The Little Brown jug was Michigan Head Coach Fielding Yost's and he had left it after Michigan won the 1903 game between Michigan and Minnesota. The grounds keeper, Oscar Munson, found the jug and brought it to L. J. Cooke, head of the athletics department. Minnesota kept the jug and painted on its side "Michigan Jug - Captured by Oscar, October 31, 1903," and the score, "Minnesota 6, Michigan 6." Coach Yost sent a letter requesting Minnesota to return his jug; however, Cooke simply wrote back "if you want it, you'll have to win it." Thus, was born the "Little Brown Jug."

For a brief history of the Jug, in 1908, concerned that students from Minnesota would tamper with his water supply, Michigan coach Fielding Yost had his student manager purchase a 5-gallon jug from a local store for $.30. The Minnesota fans stormed the field following a 6-6 tie, and in the mayhem, Yost left the jug behind. Minnesota found it and their athletic director had it painted brown, and printed, "Michigan Jug - Captured by Oscar, October 31, 1903", on the side along with the score "Michigan 6, Minnesota 6" (Oscar was the custodian who found the jug after the game). When Yost heard about the jug, he sent a letter asking for the jug back. Minnesota told him, that if he wanted it back, he would have to win it back, which he did when the teams met up the next time in 1909.
