The first series of 'Ghosts' introduces us to Alison and Mike Cooper, a young couple who are looking to buy a property and not finding anything they like or can afford. As they are being shown round yet another flat by an estate agent, Alison receives a phone call from a solicitor, informing her that she is the last surviving relative of the Button family and has inherited a substantial country house and estate. Alison and Mike travel down to the house and instantly fall in love with it although they can see it would entail a lot of work. They move in, full of enthusiasm about what work needs to be done. Unbeknown to them at the time, there are several ghosts of family members and other people who had met their deaths in the extensive grounds, who do not welcome the idea of sharing what they regard as 'their' home with living newcomers!

In order to convince Jay that she can interact with ghosts, she directs him on how to fix the boiler - something she'd not know how to do on her own - by relaying instructions provided by the ghosts who died of cholera and live in the basement.

Neither Alison nor Mike are writers, but they are both very excited at the thought of developing the house into a hotel to provide an income, so that they can give up their jobs and run the proposed hotel together. Mike is played by actor Kiell Smith-Bynoe in his first major role, and Alison is played by Charlotte Ritchie, who has made several film and television appearances including an uncredited appearance in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' in 2015. The first installment of Series 1 informs us that the last inhabitant of Button House, which dates back to the 15th century, was Lady Heather Button, who died in the house at the age of 99. As she died intestate, it was then that the search was made to find an heir for her estate, which resulted in Alison and Mike moving in. The series was filmed at West Horsley Place, near Guildford in Surrey. The extensive property had been inherited unexpectedly by Bamber Gascoigne of 'University Challenge' fame from his great-aunt. He generously signed it over to the West Horsley Place Trust. The property dates back to the 15th century and has been used in various films and television programmes. It is open to the public for guided tours and even has a large opera house in its grounds.

Combining elements of badminton, tennis, and ping-pong, pickleball involves batting a plastic ball (which has holes in it) back and forth across a net. In this episode, the ghosts learn that the Farnsbys demolished their carriage house in order to build a pickleball court in violation with the local Historical Preservation Board ordinances. As Henry is the chair of this board, Sam uses this information to convince him to approve the permit for their B&B.

Discussions among the ghostly inhabitants reveal that they are very much against the idea of sharing what they feel is 'their' property with the newcomers, even briefly considering killing them. Alison is leaning out of a window and is pushed out by one of the ghosts, Julian Fawcett MP, who, though now deceased and in ghostly form, is by great efforts of concentration able to move things. He sees her leaning far out of the window and quickly seizes his opportunity. Following his attack, Alison ends up in hospital, at one point being declared clinically dead for a short while, and is put into a coma. When she awakes and returns home it transpires that she is able to see and talk to the ghosts. After some heated talks, both sides agree to live together as harmoniously as possible, which sets the scene for the series.

Thorfinn and Flower's date involves Jay cooking (and then tasting) a meal chosen by Thorfinn, being serenaded by Alberta, and watching a one-man improv show hosted by Pete. Because Sam and Jay cancelled their dinner reservations at Jay's favourite restaurant twice in a single week, they are now blacklisted from the establishment.

Sam and Jay accidentally summon the ghost who was sleeping with Hetty's husband in a seance at their last-minute Halloween Party. Molly (the ghost in question) is an Irish maid and is holding a feather duster when she appears. Earlier in the evening, Jay had lent their neighbour June the very same feather duster to complete her Ruth Maid-er Ginsberg costume and needs to track her down at Liam Neeson's party in order to retrieve it so they can send Molly back to the afterworld.

Isaac accidentally shot British colonel Nigel Chessum, whose ghost occupies a shed on the Woodstone property with three other British soldier ghosts. Isaac has been secretly in love with Nigel for many years, and in the season one finale, they finally acknowledge their mutual attraction.

In order to continue dating her, Flower asks Thorfinn to try and work on his anger issues so he turns to Pete for advice. He does pretty well at controlling his anger when Sasappis and Alberta try to needle him but can't control his rage any longer when Soren repeatedly derides Norway and the Norse people over dinner.

Sam describes the show by saying, "they take 20 sexy singles and they put them in a really cold house so everybody has to stay bundled up and you can't see what anyone looks like - so that the singles can connect emotionally. Both Sasappis and Thorfinn initially say that the idea of the show is stupid until they find themselves hooked.

With Julian having pushed Alison out of a window, defenestration in 'Ghosts' seems to be quite the order of the day! In the case of Lady Fanny Button, her husband had been having an adulterous affair and pushed her out of an upstairs window to her death so he could be with his mistress. Lady Fanny, played by Martha Howe-Douglas, is the bossiest of the resident ghosts with the possible exception of the Captain (Ben Willbond), who tries to plan every detail of what happens in Button House with military precision.

