Ensign Hoshi Sato (Linda Park) and Commander Charles Tucker III (Connor Trinneer) have an extensive set of 4,000-year-old ruins to explore complete with examples of hieroglyph-type indecipherable inscriptions all over the different chamber walls. They don't have a lot of time before they are contacted by Captain Archer (Scott Bakula) about a dangerous incoming storm, requiring them to return to the shuttlepod and return to the ship.

Due to her Vulcan physiology and logical mind, T'Pol is the only one who seems to have been able to maintain control of her faculties and to stay conscious. I've transmitted a distress call, but the nearest Vulcan ship is more than nine days away. By the time they arrive, they may only find debris... if that. After the opening credits, T'Pol continues, and the audience gets more context: "...I'm continuing my analysis of the condition that's stricken the crew. But without Doctor Phlox's assistance, I'm not hopeful about reversing its effects. I'm documenting my findings so that Starfleet will at least have a record of what happened. The symptoms began not long after we set a course for the trinary system. That was nearly two days ago." Sub-Commander T'Pol was portrayed by Jolene Blalock.

Dr. Phlox was not a member of the away team, and he was, in fact, monitoring the decontamination process. The other three were all in the room, along with the fourth member of the away team: Captain Archer's beagle, Porthos. Unfortunately, Dr. Phlox determines that Porthos has picked up a pathogen from the surface, and must stay in sickbay for observation. Captain Archer was played by Scott Bakula, Sub-Commander T'Pol was portrayed by Jolene Blalock, John Billingsly acted as Dr. Phlox, and Linda Park was Ensign Sato. And, of course, Porthos was played by Breezy.

It's been four days since the incident, and while crews have been working around the clock to effect repairs, the damage is extensive enough that (Chief Engineer) Commander Tucker estimates that it would take three to four months to complete... *if* they can find tritanium alloy. Given this information, Captain Archer does the math and realizes that it will take a decade to travel to the shipbuilding facilities of Jupiter Station to have Starfleet's resources. Daniels is unsure of the usefulness of going to the library, given that there is no working electricity in the ruined city and the library is all computer-based. Thus, when they arrive to the library and find it filled with paper books, Daniels is stunned. There is no longer a monument to the Federation in front of the library, nor any reference to it that he can find. Before they can make their way back to the shuttlepod, however, another, even bigger incoming storm forces them to abandon their original plan in favour of using the ship's transporter. And while the transporter has been used to move people in the past, it is still a relatively new, and often untrusted technology. Hoshi mentions to Trip that taking apart and reassembling more than five trillion molecules is "a pretty big jigsaw puzzle. What if some other pieces get put in the wrong place?"

While discussing the scans of the black hole, Commander Tucker notes that the Vulcan star charts have records of more than 2,000 black holes, and Sub-Commander T'Pol responds that none of them are part of a trinary system (originally three suns, one of which has collapsed upon itself to form the singularity). Despite the warning against extreme gravitational shear and the resultant need to stay at impulse, Captain Archer decides to approach and investigate. Ensign Sato is unable to pinpoint the energy signal closely enough to use the transporter, but she is able to narrow it down to three city blocks. Looking at the screen, Lt. Reed recognizes a square with a fountain and a nearby tavern that they visited, and suggests that the communicator might have fallen out of his pocket when they sat down in the tavern.

Deuterium is an isotope of of hydrogen with one neutron, also called 'heavy hydrogen'. In "Star Trek", deuterium is used in an admixture with tritium (another isotope of hydrogen with TWO neutrons) as the 'fuel' used in antimatter engines. With their recent ship damage, Tucker explains that most of the ship's reserve of deuterium was lost. Archer adds that they only have two weeks' worth left. Despite their obvious need, Tessic offers up multiple excuses to try to get the Enterprise officers to leave.

Kreetassans are very particular about etiquette and courtesy, according to their own definitions. In their first encounter (season 1, episode 22 "Vox Sola"), the Kreetassans were offended when Captain Archer ate food in front of them... an activity that they consider as taboo in public as we would consider mating in public. This time, they were ejected from the planet without an explanation of what they did wrong.

At the far reaches of their communications range, a Tellarite freighter responds to their distress call, but they do not divert course to help. Rather, they simply send information (coordinates) to a nearby repair station. Without having had any prior contact with the species, only Sub-Commander T'Pol is able to give any information on them, and the best she can offer is that "they're not the most agreeable species, but they're usually trustworthy." Jolene Blalock portrayed Sub-Commander T'Pol.

The extent of her injuries is unknown, but she is thrown from her seat and knocked unconscious. At first count, the explosion that breached C and D decks only injured 16 more people, with no fatalaties. Ensign Hoshi Sato was played by Linda Park.

At first, T'Pol tries to put off Archer's inquiry, citing her reasons as personal, but Tucker and Archer push the issue, wondering what could possibly be personal to her in such an out-of-the-way place like Carbon Creek, Pennsylvania? She relents and tells them that she was visiting the site of First Contact between Vulcans and humans. This statement, of course, is met with disbelief, as (human) history puts First Contact in 2063 in Bozeman, Montana with Zefram Cochrane. This is what prompts the story from T'Pol.

At various points he is making a ruckus while working on it on the bridge, or trying to get the captain to try it out (and getting rebuffed, since the captain is preoccupied with his own concerns).

Only after E'Lis, one of Tessic's colleagues, suggests medical supplies do they finally agree on 200 litres of deuterium in exchange for four power cells plus whatever medical supplies can be spared. E'Lis was played by Bari Hochwald.

A crucial component of a warp engine, the plasma injector propels drive plasma into the warp coils (which generated the subspace displacement field that allowed for faster-than-light travel). Commander Tucker explains to Captain Archer that, while they have five plasma injectors, one of them is about to "give up the ghost", and that the ship needs four to run on. If anything were to happen, it would not be able to run on just three. Commander Charles Tucker III was portrayed by Connor Trinneer.

If you don't recall the events of the previous episode "Minefield", Lt. Reed's leg was pierced and pinned by a metal rod extending from a mine attached to the Enterprise's hull. Malcolm is keen to return to duty and is frustrated with Dr. Phlox's estimate of one to two weeks before he'll be able to do so. Phlox emphasizes a positive attitude as being the key to faster healing, and that complaining will probably extend things. Lieutenant Malcolm Reed was played by Dominic Keating while John Billingsley was Dr. Phlox.

The bridge crew are actively trying to determine what has happened, and Ensign Mayweather reports that something has struck the hull on the starboard side, upper aft quadrant. Captain Archer is the first to spot it, noting that it is too small to be a ship, and Sub-Commander T'Pol confirms that there are no lifesigns. Lieutenant Reed determines that it is armed with tricobalt explosives and volunteers to be the one to go outside to defuse it, due to his ordnance training. Ensign Travis Mayweather was played by Anthony Montgomery, while Sub-Commander T'Pol was played by Jolene Blalock.

Cyrus Ramsey's 'incident' purportedly happened in the year 2146, just six years prior to the events of this episode.
