Super Bowl 2020s Trivia Questions

1. In the 2023 Season AFC Championship match, the Chiefs scored a touchdown on their first drive which was immediately followed by a TD from Baltimore. A high-scoring game looked likely. What was the final score?

From Quiz
2023 NFL Season Part 4: Super Bowl LVIII

Answer: Chiefs 17-10

The AFC Championship Game was hosted by the Baltimore Ravens for the first time in their franchise history and the first such game not hosted by the Kansas City Chiefs since 2017 as it was also the sixth straight AFC Championship Game appearance for the Chiefs. The Ravens could only punt on their initial drive but the Chiefs got onto the scoreboard straight away with a 'traditional' opening drive TD with a 12-play 81-yard effort as Mahomes passed deep right to Kelce for a 19-yard touchdown. Baltimore responded with a TD of their own (Jackson pass deep right to Flowers for 30 yards) to close out the first quarter. 17-7 at the half. The Chiefs scored a touchdown again on the opening drive of the second quarter and apart from a field goal to close out the second quarter did not score again for the entire match. But it was enough. While the Ravens' defence did not concede another point, the Chiefs' defence rattled the normally smooth workings of Lamar Jackson and his crew. The Ravens managed a field goal late in the final quarter to make it a one-score game. but with 2:34 left on the clock Kansas City held onto the ball for nine plays to close out the match 17-10. It was the fourth AFC Championship by the Chiefs in five years.

The Lincoln Financial Group was opened in 1905 and it is headquartered in Radnor, located just 13 miles from Philadelphia.

4. The AFC top seed Kansas City Chiefs got a scare when what superstar quarterback injured his ankle in the second quarter, causing him to visibly limp?

From Quiz 2022-23 NFL Playoffs: Divisional Round

Answer: Patrick Mahomes

However, Mahomes made the gutsy decision to come back to play in the second half of the game in spite of his coach and medical personnel advising against it. Patrick Mahomes was born in Tyler, Texas in 1995 and he was drafted with the 10th overall pick in the NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017. He led his team to victory in Super Bowl LIV for the 2019-20 season and in the 2022-23 season he set an NFL record for most total yards by a quarterback in a season with 5,608 (5,250 passing and 358 rushing).

5. What Seattle Seahawks quarterback, who took over the starting role after Russell Wilson was traded in the offseason, led the team to a halftime lead against the 49ers in the Wild Card game?

From Quiz 2022-23 NFL Playoffs: NFC Wild Card

He relinquished his starting role after the 2014-15 season and it would be another eight seasons before he was a regular starter again. Smith resurrected his career in 2022-23 as he led the Seahawks to a 9-8 record, was selected to the Pro Bowl, was the only quarterback in the league to take every offensive snap for his team and he led the NFL in completion percentage. In the Divisional Round playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Agnew had three solid kick returns that set up his team in great field position. However, in the fourth quarter, Agnew caught a pass and fumbled inside the 10 yard line with his team down by 10 points that derailed the comeback attempt for the Jaguars.

14. Incredibly two teams fielded their third-string quarterbacks in the Wild Card playoffs, one from each conference. Which teams?

From Quiz 2022-23 NFL Playoffs: The Wild Card Round

The Dolphins and 49ers both had rotten luck with injuries to their quarterbacks. Tua Tagovailoa started the first four games for Miami but was concussed in week 4 calling Teddy Bridgewater into service. He started week 5 but injured his hand calling third-string starter Skylar Thompson to finish the match. Thompson started the next match but was injured himself and Bridgewater was called back into the fray. Tua returned for the next eight matches but got concussed again. Bridgewater started week 17 but did not finish due to injury. Thompson finished the match and was the starter for week 18 and the wild card round. Trey Lance was the preferred QB for the San Francisco 49ers in 2022 but had a season-ending ankle injury in week 2, forcing Jimmy Garoppolo into service. Garoppolo started the next 10 games but received a foot injury against Miami in Week 13 which ruled him out for the season. Brock Purdy was a seventh-round draft pick and was the third-string QB. Purdy was called up, finished off a win against the Dolphins, and then won his next five starts to finish out the season. Cruelly called Mr Irrelevant when called up, the moniker disappeared when he went 5-0 and was named as starting QB for the Wild Card playoffs.

