Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What intense college football bowl rivalry is played between Auburn and Alabama?

Answer: Iron Bowl

What started out as a 32-22 win by Auburn in 1893, in which the attendance was around 2,000, has involved into arguably college football's greatest rivalry. Some people say that in Alabama, the first question they ask you is, "Alabama or Auburn?"
2. Michigan has dominated in getting this trophy in its annual matchup against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. What is the name of the second-oldest trophy in college football history?

Answer: Little Brown Jug

The name was most likely taken from Joseph Winner's 1869 song. Michigan has dominated this series except for a nine game winning streak by the Golden Gophers from 1934 to 1942.
3. In the Bedlam Game, Oklahoma dominated the first 11 matches. For the first eight of those victories, they outscored the other team 240-0. What team does Oklahoma play in the Bedlam Game?

Answer: Oklahoma State

The first matchup between these in-state rivals was played in 1904. Though Oklahoma might have the wins in football, Oklahoma State has historically destroyed the Sooners in their wrestling programs.
4. Pittsburgh and West Virginia play in what game?

Answer: Backyard Brawl

Since 1895, the Backyard Brawl has been a serious game between the two schools who are only 70 miles from each other. Old-timer Mountaineer fans still cringe at the Panthers' 15 game win streak in the series from 1929 to 1946 (games from 1940-42 were canceled).

The Battle of the Palouse is an Idaho-Washington State rivalry, and the Battle of the Brazos is played between Baylor and Texas A&M.
5. Which of these trophies is not handed out in an in-state rivalry?

Answer: Jefferson-Eppes Trophy

Jefferson-Eppes is handed out to the winner of Florida State-Virginia. The Platypus is given to the winner of Oregon and Oregon State's Civil War. The Old Oaken Bucket is Indiana and Purdue.
6. Who plays in the South's oldest rivalry?

Answer: North Carolina and Virginia

Georgia and Auburn play in the deep South's oldest rivalry. UNC and Virginia have played one more than Georgia and Auburn, and 19 more times than UNC and Duke have met. One of the game's more notable viewers was President Calvin Coolidge, who watched the Tar Heels' 1928 24-20 win.
7. The Slab of Bacon and Paul Bunyan's Axe are two trophies that have been handed out to the winner of which fantastic series?

Answer: Wisconsin-Minnesota

Supposedly the Slab of Bacon had been lost from 1948 to 1994. However, when the Slab was found, every game result from 1930 to 1970 was found on the back of this "bacon" that is actually a piece of black cherry wood.
8. It's been called 'Judgment Day'. This game was ranked by ESPN in 2000 as the greatest North American sports rivalry. Which two teams go at it?

Answer: Michigan-Ohio State

Perhaps this rivalry was caused by the brief, non-violent border dispute between the states of Ohio and Michigan back in 1835 and 1836 (known as the Toledo War). Whatever the cause, this is one of America's greatest rivalries, and has decided things such as a Rose Bowl bid, the Big Ten Championship, and several coaches' jobs.

In 2006, they played for the first time as #1 and #2 (Ohio State was #1, Michigan #2). Army-Navy and Notre Dame-USC also have great histories, but North Carolina-Duke is more serious in basketball.
9. In an attempt to become more politically correct, the name of this game was changed from the Border War to the Border Showdown in 2004. What two teams play in this battle?

Answer: Kansas-Missouri

The winner gets the Indian War Drum. Mizzou says that the 1911 game was the world's first homecoming. 2007 was the first time both teams were top-5 ranked; Kansas #2, Missouri #4, which ended up in a Missouri 36-28 victory.
10. This rivalry is the most played in college football history. The first game was played in 1884 and has been played without break since 1897. What two academically-esteemed schools play in it?

Answer: Lehigh and Lafayette

"The Rivalry" is its simple name. Each year, the Lehigh Mountain Hawks and the Lafayette Leopards play in the game. Sports Illustrated wrote, "you must once see in your lifetime".
