Colours in Video Games Trivia Questions

1. The green dinosaur Yoshi is one of the most recognisable characters in the 'Super Mario' series. In which game did he first appear?

From Quiz
Bein' Green

Answer: Super Mario World

Yoshi first appeared in 'Super Mario World' as a mount for Mario to ride on. He also ate enemies, grabbing them with his long tongue, and could either swallow them and turn them into a spotted egg, or spit them out. His background music usually contains bongos. Yoshis come in different colours depending on their abilities ('Super Mario Sunshine' has orange and purple Yoshis, for instance), but the main one is green. Nintendo did intend for Mario to have a dinosaur companion in 'Super Mario', but the limited technology of the NES meant that they had to wait until the more powerful SNES came out before introducing Yoshi. He starred in his own game, 'Super Mario 2: Yoshi's Island', where he acted as Baby Mario's babysitter, and subsequent spin-offs. He also appears in the 'Super Smash Bros' series.

2. The "Battletoads" were all originally green. Which one, perhaps because of his inflamed spot, officially became brown?

From Quiz Green as a Gooseberry

Answer: Pimple

"Battletoads" is a beat-em up platform game introduced by Rare in 1991 as direct competition to the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". The main protagonists were all named after skin conditions; Rash, Zitz and Pimple (the only singular spot and Boilz does not exist). Their initial antagonist was the Dark Queen. All three were created in a medium shade of green. Since the initial launch Rash, the "cool" dude of the crew, has changed skin colour to become a bright shade of green. Zitz, their leader and tactical genius, shifted to a lighter green with hints of yellow, then moved to olive green before settling on a bluish-green arrangement. That leaves Pimple, the gentle giant of the crew, who moved to a light tan colour before it settled on a deeper shade of brown.

3. What sort of creature is the red spiked Knuckles from the Sega series "Sonic the Hedgehog"?

From Quiz Red as a Raspberry

Answer: Echidna

Knuckles makes his first appearance in the video game "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" (1994), where, because he is so gullible, he is easily tricked by the sinister Dr. Eggman into attacking Sonic and Tails. His popularity was such that he became a playable character that same year in the game "Sonic & Knuckles" (1994). Knuckles is a short beaked echidna who, despite opposing Sonic at the start, winds up being his best friend. His spiked hands are great in a fight, they help him climb walls and he glides with ease. He is the last of the Knuckles Clan and his major role is to guard the Master Emerald, which controls the Chaos Emeralds.

4. Blanka, a savage green-skinned man with the power to control electricity, was one of the eight original fighters in 'Street Fighter 2'. Which description best suits his home stage?

From Quiz Bein' Green

Answer: A quay in Brazil

Blanka is one of the eight main fighters of 'Street Fighter 2' along with Ryu, Edmund Honda, Guile, Ken Masters, Chun-Li, Zangief and Dhalsim. Originally intended to be human, he was ultimately depicted as a savage mutant with green skin and orange hair, who used to be human but turned green and gained the power to control electricity from electric eels while living in the Amazon jungle. His signature moves include rolling into a ball and charging his opponent, and channelling electricity through his body. In later games, he befriends Dan Hibiki, the 'joke' character of the franchise. The marketplace is Chun-Li's stage, the temple is Dhalsim's, and the military base, with the catchy theme that goes with anything, is Guile's.

5. What is the name of the protagonist in "Beyond Good and Evil"?

From Quiz Green as a Gooseberry

Answer: Jade

"Beyond Good and Evil" is an action adventure game, first released in 2003 for the for the PlayStation 2, Microsoft Windows, Xbox and GameCube platforms. The main character is Jade who is a photographic journalist, skilled in the martial arts and has joined up with an underground movement that is working towards exposing an alien conspiracy. True to her name she is an overkill of green; green headband, green jacket and green pants... even her lipstick is green. Fortunately, her shirt is white. Despite that, her arrival on the video game scene was a breath of fresh air. Jade wasn't targeted at a specific audience which seemed to be the want for game developers at the time. Apart from that she was also a character that people could relate to, not just someone who was good to look at. All of the other colours named above are shades of blue.

6. What gender is Commander Shepard from the "Mass Effect" series of games?

From Quiz Red as a Raspberry

Answer: Either male or female

In this BioWare series, Shepard is a playable character whose gender is dependent on the choice made by the player. The male player's first name is John (and he's dark-haired, so he doesn't really belong here) and the female's name is Jane (she's the ember-lock). Neither of the names are used in the dialogue during the game and the character is generally referred to as "Shepard". In coming up with the name the creators wanted one that worked well for either gender, had a leadership quality about it and was both a common but strong American name. The choice of Shepard was inspired by the first American in space, Alan Shepard. Interestingly, the initial version of the female Shepard was meant to be blonde haired. Six different versions of the character were put forward, into a competition that was voted upon by the public. The blonde haired, freckle faced character won through. BioWare decided that the hair colouring may have been too much of an influencing feature and reworked the colours and the second time around, Jane Shepard became a ginger.