His best season with the Panthers was in 2019-20 when he eclipsed 1,000 yards both rushing and receiving becoming just the third player to do so. Injuries caused McCaffrey to miss most of the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. He played the final 10 games of the 2022-23 season with the 49ers and he immediately made their offense more explosive. In the Wild Card game against the Seahawks, McCaffrey had 119 yards on just 15 carries in addition to his two receptions for 17 yards and a touchdown.

The Bengals, the coin-flip winning team, chose to defer their call to the Rams who opted to receive the ball. The Bengals chose the direction they wanted to kick. From Quiz NFL 2021-22: From Playoffs to the Super Bowl

Answer: A field goal (3 points)

The NFC was remarkably similar. T Lambeau Field the Packers scored a touchdown on their initial drive but did not score again until they scored a field goal in the fourth quarter. The 49ers managed a field goal in the third quarter but were playing catch-up all game. With four minutes to go they scored a touchdown from a blocked Packers' punt to make it 10 a piece. In the 2022-23 regular season, Kelce racked up 1,338 receiving yards and eclipsed 10,000 career receiving yards, both exceptional numbers for a tight end.

20. The second Divisional Round Match in the AFC saw the Cincinnati Bengals at the Buffalo Bills. The home side was expected to win comfortably. What was the final score?

From Quiz All Roads Lead to Super Bowl LVII

The Bengals scored again on their next carry, a ten-play 72-yard effort with Burrow throwing short to Hurst who scored an 18-yard TD which was converted. The Bills punted next play after failing to make a first down again. The Bills did manage to score a converted touchdown on their opening drive of the second quarter but that was as close as they got. Bengals moving on.

The 2022-23 season was Reddick's first as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles and he excelled as a pass rusher with 16 regular season sacks. From Quiz 2022-23 NFL Playoffs: Divisional Round

The 14 receptions set a NFL playoff record for tight ends and was just one short of the overall record of 15 receptions in a playoff game. Setting records was nothing new for Travis Kelce as during the 2022-23 season he set records for the most overall and consecutive 1,000+ receiving yards by a tight end (7) and the most career games with 100+ receiving yards by a tight end (35).

23. In their Wild Card match against the San Francisco 49ers, the Seahawks took a 17-16 lead into the half-time break. How many unanswered points did the 49ers score in the second half to win the match?

From Quiz 2022-23 NFL Playoffs: The Wild Card Round

Answer: 25

The Seahawks scored two converted touchdowns and a field goal in the first half to the 49ers' single TD and three field goals. Rookie 49ers' QB Purdy marched them 85 yards downfield in five plays before passing to McCaffrey for a 3 yards touchdown. In the second half, he passed for two more TDs and rushed one himself. They also scored a two-point conversion and a field goal. Seattle scored an unconverted consolation TD late in the final quarter. The final score was 41-23.

24. What quarterback, the final pick ('Mr. Irrelevant') of the 2022 NFL Draft, threw for 332 passing yards and three touchdowns for the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card game?

From Quiz 2022-23 NFL Playoffs: NFC Wild Card

Answer: Brock Purdy

Brock Purdy was born in 1999 and he played college football at Iowa State before he was drafted by the 49ers. At the start of the season he was third on the depth chart after Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance but injuries to those two players put Purdy in the starting role. He had a sensational first playoff game as well against the Seahawks as he threw touchdown passes to Deebo Samuel, Elijah Mitchell and Christian McCaffrey.

25. Solid and gutsy playcalling helped the Jaguars erase a 27 point deficit to come out on top. What former Super Bowl winning head coach led the Jaguars from the sidelines?

