King and Queen Mix Trivia Questions

1. Which unforgettable king was responsible for separating the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church?

From Quiz
The King is Gone But Not Forgot

Answer: Henry VIII

Henry VIII, the second Tudor king, reigned as King of England from 21 April 1509 until his death in 1547. His six marriages have been emblazoned on the pages of history. His separation from the Roman Catholic Church came about because of his personal disputes with the pope and even though he was excommunicated from the church he still believed the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church. Henry VIII was responsible for starting the English Reformation.

2. How many English kings *died* in the year 1066?

From Quiz How Well do You Know Your English Monarchy?

Answer: 2

In January 1066, Edward the Confessor (reigning from 1042) died, leaving rather a muddle in his wake. Who was going to be king? He had allegedly appointed two before he died (William of Normandy and Harold Godwinson), and a third, Harald Hardrada, was seeking to also claim the throne. Godwinson was crowned king; he defeated Hardrada (who was never king) at the Battle of Stamford Bridge but he was later killed by William the Conquerer at the Battle of Hastings. Edward the Confessor was the first king of England to die in 1066, Harold Godwinson was the second.

3. Who was the chosen heir for King Henry I?

From Quiz People Who Should Have Been King/Queen

Answer: Matilda

Henry's only legitimate son died on The White Ship leaving his only other legitimate child, Matilda, as his heir. He persuaded the barons to accept her but upon his death most of them reneged on their promise. She eventually accepted Stephen as king but on the written guarantee that her son would be the king's heir superseding King Stephen's legitimate children.

4. William I grew very fat and was thrown from his horse in Mantes, France while sacking the town. He died of abdominal injuries in a church in Rouen on 9th September 1085. Where is he buried?

From Quiz Where are British Kings and Queens Buried?

Answer: Caen, Normandy

He was buried in the abbey he founded in Caen, the Abbaye aux Hommes. While he was being buried his bloated body exploded causing a huge stench, so they had to hurry the burial along a bit. All that remains of William in his tomb is a solitary thigh bone as the rest of his bones were scattered by Huguenots in the 16th century.

5. Which Saxon king was nicknamed 'the Unready'?

From Quiz Kings and Queens of England 832-1216

Answer: Aethelred

Aethelred was the longest reigning Anglo-Saxon king (978-1013 and again, 1014-1016, a total of about 37 years). The nickname 'Unready' means 'without advice' or 'ill advised' and thus refers to those around him rather than the king himself. However, the first written record of the nickname dates from about 1180, so it may not be very informative.

6. This King ruled from 1272-1307.

From Quiz Which King Reigned Then?

Answer: Edward I

Edward I got the nicknames 'Longshanks' and 'Hammer of the Scots' - the first for his unusual height for the time, and the second his defeat of the Scottish bids for freedom from English rule.

7. This Queen was the first of her kind in England - because she was meant to be left the throne in her own right. Things didn't work out her way though, and her cousin Stephen took the crown from her.

From Quiz British Queens Regnant

Answer: Matilda

Matilda put up a good fight for the crown - in 1139 she and her husband landed in the south west of England to try and reclaim her crown. It worked. She was elected Queen at Winchester on 8th April 1139. This success was short lived, though; Stephen and his army soon defeated her and he took the crown.

8. Who reigned in 1050?

From Quiz British Monarchs in Years Ending in 50

Answer: Edward the Confessor

Edward the Confessor reigned from 1042-1066, and his death resulted in the tussle for the throne which resulted in the Battle of Hastings between Harold II and William of Normandy, later William I, after he won. He enlarged and re-endowed Westminster Abbey. The word 'Confessor' in this context refers to his firm religious convictions and NOT to going to confession.

9. Who reigned in 1100?

From Quiz British Monarchs in Years Ending in 00

Answer: William II and Henry I

William II reigned 1087-1100 and was shot in the New Forest, and Henry I reigned 1100-1135 and died of eating 'a surfeit of lampreys'! (A lamprey is a kind of eel).

10. What year did William I become King of England?

From Quiz Kings and Queens of Britain

Answer: 1066

William ruled from 1066-1087, after which his son, also called William, succeeded him. He invaded and won the famous Battle of Hastings and was crowned at Westminster on Christmas Day, 1066.

11. It's the King's prerogative to have mistresses, yes? It's all just malicious gossip, it's never actually been proven that she's my half-sister.