7. What Nintendo game series includes sequels subtitled "The Lost Age" and "Dark Dawn"?

From Quiz A Golden Opportunity

Answer: Golden Sun

A series of handheld RPGs released by Nintendo and developed by Camelot Software Planning, "Golden Sun" has somewhat of a cult status amongst players due to its tendency to be a sleeper hit upon release. Critically lauded, the games ended up becoming exemplars of traditional, turn-based role-playing and brought fantasy genre fare (a la "Final Fantasy") to the GBA and Nintendo DS at a time where completely different genres paved the way. Much of the storyline revolves around the uses of magic and alchemy.

8. In the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' series, Knuckles the Echidna got his own spin-off, 'Knuckles Chaotix', which featured a motley crew of animals, including a big green fellow called Vector. What kind of animal was he?

From Quiz Bein' Green

Answer: Crocodile

Vector the Crocodile was originally conceived as the keyboard player in the Sonic the Hedgehog Band in the development stages of 'Sonic the Hedgehog'. The band were supposed to appear on the sound test screen, but were scrapped due to constaints. The character was repurposed as a member of the Chaotix Crew, which also featured Charmy the Bee, Mighty the Armadillo and Espio the Chameleon. Vector is the oldest member of the crew and an aspiring (and dreadful) musician who wore a pair of headphones. He has the power to breathe fire and blow bubbles which enable him to float. The Chaotix Crew appear in 'Sonic Heroes', minus Mighty, as a detective agency; Dr Eggman poses as a client asking them to take on a case. Vector is the leader and 'muscles' of the group.

9. In what Rare-developed James Bond game can players use the Golden Gun to kill enemies with one shot?

From Quiz A Golden Opportunity

Answer: Goldeneye

Nintendo's Game of the Year in 1997 (released two years after the movie), "Goldeneye" was a hit for the N64, and made by a relatively small team no less. The game became a progenitor for many later console first-person shooters and was known for not only an extensive single-player campaign, but an endlessly fun multiplayer experience. Shortly after this game sprung to popularity, Rare created the "Perfect Dark" franchise, subsequently bringing it to the Xbox 360 when they were bought by Microsoft.

10. The evil carrot-top known as Ganondorf Dragmire frequently uses the Triforce of Power to launch attacks on Hyrule in which series of games?

From Quiz Red as a Raspberry

Answer: The Legend of Zelda

Generally known by his nickname, Ganon, Dragmire, in his true form is a monstrous beast that resembles a giant boar. He was introduced in "The Legend of Zelda" (1986) as the main antagonist and has either been or has been mentioned in most of the series since. In the first of that series he was promoted as the Prince of Darkness but was (really) a run of the mill monster with a scary title. Since then the writers have steadily developed him as a character to the point that he is now a mighty warlock.

11. He comes from Hyrule, he wears green, he has pointy ears, and he's the hero of the 'Legend of Zelda' series. He appears in many different forms throughout the series, including a dark reflection, a demon and even a wolf! Who is he?

From Quiz Bein' Green

Answer: link

Link first appeared in 'The Legend of Zelda' in 1986, where he had to save the titular princess from the villain Ganon and obtain the power of the Triforce. Since then, he has appeared in several games, although not all of the Links are the same person; however, they all wear similar green outfits and have a similar elf-like appearance (although Link is a Hylian, not an elf). He often fights with the Master Sword, a magic sword which enables him to enter the Sacred Realm where the Triforce is kept, and has other items at his disposal such as a magical ocarina (in 'Ocarina of Time'), or masks which enable him to shapeshift (in 'Majora's Mask'). He has also had cameo appearances in other series such as 'Super Smash Bros' (where he was one of the original playable fighters), 'Soul Calibur' and 'Mario Kart'.

12. What type of creature is Bulbasaur?

From Quiz Green as a Gooseberry

Answer: Pokemon

Bulbasaur is a Generation 1 Pokemon and, as his name implies, he is part plant and part dinosaur... and he's green from head to toe. At birth a seed is planted into his back and this grows into a giant green bulb. This bulb holds nutrient rich seeds and hides two slender vines that provide nourishment through photosynthesis. Bulbasaur will evolve into Ivysaur at level 16 and then Venusaur at level 32. He's a cute little fella as Bulbasaur but the dinosaur part of him gets less cute as he evolves.

