The Minnesota fans stormed the field following a 6-6 tie, and in the mayhem, Yost left the jug behind. Minnesota found it and their athletic director had it painted brown, and printed, "Michigan Jug - Captured by Oscar, October 31, 1903", on the side along with the score "Michigan 6, Minnesota 6" (Oscar was the custodian who found the jug after the game). When Yost heard about the jug, he sent a letter asking for the jug back. Minnesota told him, that if he wanted it back, he would have to win it back, which he did when the teams met up the next time in 1909.
