9. All college football fanatics know they call Florida State University the Seminoles; however, do you know the name of the Indian who rode out on the horse during pregame festivities?
From Quiz College Mascots
Answer:
Osceola
In 1978, Bill Durham, an FSU alumnus, convinced football coach Bobby Bowden to support the creation of a new school tradition, a depiction of a Seminole warrior astride a horse as a means of increasing school spirit at football games. A horse maked its first appearance as Renegade at an FSU football game on Sept. 16, 1979. The rider of the horse, who depicted an unnamed Seminole warrior, was initially called "Savage Sam" or simply the "Seminole Warrior", until 1979, when Renegade's rider was called Osceola for the first time.