After Jay innocently takes an interest in some upside-down pineapple ornaments at the Farnsbys' yard sale, we learn from Judy (the ghost of Henry Farnsby's mother) that this signifies that the Farnsbys are into swinging. Later in the episode, Jay and Sam visit the Farnsbys' house whilst they are hosting a swinger party which further deepens the misunderstanding in the Farnsbys' minds.

Trevor's pants disappeared during a party at Woodstone with his stockbroker buddies, who planned to spend the weekend in a drug and alcohol binge. He told them he lost his pants having sex with the female limo driver, but he actually gave them to an intern who was had been ordered to walk back to town wearing only a t-shirt as a hazing ritual. Trevor died of a heart attack when he took pills and washed them down with alcohol.

Sam tells Jay that he doesn't need to be high to cook a great meal by comparing his current situation to Luke Skywalker trusting Obi-Wan and turning off his targeting computer whilst on the Death Star in the first Star Wars film. The tactic (and the fact that Sam got all of the details correct) works and Jay's confidence in his own ability is restored.

Winky introduces himself first and reveals that he was trampled by a horse. Shiki then introduces herself, says she's Lenape, and that she's been a ghost since the 1500s. Before Sam can tell her that she also knows a Lenape ghost (Sasappis), the editor walks in. Sam later discovers that Shiki and Sasappis do know each other and their relationship involved unrequited love. This leads to Jay getting involved and helping Sasappis send messages to Shiki via Sam.

Patrick Butcher, known as Pat, was a youth group leader, and was tragically shot accidentally by one of the boys in his group while he was giving them an archery lesson in the grounds of Button House. His ghost appears dressed in his group's uniform of khaki shorts and long-sleeved shirt with a yellow and grey striped scarf, and also the remains of the arrow which killed him through his neck. Pat is played by actor Jim Howick, who has appeared in several television shows and films, most recently starring in the new British sitcom 'Here We Go', which premiered in 2022, and also stars Katherine Parkinson from 'The It Crowd' and Alison Steadman.

One of the show's producers revealed that people with cholera were put in a "pesthouse", an infirmary for people with contagious diseases, and that Woodstone Manor must have been built over the site of the cholera pesthouse.

Julian Fawcett MP had in life been a Member of Parliament. He had been involved in a lurid headline-making scandal at the time of his death from a heart attack, which explains the lack of his trousers. The character is played by Simon Farnaby, who has many film and television appearances to his credit, including the much-watched Paddington Bear sketch 'Platinum Party at the Palace', celebrating the Platinum Anniversary of the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II in the summer of 2022. In this, he played the part of the stoical footman who didn't flinch when covered in cream when Paddington accidentally trod on a pastry, sending its contents flying. Even more recently he has been involved in co-writing the screenplay for a musical film, 'Wonka' showing the backstory of Roald Dahl's book 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'.

Sam and Jay have the event planned and guest list finalised before Jay confesses that he forgot to get the B&B's liquor license. They decide to go ahead anyway ("what's one more day?") and of course, the assessor shows up partway through. To effectively hide their guests and the liquor, Alberta has the idea to create a speakeasy in the vault. As she leads the guests to the secret passage entrance, Sam says they just need to know the password. She makes one up on the spot taking inspiration from what she could see (Pete was standing next to her). Hearing her choice, Pete responds with, "pretty sure 'arrow' would have sufficed."

Robin, the caveman, was by far the oldest of all the ghosts. He had met his death before Button House had even existed by being struck by lightning in what became its grounds. In his ghostly existence, the lightning strike is believed to have enabled him to have some limited control over electricity, which can sometimes come in useful! The character of Robin is played by Laurence Rickard, who also plays the decapitated head of Tudor nobleman Sir Humphrey. Kitty, played by Lolly Adefope, is a young, kind-natured but very innocent noblewoman who lived and died during Georgian times. Mary had been burned at the stake as a witch during the Stuart era and is played by Katy Wix.

Of course, none of the meat options suggested by Hetty are ingredients Sam and Jay have available and there aren't any nearby specialty stores that supply them. As Jay says, "people don't eat boiled calf's heads or beaver tails any more. We found better things". Coincidentally, Sam and Jay have hired someone to come and remove the pigeons in their attic so Jay pivots and ends up cooking them instead. Since squab is just immature pigeon (generally under 4 weeks old), this is a pretty close match and the meal Jay eventually produces goes over well with the wedding planner.
