The first player to achieve this was Bob Pettit (1959) while the second was Bill Russell, who won his second MVP in 1961. Wilt Chamberlain won the second of his four MVPs in 1966, while Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won his second in 1972. The 1980s was a popular decade for multiple MVP winners, with Moses Malone (1982), Larry Bird (1985) and Magic Johnson (1989) each winning their second MVP in that decade. Michael Jordan won his second MVP in 1991, while Karl Malone won his second in 1999. Tim Duncan was the first man in the 21st century to achieve the honour (2003) while Steve Nash won back-to-back MVPs in 2005 and 2006. James' minutes increased greatly in the 2009-10 season as did his production. He averaged 29.7 points per game, 7.3 rebounds per game and 8.6 assists per game while shooting at 50%. However, James struggled to make an impact in that year's NFL playoffs, losing in the second round to the Boston Celtics. That off-season, James joined the Miami Heat for what would become the most successful spell in his career.

He achieved his first career triple-double on 17 January 2011 and that season saw Rose become only the third player since 1972 to record 2,000 points and 600 assists in a single NBA season. (Alongside LeBron James and Michael Jordan) The Bulls also performed well, registering an NBA-best 62-20 record. The team was eventually eliminated by LeBron James and the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals, losing the series in five games.

In the 1984-85 season, they went to the finals again, but lost to the Lakers. McHale was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999.

The Heat also retained their NBA Championship from the 2011-12 season, defeating the San Antonio Spurs in seven games. He won NBA Finals MVP for a second straight year.

He averaged 32 points per game, 7.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game. Despite his superb play in the regular season, Durant struggled to take this form to the 2014 postseason. This was most apparent in Game 4 of the first round series against the Memphis Grizzlies, in which Durant scored with just 24% of his field goals. After falling behind 3-2, The Oklahoman referred to Durant as "Mr. Unreliable". If the newspaper was trying to get a reaction out of the MVP, it certainly worked as Durant scored 36 points in a Game 6 victory. Oklahoma eventually won the series in seven games but lost to the Spurs in six games in the Western Conference Finals.

Michael Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to NBA championship wins six times and was named MVP in each of those championships.
