The song was on the 1968 album "Music from Big Pink". The song peaked at number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 21 on the UK Singles chart. According to Robbie Robertson, who wrote most the lyrics, the song was influenced by surreal Spanish filmmaker Luis Bunuel. Levon Helm, a member of The Band, mentioned that some of the characters in the song are based on real people. There really was a "Crazy Chester"! "New Rose" is a seminal song from the Damned. "Turn, Turn, Turn" is by the Byrds. "Like a Rolling Stone" is by Bob Dylan and the number one song on Rolling Stone's list.

3. Number 31: 1970s. This is one of Led Zeppelin's most popular songs, and it starts off slowly with the lyrics "There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold". Name this seminal Led Zeppelin song.

From Quiz Rolling Stone All-Time 500 List Numbers 31-40

Answer: Stairway to Heaven

This song seemed to constantly top most "classic rock" radio stations all-time lists. If you ever get a chance, see Heart's version of this song to honor "Zep" at the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington D.C. several years ago, good stuff! "Big Log" was a solo work by Robert Plant. The song was on the 1971 album "Led Zeppelin IV".

4. Number 21: 1970s, "Born To Run". Name the New Jersey artist who wrote and sang this song.

From Quiz Rolling Stone's All-Time 500 Numbers 21-30

Answer: Bruce Springsteen

The song is off the album by the same name released in 1975. The song reached number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. During 1975, Springsteen was featured on the covers of both "Newsweek" and "Time" magazines the same week. At one time, there was a movement to make "Born to Run" the state song of New Jersey. As for Bob Dylan, he's the only one on the list not from New Jersey. He's from Minnesota.

From Quiz VH1's Greatest Songs of the 1980s

Answer: Who Made Who

"Who Made Who" is the soundtrack to the Stephen King movie "Maximum Overdrive". The album features three new songs: "Who Made Who" and two instrumentals, "D.T." and "Chase the Ace". The song placed Number One on VH1's greatest AC/DC songs of all time. AC/DC re-released the song internationally as a single in 1986 in support of the "Who Made Who" album. There are two main videos for "You Shook Me All Night Long", one made in 1980, the other in 1986.

6. The most popular version of the song "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" is the one released in 1960 by The Shirelles. In 1962, a legendary heavy metal singer recorded the song with his band The Prophets. Which singer was it?

From Quiz Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs (101-125)

Answer: Ronnie James Dio

The Shirelles version of the song was an instant hit which reached number one in the US on Billboard's Hot 100. The song was written by the songwriting team of Goffin and King, the hit makers responsible for many number one singles for Motown. This song was the first number one hit for a black, all girl group. One of Ronnie James Dio's earliest bands was Ronnie Dio and the Prophets. Their line-up lasted for approximately five years which saw them release several singles and one full length LP. One of the singles was "Will You Love Me Tomorrow". After Dio's involvement with The Prophets, he wend on to metal god status as the vocalist for Rainbow and Black Sabbath, as well as an extremely successful solo career.

7. One of the most striking sounds in the song "Eight Miles High" by The Byrds is the opening guitar sound created by Roger McGuinn. Which statement below is true concerning this unique guitar sound?

From Quiz Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs (126-150)

Answer: The guitar sound was heavily influenced by the sound of John Coltrane's saxophone.

Although all of these scenarios may have been plausible, it was the fact that McGuinn was emulating the sound of Coltrane's saxophone. In fact, McGuinn was intrigued by the song "India" which Coltrane released on his album "Impressions". "Eight Miles High" was very controversial when it was released based on its title alone. Fact is, the song was written about flying in an airplane to London and their experiences with their quick climb to stardom. Of course, realizing the era in which the song was released, and realizing that David Crosby was a founding member of the group, some of that controversy may not have been unfounded.

8. The song "Loser", was released in 1993 on Beck's debut album titled "Mellow Gold". The line "I'm a driver, I'm the winner; things are gonna change I can feel it" appears in the song. The line was taken from a movie. Can you name it?

From Quiz Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs (176-200)

Answer: Kill the Moonlight

All of these movies have one thing in common. They were all written by, directed or somehow utilized Steve Hanft. Hanft is a good friend of Beck's so the line from the movie "Kill the Moonlight" was featured in the song. In response, Hanft directed the video for "Loser".

9. "Hoochie Coochie Man" is one of Muddy Waters' better known songs. Do you know who was on bass guitar when he recorded the tune for Chess Records way back in 1954?

