the land is dark, And the moon is the only light we'll see", who should you stand by?

Answer: Me

This is the opening of 'Stand by Me', originally written and sung by Ben E. King, born Benjamin Earl Nelson, and a lead singer with The Drifters before going solo as Ben E. King in 1960. The song has been much covered, including a version in 1963 by Cassius Clay, before he changed his name to Muhammad Ali.

The song was chosen by the Recording Industry Association of America as one of the Songs of the Century and by 'Rolling Stone' magazine as one of the 500 best songs of all time. It was also the title soundtrack of the film, 'Stand by Me', that was made from the Stephen King novella, 'The Body'.
2. Singer Lynsey de Paul was an extremely successful English singer-songwriter. Which sad ballad made her the first woman to win an Ivor Novello Award?

Answer: Won't Somebody Dance With Me

"Please, won't somebody dance with me, Start up a romance with me, Just someone to care, Someone so rare, for a dance with me". Happily, near the end of the song a male voice asked "May I Have The Pleasure Of This Dance?". On the record this was the voice of DJ Ed Stewart, and Tony Blackburn voiced the gallant request when Lynsey de Paul appeared on 'Top of the Pops'.

She received a second Ivor Novello award for her song 'No, Honestly'. Lynsey de Paul has had an interesting personal life; significant others include Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, Roy Wood (hirsute lead singer of The Move), tough-guy actor James Coburn, legendary footballer George Best, erstwhile 007 Sean Connery, Princess Diana's ill-fated friend Dodi Fayed, theatre producer Bill Kenwright, songwriter Bernie Taupin, record producer Chas Chandler and diminutive sex-symbol Dudley Moore. Still active, in 2009 she was re-elected as President of the PRS (Performing Right Society) for Music. All the wrong answers were also Lynsey de Paul songs.
3. The interesting lyrics "He starts to shake and cough, Just like the old man in That book by Nabakov" are part of which song plea?

Answer: Don't Stand So Close To Me

'That book by Nabokov' is 'Lolita', about an elderly man (memorably named Humbert Humbert) who becomes obsessed with a 12-year old girl. In the Police song, the singer is a "Young teacher, the subject Of schoolgirl fantasy" (something the lead singer, Sting, presumably knew something about, as he was a schoolteacher for two years) who is harassed by a girl with a crush on him in class, leading him to sing the title. The song also implies that the teacher has feelings back, leading to "Strong words in the staffroom"..and possibly a prison sentence...
The publishing of 'Lolita' was very controversial, and Groucho Marx famously joked "I've put off reading 'Lolita' for six years, till she's 18."
4. The group only appeared on 'Top of the Pops' because Sparks, who were supposed to be singing "This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both of Us" were discovered at the last moment not to have British work permits. Dressed in white suits and 'trademark' white flat caps, their song, sung in a distinctive falsetto (by a singer who was never in the group!), shot to number one in the British charts in May 1974 (incidentally relegating Sparks to number two!) Which song was this?

Answer: Sugar Baby Love

The Rubettes, formed by session musicians, were unlikely stars in the Glam Rock era, but are still touring in 2009. 'Sugar Baby Love' was their only British number one, and it also made the US Top Forty. The singer on the record was Paul da Vinci (born Paul Prewer)) who was never actually part of the group.
5. The lady in this song has a solicitous family - "My mother will start to worry", "My father will be pacing the floor", "My sister will be suspicious", "My brother will be there at the door" and "My maiden aunt's mind is vicious". What does the gentleman continue to insist?

Answer: Baby, It's Cold Outside

This song, written by Frank Loesser as a duet for him and his wife, is popular at Christmas. It was once performed on 'The Muppet Show' by the unlikely duet of Miss Piggy and Rudolf Nureyev, with Miss Piggy playing 'The Wolf' (traditionally the male) and Nureyev, clad in a towel, singing 'The Mouse' (traditionally the female) in a steam room, with Nureyev finally crashing through the wall to escape!
6. Not many songs contain references to 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' in the lyrics, so what song do these lines come from? "Wherever you find him, you'll find me, just look, Closer than a miser or the bloodhounds to Liza"

Answer: Me and My Shadow

There are lots of interesting things that are 'close' in this song, like "smog when it clings to L.A." or "Bobby is to J.F.K.", but the image of poor Liza (actually Eliza), chased by bloodhounds across the Ohio river with her child in her arms, is certainly vivid.

The story in the book was apparently inspired by a true story. The song has been covered by many artists and was featured in the film 'Time Bandits'.
7. The person singing this song is certainly confident as she declares that Liz Taylor, Lana Turner and Liberace(!) are no threats to her relationship. What is this song, known as Nina Simone's signature tune?

Answer: My Baby Just Cares for Me

Written in 1928 for the Eddie Cantor film, 'Whoopee', this song includes the lyrics "Liz Taylor is not his style, And even Lana Turner's smile (or even, in a later verse "Liberace's smile") Is somethin' he can't see". It also featured in the Woody Allen film 'Everyone Says I Love You'.
8. With the same title (although punctuated differently) as a U2 song on their 'Zooropa' album, what is the title of the song whose lyrics insist that "there's not another who can take your place"?

Answer: Baby Face

U2 did 'Babyface', this is 'Baby Face' and dates from 1926. It has been mostly recorded by Jazz artists such as Brenda Lee, but it was improbably recorded by Little Richard in 1958, and he got to number 12 on the US R&B chart with it.
9. I'm sure that British singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading isn't really an egomaniac, but this title from 1980 almost makes her sound like one. What song, both a single and album title, is this?

Answer: Me, Myself, I

The album 'Me, Myself, I' was Joan Armatrading's highest entry in both the US and UK charts, and the single reached 21 in the UK charts. It's actually not an egotistical song, more about someone being happy in their own skin

"Don't want to be the bad guy
Don't want to make a soul cry
It's not that I love myself
I just don't want company
Except
Me
Myself
I"

Answer: I Want My Baby Back

In this supremely tasteless song, the singer and his girlfriend were returning from a Beatles concert when they ran into 'The Leader of the Pack'. "Well, when I come to I looked around, And there was the leader, And there was the pack, And over there was my baby. And over there was my baby. And waaay over there was my baby!" I won't go on. All the wrong answers are also parodies of the 'Teenage Tragedy' genre. I hope that you've enjoyed this musical tour with 'Me and My Baby'.
