Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Number 11: "My Generation" from the 1960s. Which British group did this song?

Answer: The Who

"My Generation" is off the album of the same name released in 1965. This song was written by Pete Townsend. The song reached number two on the UK Singles chart, but only number 74 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S.

Roger Daltrey's stuttering style in the song has spawned many a theory as to why, but it added to the youthful bravado of the song that made it a popular teen anthem.
2. Number 12: From the 1960s, "A Change Is Gonna Come". Which artist wrote and sang this song?

Answer: Sam Cooke

Cooke was better known for light-hearted songs such as "You Send Me" until he felt it was time to address racism in America. He mentioned Bob Dylan's song "Blowin' in the Wind" was an inspiration.

Though not much commercial success, the song became an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement in the USA in the 1960s. Sadly, Cooke never saw the how this song influenced millions as he was killed on December 11, 1964 at a hotel in Los Angeles under what some think as mysterious circumstances.
3. Number 13: 1960S, "Yesterday". Which fab group did this song?

Answer: The Beatles

"Yesterday" was written and sung by Paul McCartney on the "Help" album released in 1965. The song was a number one hit in the USA on the Billboard Hot 100, but not originally released as a single in the UK. It hit number eight on the UK Singles chart in 1976 when it was formally released on Parlaphone records. It has been covered by over 2,000 artists over the years.
4. Number 14: 1960s, "Blowin' in the Wind". Name the artist who wrote and sang this song.

Answer: Bob Dylan

The song is off the 1963 album "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan". It has been covered by hundreds of artists from Chet Atkins to Bruce Springsteen, but ironically three weeks after Dylan released his album, the folk trio Peter, Paul, and Mary released it as a single and took it to number two on the Billboard Hot 100.

They had been given permission by Dylan's manager. Dylan did get royalties for being the songwriter.
5. Number 15: 1970s, "London Calling". Which group from the UK performed the song at number 15?

Answer: The Clash

The song was off the album of the same name in 1979 in the UK and 1980 in the US. The song was written by Joe Strummer and Mick Jones. The song's title alludes to the "BBC World Service" identification words during World War II, "This is London calling..." A socially conscious song, some lyrics referred to concerns of Strummer. Examples, the words "Nuclear error" were a concern of what had happened at Three-Mile Island, Pennsylvania, USA in 1979. Also, "We ain't got no swing, except for the ring of that truncheon thing" was referring to police brutality.
6. Number 16. The Beatles released this massive hit in 1963. Sample lyrics to help: "And when I touch you I feel happy inside It's such a feeling that my love I can't hide, I can't hide, I can't hide" Name this Beatles song.

Answer: I Want to Hold Your Hand

Even though this song sold a million copies its first week, it couldn't replace "She Loves You" at number one on the UK Singles chart. It did eventually spend five weeks at the top of those charts as well as seven weeks at number one in the USA in 1964 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Interestingly, the Beatles lost out on the Grammy for Record of the Year to Getz and Gilberto's "The Girl From Ipanema".
7. Number 17: 1960s, "Purple Haze". Name the artists who performed this psychedelic hit.

Answer: The Jimi Hendrix Experience

The song is off the album "Are You Experienced" released in 1967. The song was recorded in London, England and peaked at number three on the UK Single's chart. It only reached number 65 in the USA on the Billboard Hot 100. This guitar monster song was played with an effects pedal called the "Octavia", created by an acoustic engineer who claimed Hendrix helped him with the creation.
8. Number 18: 1950s, "Maybellene". Which legendary Rock and Roller sang this song?

Answer: Chuck Berry

This song was released as a single only in 1955. The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1988 for its influence. Its influence was noted by Rolling Stone magazine with the words "rock & roll guitar starts here". The song sold one million copies by the end of 1955.
9. Number 19: 1950s, "Hound Dog". Name the artist who did this song, thank you very much.

Answer: Elvis Presley

The song was released as a single in July, 1956. It was written by legendary songwriters Leiber and Stoller. It was originally recorded by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton in 1952. Presley's version was simultaneously number one on the pop, country, and R&B charts, and spent an amazing 11 consecutive weeks at number one on the US pop charts, a record until Boyz II Men's "End of the Road" spent 13 weeks in a row at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1992.
10. Number 20: This Beatle tune was released in May , 1970. It featured these memorable opening lyrics, "When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me, Speaking words of wisdom, ____________". Fill in the blank to name this tune.