From Quiz Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs (201-225)

Answer: Willie Dixon

No, it wasn't Robert Johnson, he had already passed away in 1938. It was the song's writer on bass guitar, none other than Willie Dixon. Dixon won a Grammy Award in 1988 for Best Traditional Blues album for "Hidden Charms".

10. The Young Rascals took their version of the song "Good Lovin'" to the top of the Billboard Pop Singles chart in the USA during their chart run way back in 1966. Who originally recorded the song?

From Quiz Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs (301-325)

Answer: The Olympics

The Olympics released "Good Lovin'" on the Loma record label, but the song didn't take off like it did for The Young Rascals when they released it on Atlantic Records. The song spent 14 weeks riding the charts where it eventually wound up number one.

11. The song at number 350 is "The Loco-Motion" by Little Eva. Which statement about Little Eva is TRUE?

From Quiz Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs (326-350)

Answer: Little Eva was a baby sitter for Carole King and Gerry Goffin.

The true statement is that Little Eva was a babysitter for the songwriting team of King/Goffin. King was inspired to write the song after watching Little Eva dance around the house. Little Eva was born in Bellhaven, North Caroline, not Chicago. Little Eva never performed with The Supremes. Little Eva's name was Narcissus, not Athena.

12. Kicking things off at number 400 on our list is the song "Kicks". The song was released in March of 1966 on Columbia. Which band was responsible for this number four hit?

From Quiz Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs (376-400)

Answer: Paul Revere and the Raiders

The band was from the northwest US city of Portland, Oregon. The band had four huge years from 1966-1969 where only The Bealtes and The Rolling Stones outsold them in singles and had better radio airplay. The song was the band's public service announcement against drug use.

13. At number 475 on our list is the hit song "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys. Which album was the song released on?

From Quiz Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs (451-475)

Answer: Ill Communication

The album came out in May of 1994 and found immediate success among the MTV generation. One of the great contributions from this album is the song "Get it Together" featuring Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest.

14. The song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was a huge hit that was largely inspired by the song at number 500. Think of the opening riff heard in the Nirvana song and see if it makes you think of another famous song by the band Boston?

From Quiz Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs (476-500)

Answer: More Than a Feeling

The song is "More Than a Feeling" from the self titled debut release from Boston. Kurt Cobain was inspired by the opening riff while listening to the song on the radio. The four chord riff is nearly exactly the same in both songs, the difference is that Tom Scholz from Boston overdubbed nearly twenty guitar harmonies on top of another in the studio while Cobain's stripped down version is a little more raw in sound. The Boston song peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100.

15. Number 59: The "protest" song that is next on the list is called "The Times They Are A-Changin'". It was written and first recorded by an American folk/rock legend. Name the artist who released this song in 1964.

From Quiz Rolling Stones' All-Time 500 Songs Numbers 60-51

Answer: Bob Dylan

The song was released on the album of the same name in January 1964, and about a year later, in March 1965, as a single. in the USA. It was released as a single in the UK in 1964 and made it to number nine on the British Singles' chart. In December 1965, the American group The Byrds did a cover version of the song that eventually reached number one on the Billboard 100 singles' chart.

16. Number 42: 1960s. "Waterloo Sunset". Which English band, fronted by the Davies brothers, performed this song?

From Quiz Rolling Stones All-Time 500 Songs Numbers 41-50

Answer: The Kinks

The single was released in 1967 off the "Something Else by the Kinks" album. This Kinks song was called "possibly the most beautiful song of the rock and roll era" by "Allmusic" senior editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine. It is up there amongst my favorite Kink's songs. Ray Davies did a memorable performance of the song at the closing ceremonies of the London Olympics in 2012.

17. Number 32: 1960s, "Sympathy for the Devil". Which UK group recorded this song?

From Quiz Rolling Stone All-Time 500 List Numbers 31-40

Answer: The Rolling Stones

The song was on the 1968 album "Beggars Banquet". It was written by Mick Jagger, though credited to Jagger and Keith Richards. The song was controversial, to say the least, but Jagger, over the years, has constantly denied it has to do with devil worship.