From Quiz 2022-23 NFL Playoffs: AFC Wild Card

Answer: Doug Pederson

The 2022 NFL season was the first one in which Doug Pederson was the head coach of the Jaguars. The team started their first 10 games with a paltry 3-7 record but they finished strong with a final record of 9-8 and a division title. The Jaguars quickly trailed 27-0 in the Wild Card game before they became more aggressive on defense and started executing better on offense. A critical moment in the game came when Doug Pederson made a bold decision to go for a 2-point conversion after a touchdown to cut the deficit to two points. The decision paid off and eventually the Jaguars won the game on a last second field goal. Doug Pederson was previously the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles when they won Super Bowl LII during the 2017 NFL season.

26. The Rams received the ball on the opening drive and started from their 25-yard line. What was the result of that drive?

From Quiz Super Bowl LVI

Answer: Punt

On first-and-10, Akers got the ball for a third time but was stopped just at the line of scrimmage. On second down, Stafford was taken down for the game's first sack by Trey Hendrickson and a loss of seven yards. On third-and-thirteen, Stafford gave the ball to Darrell Henderson, the other Rams' running back, and he was stuffed behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of three. Johnny Hekker then punted the ball away.

27. Which Super Bowl LIV team had the first female coach in Super Bowl history?

From Quiz Super Bowl LIV

Answer: 49ers

Katie Sowers was one of the first handful of women to coach in the NFL, and the first to make it to a Super Bowl. She was also the first openly gay coach to make it to the Super Bowl. San Francisco also had the first Muslim coordinator on their coaching staff, with Robert Saleh. Other Muslim coaches (including Saleh five years prior) had coached in the game, but not as either the Offensive or Defensive coordinator for a team.

28. Who won the NFL Most Valuable Player Award (regular season) for 2023?

From Quiz 2023 NFL Season Part 4: Super Bowl LVIII

Answer: Lamar Jackson

The NFL Most Valuable Player Award is determined by fifty sports writers from the Associated Press. It is considered the de facto NFL Most Valuable Player Award. It covers the regular season but results are not announced publicly until the week before the Super Bowl. In 2023 it was won by Lamar Jackson, quarterback for the Ravens. This was his second MVP win. Starting in the 2023 season, AP voters filled out a ranked MVP ballot of five players. Jackson received 49 first-place votes and one third-place vote. This gave him a total of 493 out of 500 potential points. (In 2019, his first win, it was a unanimous vote). The Associated Press NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award winner for 2023 was Christian McCaffrey (49ers) and Myles Garret (Browns) was the Associated Press NFL Defence Player of the Year.

29. On the second drive of the game for the Chiefs, their usually reliable kicker, Harrison Butker, attempted a 42-yard field goal. What was the result of this field goal attempt?

From Quiz 2022-23 NFL Playoffs: Super Bowl LVII

Answer: Miss, hit left upright

Harrison Butker's first field goal attempt of Super Bowl LVII was a miss from 42 yards that hit the left upright. Kickers hitting one of the uprights is a rare occurrence and sometimes the kicker can still score after hitting the upright. However, Butker's kick doinked off the left upright back into the field of play rather than through the uprights. Butker's miss set up the Philadelphia Eagles in good field position at the 32-yard line.

30. In the first 2022-23 NFC Divisional Round match, the New York Giants had done well to reach this stage but they were up against top seed Philadelphia Eagles. They were a chance of winning. What was the final score?

From Quiz All Roads Lead to Super Bowl LVII

Answer: Eagles 38-7

The Giants 9-3-1, and unlikely Wild Card Round winners thought they were a chance as Eagles (14-3). Eagles QB Jalen Hurts missed two matches with a sprained shoulder and the Eagles went from 12-1 to 12-3. On the Eagles' last regular season match, also against the Giants, the Eagles chose a vanilla offence designed to protect Hurts. The Eagles edged the Giants that match 22-16. Any doubts about Hurts' shoulder dissipated in their first play of the playoff when the Giants scored a 75-yard play with Hurts passing short right to Goedert for 16 yards. That became a procession. They had 28 points and four touchdowns on the scoreboard before halftime. The Giants opened their scoring with a converted touchdown in the third quarter and didn't let the Eagles score that quarter but that was also the end of the Giants' scoring. The Eagles added ten more points in the final quarter to win 38-7.
