Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was Hooterville's telephone operator?

Answer: Sarah

Sarah, not to be confused with Mayberry's Sarah, was Hooterville's switchboard operator. In the first season, Mr. Kimball mentioned that Sarah was his mother, but in later seasons, Sarah is the mother of Roy Trendell, who owns the phone company. Sarah was played by Merie Earle.
2. Who did Betty Jo Bradley marry?

Answer: Steve Elliott

Steve Elliott, played by Mike Minor, originally dated Billie Jo. However, he ended up marrying Betty Jo, reflecting the real life courtship and marriage of Mike Minor and Linda Kaye Henning.
3. What was unusual about Fred Ziffel's son, Arnold?

Answer: He was a pig.

Yes, Arnold Ziffel was a real pig! The childless Ziffels raised Arnold as their son, even sending him to school! Arnold was amazing: among other talents, he could turn the tv on and off, write, deliver messages, and play the piano!
4. Name the Monroe brothers.

Answer: Ralph and Alf

The Monroe brothers were actually not brothers at all: they were brother and sister. Alf was played by Sid Melton and Ralph by Mary Grace Canfield. The Monroe brothers were Hooterville's carpenters, but how they ever got licensed, we'll never know!
5. Who were the engineer and conductor team of the train?

Answer: Charlie Pratt and Floyd Smoot

Engineer Charlie Pratt was played by Lester "Smiley" Burnett, until he died of leukemia in 1967. Floyd Smoot, played by Rufe Davis continued to play his role as conductor, but things just weren't the same without Charlie.
6. What did Betty Jo name her baby?

Answer: Kathy Jo

Twins Barbara and Heather Whiter were the first to play baby Kathy Jo. The role was taken over in 1969 by toddler Elna Hubbell.
7. Who mistook the dog for Betty Jo's baby?

Answer: Granny

In one of several "crossover" episodes, Granny, from "The Beverly Hillbillies" came to Hooterville to help new mother Betty Jo care for the baby. When she took a peek in the carriage at the baby, she got the surprise of her life: the jealous dog had climbed into the carriage and was snuggled up like the baby!
8. What did Lisa Douglas almost always fix for breakfast?

Answer: hotcakes

Lisa not only served hotcakes for breakfast, but usually had them for lunch and dinner, too! She did branch out and try some other recipes after a while, to supplement her "hotscakes," as she called them. Among her other foods: "vaffles," "veatcakes," hot water soup, "hotskabobs," and sauerkraut-ade! Yumm!
9. What was Hank Kimball's job?

Answer: county agent

Clueless county agent Hank Kimball was brilliantly portrayed by Alvy Moore. Mr. Kimball was known for rarely finishing a sentence and severely second-guessing himself. A typical Mr. Kimball sentence: "Well, that's a...no, it's not...it's a...no, it's not that either...but it could be...well, no it couldn't, could it?"
10. What kin was Joe Carson to the Bradley girls?

Answer: great uncle

Edgar Buchanan played lazy, scheming, but good-hearted Uncle Joe. Although the girls called him "Uncle," he was actually their mother's uncle, thereby making him their great uncle.
