Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Queen was the first of her kind in England - because she was meant to be left the throne in her own right. Things didn't work out her way though, and her cousin Stephen took the crown from her.

Answer: Matilda

Matilda put up a good fight for the crown - in 1139 she and her husband landed in the south west of England to try and reclaim her crown. It worked. She was elected Queen at Winchester on 8th April 1139. This success was short lived, though; Stephen and his army soon defeated her and he took the crown.
2. This queen was the Protestant daughter of James II. Parliament didn't want a Roman Catholic ruler so it replaced her father with her and her foreign husband.

Answer: Mary II

After Mary came to the thone jointly with her husband, William of Orange, they accepted the English Declaration of Rights, later enacted by Parliament as the Bill of Rights, which stated among other things, 'It hath been found ... that it is inconsistent with the safety and welfare of this protestant kingdom to be governed by a papist prince'.

In 1701 the Act of Settlement stipulated that no Roman Catholic could succeed to the throne. This was extended to Scotland by the Acts of Union. This law remains in force.