18. Number 12: From the 1960s, "A Change Is Gonna Come". Which artist wrote and sang this song?

From Quiz Rolling Stones Top 500 Songs Numbers11-20

Answer: Sam Cooke

Cooke was better known for light-hearted songs such as "You Send Me" until he felt it was time to address racism in America. He mentioned Bob Dylan's song "Blowin' in the Wind" was an inspiration. Though not much commercial success, the song became an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement in the USA in the 1960s. Sadly, Cooke never saw the how this song influenced millions as he was killed on December 11, 1964 at a hotel in Los Angeles under what some think as mysterious circumstances.

19. Number nine: 1990s, "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Which group recorded this song?

From Quiz Rolling Stones Top 10 Rock Songs All-Time

Answer: Nirvana

The song was released in 1991 off the album "Nevermind". The name of the song had an interesting start. A friend had spray-painted "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit" on a wall. Later, Cobain learned it was the name of a brand of female under-arm deodorant in the USA.

20. Song 9: One of the biggest songs of the 1970s became one of the biggest songs of the 1980s after what band covered the Aerosmith song "Walk This Way"?

From Quiz VH1's Greatest Songs of the 1980s

Answer: Run-DMC

Run-DMC were recording their 1986 album "Raising Hell" with producer Rick Rubin (who also produced The Beastie Boys' album "License to Ill" that same year) when Rubin introduced them to the Aerosmith album "Toys in the Attic". Although Run and DMC did not want to do the cover, it was Jam Master Jay who suggested covering the track. Rubin, who was also working with Aerosmith on an upcoming studio album in 1987 (though ultimately the sessions with Rubin never got beyond some rough studio jams), contacted Aerosmith, and Aeromsith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry guested on the Run-DMC recording. The song revitalized Aerosmith's career, as they had largely been out of the lime light the last several years battling addictions and their 1985 album "Done With Mirrors" sold poorly. The track also helped break Run-DMC into the mainstream. The song is also credited for breaking rap into the mainstream, and was ranked Number Four on "VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop". Both groups won "Soul Train Music Award for Best Rap - Single" for 1987. Rolling Stone ranked the original recording as Number 336 on their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. They ranked the Run-DMC higher, at 287.

21. Creedence Clearwater Revival cracks the top 100 with their great song "Fortunate Son". Which album from CCR featured this song?

From Quiz Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs (76-100)

Answer: Willy and the Poor Boys

This is absolutely one of the best Vietnam War protest songs ever written. The song is an intentional slap in the face to the privileged elite who would not have to serve in the armed forces based on their families wealth and power. The song was said to have been written when Julie Nixon (daughter of President Richard Nixon) and David Eisenhower (grandson of President Dwight Eisenhower) were to be married. This song crosses over to more recent generations where the children of the privileged have skirted their military obligations.

22. One of The Everly Brother's most successful singles was "Cathy's Clown". Released in 1960, this song was their first release on the Warner Bros. label after their three year run on Cadence. Which statement below is true about this song?

From Quiz Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs (126-150)

Answer: This song was the first time that a single was number one on the Pop Singles chart in both the US and the UK.

It was bound to happen. At some point the stars and planets would have to align and the same song would top the charts in both the US and UK simultaneously. Well, the Everly Brothers did just that with their hit "Cathy's Clown", arguably their best song of all time. Unfortunately for the duo, this would also be their last number one hit in either country.

23. In at number 174 is "Paint It, Black" by The Rolling Stones. From which album was this song released in the US?

From Quiz Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs (151-175)

Answer: Aftermath

It is important to note that this song appeared on the US release of the album as it did not appear on the UK version. The song was released as a single in the UK after the album was released. This album was the first Rolling Stones' release recorded wholly in the US, at RCA Studios in Hollywood, CA. The song was a number one hit on the UK Singles chart and the US Billboard Hot 100.

24. This classic funk tune was the first number one hit for George Clinton and his band Parliament on the US Billboard Black Singles chart. Do you remember this 1977 release?

From Quiz Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs (176-200)

Answer: Flash Light

This song was originally recorded for a Bootsy Collins solo release, but Collins didn't particularly like the way the track sounded. Parliament keyboard player Bernie Worrell had been experimenting with sounds on his Moog synthesizer and he came up with a stacked bass tone that he really liked. When "Flash Light" was handed over to George Clinton, Worrell decided this would be the song he used his new bass sound on, creating an instant classic. The song was from one of the best named albums ever: "Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome".

25. The song "Chain of Fools" has an instantly recognizable guitar intro. Who played it?

From Quiz Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs (226-250)