13. In which 'Final Fantasy' game would you find the green-haired, green-clad Summoner Rydia?

From Quiz Bein' Green

Answer: Final Fantasy IV

Rydia is a Summoner from the village of Mist, with the ability to summon sentient monsters called Eidolons. In order to summon an Eidolon, a Summoner has to defeat them in battle first. Rydia's personal Eidolon is called Whyt, a baby Eidolon or Whytkin, which can be customised by the player. Cecil, the main character, accidentally kills all the Summoners in Mist, including Rydia's mother, which Rydia resents him for, although Cecil manages to befriend her. She is washed overboard when the party's ship is attacked by a Leviathan, which takes her to the land of Feynmarch. She trains under the King and Queen of Eidolons there, and is subsequently much older when she returns to the party. She can use black magic spells and equip various weapons as an adult. She is voiced by Noriko Shitaya in the remake (Caroline Macey in the dub).

14. Appearing in which series of video games is our protagonist who is dressed in green combat armour and goes by such aliases as Corporal Flynn Taggart and John "Reaper" Grimm?

From Quiz Green as a Gooseberry

Answer: Doom

This is Doomguy. He is also known as Doom Marine and Doom Slayer... and for those that get tired of three syllables, simply call him Slayer. Decked out in green armour, he appeared in the original series of "Doom", way back in 1993. Everything about Doomguy is pretty vague. He has a grey space helmet which hides his features, he doesn't say much at all and his backstory was kept deliberately hazy and unclear. Even his real name has been kept from us though, part of that thinking, is that he assumes the identity of the player.

15. The fireball that is Joanna Dark is the title character and main protagonist of which series?

From Quiz Red as a Raspberry

Answer: Perfect Dark

Thanks to a genetic quirk, Joanna's shoulder length red hair has a blonde streak through it. Raised by her father, who ran a bail bond agency Jo developed her marksmanship skills and became lethal in the art of hand-to-hand combat. Recruited into the Carrington Institute she learns the art of espionage and becomes your classic spy heroine. In her black and blue suit and a pair of pistols strapped to her legs she saves the world again and again... and again.

16. A series of games featured three green amphibians called Zitz, Rash and Pimple. By what collective name are these three better known?

From Quiz Bein' Green

Answer: Battletoads

'Battletoads' was a platform-scrolling beat 'em up, originally released for the NES in 1991, with later versions appearing for the Sega Mega Drive and Game Gear, and the Amiga. In the original 'Battletoads' game, Zitz and Rash had to rescue Pimple and Princess Angelica, with the help of Professor T Bird, after they were kidnapped by the Dark Queen. In a sequel, 'Battletoads in Battlemaniacs', it was Zitz's turn to get kidnapped by the Dark Queen. Pimple was the muscles of the group, Rash the fast one, and Zitz somewhere in between. An arcade 'Battletoads' game, with added sound effects, was released in 1994 and was geared more towards combat, rather than dodging obstacles. DIC tried to capitalise on the popularity of 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' with a 'Battletoads' cartoon, but it never got past the pilot (if you're interested, it's on Youtube, and it's terrible).

17. What "Dota 2" hero, named after a scientist who converts metal into gold, earns extra coinage from Bounty Runes?

From Quiz A Golden Opportunity

Answer: Alchemist

Alchemist, considered a carry hero, usually attains strength through amassing wealth at a rate superior to other characters in the game due in part to a passive ability called Greevil's Greed, allowing him to get bonus gold from creep kills and Bounty Runes. This, along with proper jungling or laning techniques, will set Alchemist up to be a late-game dominator since farmed purchases will allow him to build all the necessary items. In addition, Alchemist is able to purchase Aghanim's Scepter, a relatively expensive, but versatile item, and gift it to other heroes.

18. The 'Danganronpa' spin-off 'Absolute Despair Girls' features Komaru Naegi, sister of 'Danganronpa' protagonist Makoto, who faces off against a group of terrible children known as the Warriors of Hope. What is the name of their green-haired leader?

From Quiz Bein' Green

Answer: Monaca Towa

The five Warriors of Hope attend Hope's Peak Elementary School, and like the 'Dangan Ronpa' cast, have Ultimate names, although they are named after classes rather than talents and have 'Li'l' at the beginning due to being young children (Li'l Ultimate Homeroom, Li'l Ultimate PE and so on). They all assign themselves fantasy game-style classes: Monaca is the Mage, Masaru is the Hero, Jataro is the Priest, Nagisa is the Sage and Kotoko is the Fighter. Each child pilots a mech which Komaru and Touko Fukawa/Genocide Jill must defeat. Monaca is in a wheelchair, but is later revealed to be faking her disability, and enjoys manipulating the other children. She idolises Junko Enoshima, the villain of the first and second 'Dangan Ronpa' games, and is revealed to be the half-sister of Haji Towa, the leader of an adult resistance group. She also appears in the 'Danganronpa 3' anime, having killed Miaya Gekkougahara and replaced her with a lifelike robot.

