Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which teams competed in, "The Duel in the Desert," with the winner receiving the Territorial Championship Cup?

Answer: Arizona vs. Arizona State

According to information provided by the Arizona Alumni Association, the cup had been recognized by the NCAA as the oldest traditional rivalry trophy in college football, being first awarded on Thanksgiving Day in 1899.
2. Florida played whom for the Seminole War Canoe?

Answer: Miami

Yes, Florida State is known as the Seminoles, but there is more to Seminole history than Tallahassee. The Seminole War Canoe Trophy is a full-sized, authentic Seminole war canoe, hand-hewn by Seminole craftsmen from a 200 year-old Everglades Cypress. It was donated in 1955 to be the trophy for the Florida vs. Miami game, and according to the University of Miami website, it is the only authentic Seminole war canoe in the world.
3. What had Washington and Washington State played annually for?

Answer: Apple Cup

While Washington is the "Evergreen" state, it is also known for its apples, hence the name of the trophy that was first awarded in 1962. The rivalry dated back to 1900.
4. Who played in "The Rocky Mountain Showdown"?

Answer: Colorado vs. Colorado State

The game was played in Denver near the beginning of each season, with the winner taking home the Centennial Trophy.
5. The Winner of the Iowa vs. Iowa State game took what home with them?

Answer: The Cy-Hawk Trophy

Not only did the trophy feature a football player in the classic running back pose, but also had the similarity of both Cy the Cardinal and Herky the Hawkeye adorn the front of the trophy.
6. The two words of 'Civil War' would depict which two teams?

Answer: Oregon vs. Oregon State

First played in 1894, it was the longest running rivalry on the West Coast. There was a trophy made in 1959 in the shape of a Platypus (an animal that looks like the cross between a beaver and a duck), but it went missing after the 1962 game. Amazingly, it was found in a closet at the University of Oregon in 2005, and there was a movement growing to re-establish the tradition.

The 1983 contest between the two teams produced a scoreless tie. The game was commonly known as the "Toilet Bowl", due to the poor quality of play exhibited in the game (it was not a steadfast defensive struggle). No NCAA Division I football game has ended in a scoreless tie since, and due to the recent introduction of overtime into NCAA football it is a record of futility unlikely to be repeated.
7. The Victory Bell was painted either Cardinal or Blue depending on who won between which two teams?

Answer: USC vs. UCLA

The 295-pound Victory Bell was given to UCLA in 1939, and was stolen by USC in 1941. It remained hidden until 1942, when a picture of it ended up in a USC publication, and set off a series of statue painting, and grass burning. Administration threatened to cancel the game, so the student body presidents decided that the bell would become the trophy for the game.
8. In "The Big Game", Stanford and Cal played for what?

Answer: The Stanford Axe

The Axe originally came from a Baseball Pep rally in 1899, where it was stolen for the first of at least five times.
9. The "Battle for the Golden Egg" took place in which state?

Answer: Mississippi

The official name of the game between Ole Miss and Mississippi State was "The Battle for the Golden Egg." The trophy made in the 1920s, was in the shape of a football, but it is a 1920s football, which was considerably more round than the modern version, so it looks like an egg.
10. New Mexico and New Mexico State faced off in what game?

Answer: The Battle of I-25

They first met on January 1, 1894, in what may have been the first New Year's Day game in history. The winner received the Maloof Trophy.
11. Which rivalry was best summed up by the term, "Wide Right"?

Answer: Florida State vs. Miami

In 1991, Florida State kicker Gerry Thomas missed a field goal to the right with less than a minute remaining, as the top ranked Seminoles lost at home to the second-ranked Hurricanes 17-16.
12. The Fremont Cannon was given to the winner of which game?

Answer: Nevada vs. UNLV

First awarded in 1969 as a way to stimulate interest in the annual game between the northern and southern Nevada Universities, the cannon is considered one of the best and loudest symbols of rivalry in the college football.
13. Which teams competed for the Beehive Boot?

Answer: BYU, Utah, Utah State, and Weber State

The trophy was awarded to the team with the best record against in-state opponents, except if the teams should end the season with identical records against in-state opponents, then a winner is chosen by vote of the in-state media who covered the schools.
14. Which rivals faced off for the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk?

Answer: Illinois vs. Northwestern

This rivalry dated back to 1892, but the Trophy only to 1945. The original trophy was a carved wooden Indian, but was replaced by a replica tomahawk for easier transportation.
15. Which two MAC teams faced off for the Peace Pipe in the "Battle of I-75"?

Answer: Toledo vs. Bowling Green

The two schools were separated by about 25 miles of Interstate 75 in Ohio.
