Star Trek: Enterprise Trivia Questions

1. In "Broken Bow", when T'Pol enters the Captain's quarters, the Captain and Engineer Tucker observe that she seems to be reacting to a bad smell. What is it that causes T'Pol to wrinkle her nose?

From Quiz
Critters from "Star Trek: Enterprise", Season 1

Answer: Canis lupis familiaris

Engineer Tucker made a joke about having had a shower that day, and asked the Captain if he'd had one. But since Vulcan females have a heightened sense of smell, T'Pol smelled Porthos, the Captain's cute little beagle. Porthos probably wondered about T'Pol's smell, too; he did jump up on her right before she left the Captain's quarters. Beagles have one of the most sensitive of canine noses; they can have over 200 million smell receptors (humans have a mere five million). And although I don't know how many smell receptors Vulcan female noses have, I'll bet it's less than 200 million! Corynebacterium is one of the critters that lives on human skin that helps to break down sweat, contributing to the unpleasant odor sweat can have. So is Staphylococcus epidermidis, but this one is also used in cheesemaking (cheese is Porthos' favorite food). Meerkats are African desert carnivores related to the mongoose. Canis lupis familiaris is the scientific name for the domestic dog.

2. What race is Doctor Phlox?

From Quiz Medical Log - Dr. Phlox

Answer: Denobulan

In the episode "The Catwalk", the crew have to all congregate in the nacelles to escape the radiation in the region. Whilst they are inside, Phlox comments that it reminds him of his home planet, Denobula, where 12 billion people all occupy a single continent. Question by Daddy19

3. What significant role did Captain Jonathan Archer's father play in history?

From Quiz Captain's Log - Jonathan Archer

Answer: He was the lead developer of the warp five engine.

Henry Archer worked with Zefram Cochrane on the development of the first warp five engine. Zefram Cochrane was the first person to travel at speeds faster than light due to his creation of the first warp engine. ["Memory Alpha" articles "Henry Archer" and "Zefram Cochrane."] The excellent movie, "Star Trek: First Contact," is about how the crew of the Enterprise-E, under command of Jean-Luc Picard, goes back in time to make sure the Borg do not stop this from happening and in doing so prevent humanity's first contact with Vulcans. The Enterprise NX-01 under the command of Jonathan Archer was the first starship built that could reach warp five. Sadly, Henry Archer did not live to see it built. It was Captain James T. Kirk and his bridge officers on Enterprise NCC-1701 who were the first to see the face of a Romulan while he was investigating the destruction of Earth Outpost Stations along the Romulan Neutral Zone ("TOS: Balance of Terror"). Question by christi_dove

From Quiz "Star Trek Enterprise" - General Quiz

Answer: Klaang

Klaang was played by Tommy "Tiny" Lister, Jr..

7. The droppings of Dr. Phlox's Altarian marsupial have what highly-prized property?

From Quiz Critters from "Star Trek: Enterprise", Season 1

Answer: They contain regenerative enzymes

In "Broken Bow", Dr. Phlox noticed Captain Jonathan Archer holding the animal's cage and told him to be careful. The cage shook violently, and the unseen creature emitted a trilling hiss. Dr. Phlox retrieved the cage and imitated the marsupial's sound, which soothed the creature. Apparently, this animal's poo contains special enzymes, proteins that take on the role of biological catalysts for the chemical processes of other substances. So probably these enzymes in the Altarian marsupial's poo would aid the body's own regenerative processes by adding additional catalytic boosters to speed healing of tissues damaged by wounds or illness. Want to know a cool thing about enzymes? They do their thing without using up their own substance in the process. They "take a lickin' but keep on tickin'".

8. How many wives did Dr. Phlox have?

From Quiz Medical Log - Dr. Phlox

Answer: 3

Phlox had three wives, and each of his three wives also had three husbands (Phlox being one of the three for each of them). All told, that meant there were 720 possible relationships, 42 of which had romantic possibilities. Within that relational group, there were 31 children, five of which were Phlox's. Question by reedy

9. Although Jonathan was raised in San Francisco, where was he actually born?

From Quiz Captain's Log - Jonathan Archer

Answer: New York

Born in Upstate New York in the year 2112, Jonathan soon moved with his parents to San Francisco where his father Henry was employed with Zefram Cochrane developing greater warp capability. Question by reedy

From Quiz "Star Trek Enterprise" - General Quiz

Answer: Shran

Shran is played by actor Jeffery Combs, the character has appeared in numerous episodes since "The Andorian Incident", including "Shadows Of P'Jem" and "Cease Fire".

14. Hi! I'm Ensign Sato. I'm the Communications Officer on Enterprise. I'm a really talented linguist, which is why Captain Archer sought me out. Do you know what my first name is?

From Quiz The First Names of "Enterprise"

Answer: Hoshi

Communications officer Hoshi Sato evokes another legendary "Star Trek" character: Lt. Nyota Uhura. Both are communications specialists, and both of their first names translate to the word "star" (from Japanese and Swahili, respectively). Korean native Linda Park's break occurred in "Jurassic Park III" (2001). Her first television appearance came in an episode of "Popular" the same year.

15. In "Broken Bow" Captain Archer gets shot in the leg. What seemingly inappropriately-named creature does Dr. Phlox use to help heal the wound?

From Quiz Critters from "Star Trek: Enterprise", Season 1

Answer: Osmotic eel

Even though the little critter looks like a four-armed sea star, it is called the "osmotic eel". Dr. Phlox placed it directly over the wound on Archer's leg, and was pleased at the level of healing that was revealed when he later removed the eel. Phlox allowed Archer to leave the sickbay, but told him he had to return for another session of eel healing. The process of osmosis can be useful in wound-healing. Any substance or process that draws lymph fluid from deeper tissues through the wound keeps the wound bed moist, and the movement of the lymph fluid helps remove tiny particles of dirt and debris from deeper in the tissues. Historically, people have used both honey and sugar for this purpose, and in 2014 there were commercially-prepared osmotic dressings that use both sodium chloride and honey as active osmotic ingredients.