19. What early NES game was sold with a gold cartridge in the United States?

From Quiz A Golden Opportunity

Answer: The Legend of Zelda

While the Japanese version of "The Legend of Zelda" was released in a regular, grey cartridge in its home country, the American version of the game was sent out in a shiny, gold cartridge. Fortunately, the game turned out to be extremely popular, selling millions over its lifespan. Nintendo later brought back the gold cartridge for the release of "Majora's Mask", a later "Legend of Zelda" release on the Nintendo 64. Nintendo also released "DuckTales" and "Superman" on gold cartridges.

20. Claire Redfield is a real spitfire with hair to match. She is a member of TerraSave, fighting against the threats of bio-organic weapons in which zombie infested series of video games?

From Quiz Red as a Raspberry

Answer: Resident Evil

Claire's parents died while she was still a youngster and this strengthened her bond with her brother Chris who, initially, joined the US Air Force and then became a member of STAR (Special Tactics and Rescue Service). Claire's university days were spent studying motorcycle customization and lock-picking (where is this university?). During the times she spent with her brother he taught her hand-to-hand combat and provided her with some firearms training. In 1998 Claire would travel to Raccoon City in search of her brother. She doesn't find Chris but she does find a lot of zombies and is lucky to get out alive. She cannot stay out of trouble and winds up in the middle of several bio-hazard breakouts... seeing she cannot keep away she decides that she will devote her life endeavouring to destroy these threats.

21. Which Capcom fighting game features the green-haired succubus Morrigan Aensland?

From Quiz Bein' Green

Answer: Darkstalkers

'Darkstalkers' is somewhat unusual in that many of the characters are fantasy creatures, such as vampires, catgirls, succubi and werewolves, rather than ordinary humans. The Scottish succubus princess Morrigan Aensland is the main character of 'Darkstalkers', and gets her name from an Irish goddess of war. She first appeared in 'Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors', the first game in the series, and has appeared in every game since. Her fighting style is comparable to that of Ryu and Ken of 'Street Fighter' fame (another Capcom game). She is also the first 'Darkstalkers' character to appear in the 'Marvel vs Capcom' series. 'Darkstalkers 3' introduces Lilith, who is a clone of Morrigan created from a portion of her power stored away by Belial Aensland, her father.

22. Which lobster-top (red-head) is the King Koopa and one of the primary antagonists in the "Mario" franchise?

From Quiz Red as a Raspberry

Answer: Bowser

The Koopa Troop is one of the badlands of the "Mario" franchise that is inhabited by hordes of turtle-like creatures called Koopas and Bowser (also known as King Bowser) is their leader. He is a big, powerful beast, has spikes on his back and is capable of breathing fire. He made his first appearance in 1985's "Super Mario Bros" with the evil aim of taking over the Mushroom Kingdom. He casts a spell on the land, turning everyone into inanimate objects and then kidnaps Princess Toadstool... the only person capable of reversing the spell. He has gone on to become the principal enemy of Mario and has appeared in the majority of the games in the franchise. He still continues to try and defeat Mario and he regularly tries to kidnap the Princess Peach.

23. In video game development, what does it mean for a game to 'go gold'?

From Quiz A Golden Opportunity

Answer: It's ready to be sold

A gold copy of any given game is a master copy created by a developer for use in publishing; when the developer has gone through all the beta tests and worked out all the kinks in the coding, a gold copy is created and sent off to be copied for sale. That being said, referring to a game for being a 'Gold Edition' is often a tactic performed by publishers to rerelease titles, including extra content, and often for the sake of collectors.

24. Who has been known as the "hero of time" and "the protector of Hyrule" and possesses the Triforce of Courage?

From Quiz Green as a Gooseberry

Answer: Link

Link is the hero in the "Legend of Zelda" series of high fantasy action-adventure video games that first launched in 1986. Link has been the main hero of those games. However, don't make the mistake of thinking that he is one person. Over the years there have been many incarnations of Link. They are chosen by the Golden Goddesses and each one is infused with the spirit of the hero and are tasked with saving Princess Zelda and the land of Hyrule Sometimes the new incarnations are given names to differentiate them from other Links. For example, the Link in "Ocarina of Time" (1998) was called the Hero of Time and in "The Wind Waker" (2002) he's the Hero of Wind. Yes, I know, not very original. That aside, for most of these years, our hero of green has been just that... but wait, gasp, horror, shock... in "Breath of the Wild" (2017), after thirty glorious green years, someone has decided to dress him in a blue tunic. Sacrilege!
