Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Number 31: 1970s. This is one of Led Zeppelin's most popular songs, and it starts off slowly with the lyrics "There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold". Name this seminal Led Zeppelin song.

Answer: Stairway to Heaven

This song seemed to constantly top most "classic rock" radio stations all-time lists. If you ever get a chance, see Heart's version of this song to honor "Zep" at the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington D.C. several years ago, good stuff! "Big Log" was a solo work by Robert Plant.

The song was on the 1971 album "Led Zeppelin IV".
2. Number 32: 1960s, "Sympathy for the Devil". Which UK group recorded this song?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

The song was on the 1968 album "Beggars Banquet". It was written by Mick Jagger, though credited to Jagger and Keith Richards. The song was controversial, to say the least, but Jagger, over the years, has constantly denied it has to do with devil worship.
3. Number 33: 1960s, "River Deep, Mountain High". Which male and female duo first recorded this song? Hint, the female singer regained fame in 1984 with a number one hit and her iconic legs. Name this soulful duo.

Answer: Ike and Tina Turner

The song was released in 1966 and was a big hit in Europe, peaking at number three on the UK singles chart, but was not an initial success in the USA. It was written by Phil Spector, Jeff Barry, and Ellie Greenwich, and produced by Spector. It has been covered by many artists over the years, my favorite being the version by The Four Tops and the Supremes.

Jay-Z and Beyoncé were not born in 1966, and I don't know if Dionne Warwick and James Brown ever did a duet, but that would have been interesting!
4. Number 34: 1960s. You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling". Who first recorded this song?

Answer: The Righteous Brothers

The song is off the album of the same name which was released in December 1964. A lofty ranking was given to the song in 1999 by BMI: it had more television and radio play than any other song in the 20th century in the USA.
5. Number 35: 1960s. "Light My Fire". Which Los Angeles group first recorded this song?

Answer: The Doors

The song was released in 1967 off the Doors' debut album named "The Doors". The song hit number one in the USA on the Billboard Hot 100, but only number 49 on the UK Singles chart. Interestingly, Jose Feliciano won a Grammy for his vocal performance of this song in 1969.
6. Number 36: 1990s. "One". Which Irish group performed this song off the "Achtung Baby" album?

Answer: U2

The song was released in 1991. It was a number one hit in the USA on the Billboard charts and number seven in the UK. In 2003 "Q" magazine named it the greatest song of all-time.
7. Number 37: 1970s. "No Woman, No Cry". Which Reggae legend performed this song with his group the Wailers?

Answer: Bob Marley

The song was first released in 1974 on the "Natty Dread" album, but the popular 1975 live version was the one chosen for Marley's greatest hits album "Legend". The song used the Jamaican term "nuh" for the "no cry" part. Nuh means "don't", so the song was really saying to the woman in the slums not to cry, because everything will be alright.
8. Number 38, 1960s. This Rolling Stones' song includes the lyrics, "War, children it's just a shot away, it's just a shot away" Name this Stones' classic.

Answer: Gimme Shelter

It is off the 1969 album "Let It Bleed". According to Jagger, the song was inspired by what was happening in the turbulent years of the late 1960s, including the Vietnam War. Interestingly, the song was spelled "Gimmie Shelter" on the album, but since has used "Gimme" as the spelling, including the Stones' documentary film of their Altamont Speedway concert in California.

The female vocal was done by Merry Clayton.
9. Number 39: 1950s. "That'll Be the Day". With his group the Crickets, who wrote and sang this song?

Answer: Buddy Holly

It was released from the 1957 album "The 'Chirping' Crickets". It was co-written by Jerry Allison. Although Norman Petty is given credit for co-writing the song, he actually didn't. He did produce the single though. The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.
10. Number 40: 1960s. "Dancing in the Streets". What R&B artist and her group first recorded this song?

Answer: Martha and the Vandellas

The song was on the 1964 album "Dance Party". One of the trio of writers was Marvin Gaye. It peaked at number two in the USA and number four in the UK. The David Bowie/Mick Jagger version hit number one in the UK in 1985.

Martha Reeves did the lead vocals on the song, being supported by the Vandellas Annette Beard and Rosalind Ashford.