From Quiz Jerry Springer: English Royals Edition

Answer: George I

When he came to England to claim the throne, George brought two high-profile mistresses with him. One was apparently extremely fat, and the other very thin. The fat one, Sophia Charlotte von Kilmansegge, was reliably reputed to be the illegitimate child of George's father, Ernest Augustus, by Clara Elizabeth Meisenberg. Under the circumstances, it was perhaps better that the liaison between George and Sophia created no children. The thin mistress was Ermengarde Melusina von Schulenburg, with whom George had two, or possibly even three, daughters. In light of all this, it is somewhat ironic that George had his wife, Princess Sophia Dorothea of Zelle, imprisoned for adultery.

12. To whom was Henry V married?

From Quiz The Kings and Queens of England

Answer: Catherine de Valois

Catherine was the daughter of Charles VI of France. Henry married Catherine in order to seal the Treaty of Troyes, a Treaty which made him the heir to the French throne.

13. Henry VII was responsible for bringing what to England?

From Quiz Kings & Queens

Answer: The Renaissance

14. Edward VI, son of Henry VIII, ruled the country for only 6 years. He was nine years old when he was crowned king and died at the tender age of 15. How did he die?

From Quiz Kings and Queens III

Answer: he died of a lung disease

15. What was the name of the wife of Edward III?

From Quiz Kings and Queens II

Answer: Philippa

Actually, Edward III had quite a few problems concerning his wife's behaviour. Philippa once borrowed money from Germany and promised the crown jewels as a guarantee. Poor Edward had to pay 30000 packs of wool to get them back!

16. Who was the wife of Henry VI of England?

From Quiz British Kings and Queens and Everything in Between

Answer: Margaret of Anjou

Margaret of Anjou was a formidable woman and ambitious queen who after seeing her husband Henry VI of England deposed as King, imprisoned and then clandestinely murdered on orders from Edward IV, would ride with the Lancastrian army plotting to win the crown back for her son Edward of Lancaster, Prince of Wales until he too was murdered.

17. Who is the first English king to carry the title "the Great"?

From Quiz Nicknames of English Monarchs

Answer: Alfred

Some sources say Alfred is the only one to carry this title, while others call Canute "the Great" also. Either way, Alfred, who ruled from 871 to 900 AD, was assuredly the first. Alfred became known as the "Father of the English Navy" as a result of the fleet of ships he constructed to help in defending England from invasion.

19. Who was the first English sovereign to go from England to France without travelling across the English Channel?

From Quiz Kings and Queens of England from 1066

Answer: Elizabeth II

20. Who were the Kings of England in 1100?

24. The first Norman king of England was known as William the Conqueroer but he is also remembered by another name. What is that name?

From Quiz The King is Gone But Not Forgot

Answer: William the Bastard

William I was the first Norman king of England. He was only referred to as William the Bastard by sources that were not pro-Norman. He served as Duke of Normandy before he became king. His ancestors were the Viking raiders. William's reign was quite stormy. He was an illegitimate child and this caused problems for him after the death of his father. Nevertheless he was able to establish his authority. It is sometimes said that by establishing a strong centralized government for England William laid the framework for the country's future greatness, although not all sources agree with this viewpoint.

25. Elizabeth I had a disease during her early years as queen that gave her permanent facial scarring. Which disease was it?

From Quiz How Well do You Know Your English Monarchy?

Answer: Smallpox

Elizabeth I suffered from smallpox aged 29 and, afterwards, covered her face up with lead-based make-up to hide the scars. She was lucky: most people didn't survive from smallpox during Tudor times.

26. Who named Lady Jane Grey as heir to King Edward VI?

From Quiz People Who Should Have Been King/Queen

Answer: John Dudley Duke of Northumberland

Henry VIII has revised the succession as follows: 1st The Prince of Wales, 2nd Lady Mary, 3rd Lady Elizabeth, 4th Descendants of Princess Mary Duchess of Suffolk succeeding those of his eldest sister Princess Margaret Queen of Scotland. In an attempt to prevent the Lady Mary from inheriting the throne and reviving Roman Catholicism in England John Dudley Duke of Northumberland and Lord Protector had the king alter the succession. As the king was not of age and deathly ill this device to alter the succession could be termed "coerced". Northumberland married his son Guilford Dudley to Lady Jane Grey granddaughter to Mary Duchess of Suffolk. When Edward VI died Queen Jane and reigned for all of nine days. Soon people rallied to Queen Mary I's banner thus ending this brief reign.

27. William II, son of William the Conqueror, and known as Rufus, was killed mysteriously by an arrow in 1100 while hunting in the New Forest. Where was he hurriedly buried?