16. What was the name of the officer who was selected ahead of Archer to pilot the NX-Alpha and by doing so, became the first person to travel at warp 2?

From Quiz Captain's Log - Jonathan Archer

Answer: A.G. Robinson

Robinson continued to accelerate in the NX-Alpha even after he was ordered to reduce speed. As a result, the NX-Alpha was destroyed, although Robinson was able to escape. The Vulcan High Command recommended that NX programme be suspended and Starfleet agreed. Robinson, Archer and Tucker worked together to prove the engine design by launching the NX-Beta. Robinson and Archer were aboard, however Robinson allowed Archer to pilot the ship, which successfully reached warp 2.5. Question by Daddy19

17. Surveying an uninhabited planet in the season two episode "Minefield", the Enterprise got hit by a cloaked mine. Another attached itself to its hull. What race had put the mines around the planet?

From Quiz Trekkin' Through The Universe Pt. 8

Answer: Romulans

This was the humans' first contact with the Romulans, who had claimed the planet for their empire. While trying to defuse the mine on the hull, Lt. Reed was speared by a strut from the mine. Capt. Archer went out to defuse it with Reed's guidance but eventually the deck plate they were on was detached and they detonated the mine while shielding themselves with shuttlecraft hatches. Question by CmdrK

18. In what year was Enterprise launched?

From Quiz What do you know about "Star Trek: Enterprise"?

Answer: 2151

Enterprise's first mission was to take a Klingon, Klaang, back to his homeworld.

19. In "Fight or Flight", what reason does Dr. Phlox give as to why he's interested in helping to keep Ensign Hoshi Sato's pet alive?

From Quiz Critters from "Star Trek: Enterprise", Season 1

Answer: He wants to feed it to his bat

Hoshi got her pet slug when visiting a planet, and then became concerned when the creature's health began to fail. She came to believe that it had been a mistake to remove the slug (called "Sluggo" by Trip) from its planet in the first place. Talking to Sluggo, she told it that Dr. Phlox would do everything he could to keep it alive and make it healthy again. The doctor corrected her, telling her the real reason he was working so hard to help keep Sluggo alive. Referring to his Pyrithian bat, he told Hoshi, "He won't eat anything once it's dead!" Hoshi relocated her slug on a planet that was similar to the one Sluggo came from. Next time, Hoshi will be a decent, responsible person and get a puppy or kitten from an intergalactic animal shelter.

20. In the second-season episode "A Night in Sickbay", Dr. Phlox performed on operation to save the life of Captain Archer's dog, Porthos. Dr. Phlox replaced Porthos' pituitary gland with that of what creature?

From Quiz Medical Log - Dr. Phlox

Answer: A Calrissian chameleon

Dr. Phlox kept a menagerie of animals in his sickbay, from which he gained medications to treat many different illnesses and conditions. The Calrissian chameleon not only provided a compatible pituitary gland for Captain Archer's beagle, but it had also been used to provide a rare toxin capable of treating respiratory infections. After the surgery on Porthos, Dr. Phlox joked that the beagle would now have the ability to blend into its surroundings. Question by reedy

From Quiz "Star Trek Enterprise" - General Quiz

Answer: Henry

Henry Archer was the designer of the warp five engine, that same engine powers Enterprise.

24. In "Unexpected", what parasite does Trip bring back from the Xyrillian ship?

From Quiz Critters from "Star Trek: Enterprise", Season 1

Answer: A Xyrillian zygote

Trip made friends with Ah'len, the Xyrillian engineer. On a break from making the necessary teraphasic-coil repairs, Ah'len showed Trip the Xyrillian holo-chamber and invited him to play a Xyrillian game. The two pushed their fingers into a container filled with transparent beads. When the beads lit up, Trip and Ah'len were able to read each other's minds. This is how Xyrillians transfer genetic material for impregnation: the female Xyrillian transfers the material to make a clone of herself to the male, who carries and gives birth to the clone. Ah'len had no idea it would work between species! The Enterprise catches up with the Xyrillian ship and the fetus is removed from Trip and implanted into a Xyrillian male for the remainder of the gestation period. I have a question, though: if the Xyrillians only give birth to clones of the females, how do they generate the males to carry the fetuses?

25. In the episode "The Expanse" an alien device attacks Earth, cutting a trench into the Earth's surface between which two places?

From Quiz Trekkin' Through The Universe Pt. 8

Answer: Florida and Venezuela

The alien attack causes the death of seven million people of which Commander Tucker's sister was one of them. Courtesy of the Suliban, Captain Archer learns that a race called the Xindi were behind the attack and they are planning the destruction of Earth. Enterprise is therefore assigned to locate and destroy this weapon. This episode sets up the story arc that would take place in series 3. Question by Daddy19.

29. In "Terra Nova", the Novans make armor from the shells of the armadillo-like creatures they also use for food. What do they call these animals?

From Quiz Critters from "Star Trek: Enterprise", Season 1

Answer: Diggers

The digger is a burrowing animal native to Terra Nova. Captain Archer and Lieutenant Reed caught a glimpse of a live one after just a few minutes in a Terra Novan cave. The hind end disappearing into the dirt looked very much like the hind end of a Terran armadillo. They found a pile of digger skins in another chamber, and later observed the Novans wearing parts of digger shells as armor. I couldn't find any Earth culture that used armadillo shells for armor, but we do make purses and baskets and musical instruments from them. Some native Americans made jewelry and fetishes from various parts of the animal.
