VG ...in Common Trivia Questions

1. Atari's "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" became infamous for contributing to the largest video game market crash in history. In which state are thousands of "E.T." cartridges believed to be buried?

From Quiz
This Quiz is Not About Movies!

Answer: New Mexico

"E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" was an adventure game released for the Atari 2600 in December 1982, several months after the classic sci-fi film debuted. Atari had hoped to capitalize on the film's success and produced what they felt were enough games to satisfy that year's holiday demand. However, the video game's development was rushed and ultimately flopped. Today, it is often considered to be one of the worst video games ever made. The failure of the "E.T." video game, combined with an already saturated video game market, led to a major recession in the video game industry the following year. In September 1983, thousands (if not millions) of "E.T." game cartridges (along with other excess Atari products) were believed to have been buried at a landfill near Alamogordo, New Mexico. In April 2014, an excavation team managed to dig up over a thousand "E.T." games from the landfill.

2. The 2006 action game "Act of War: High Treason" has an encounter at what Wisconsin military base?

From Quiz Video Games and Wisconsin

Answer: Fort McCoy

Task Force Talon attempts to meet Colonel Whitmore at Fort McCoy, which is the only active military base in Wisconsin. It has been around as McCoy since 1926. "Act of War: High Treason" is set on the brink of a presidential election. It features presidential assassinations, missing candidates, shadowy conspiracies and potential biological warfare. It was released by Atari in the spring of 2006. Fort Howard was built near Green Bay in 1812 and decommissioned in 1853. Several of its structures are at Heritage Hill State Park. Fort Crawford, near Prairie du Chien, was active from 1812 to 1856. And Camp Randall is now a football stadium; it was a military base during the US Civil War.

3. What weapon is Shadow Man's primary weakness in "Mega Man 3"?

From Quiz Shadows

Answer: Top Spin

Shadow Man is one of the eight robot masters created by Dr. Wily in "Mega Man 3". The game was first released by CAPCOM for the NES in September, 1990. Shadow Man is designed to look and act like a ninja. His signature weapon, the Shadow Blade, is based on a shuriken (a sharp star shaped projectile). Shadow Man is one the more difficult of the "Mega Man 3" robot masters to defeat without the aid of his main weakness which is Top Man's weapon, Top Spin.

4. "The Last of Us" (2013 PS3 & PS4) was the winner in 2014. Which other game from developer, Naughty Dog, took home the award in 2010?

From Quiz And The Winner Is

Answer: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

"Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" (2009 PS3/PS4) was a follow up to "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" (2007 PS3), the first in the series about treasure hunter, Nathan Drake. In a little over five years, "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" sold almost seven million copies worldwide, thanks in part to winning this award. The game also won Best Console Game at the Gamescom Awards of 2009 and Game of the Year at the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards.

5. "Power Tool Pursuit!" was a 1994 SNES release that saw a chainsaw and a nail gun used to fight off adversaries such as velociraptors, giant scorpions and robots. Which TV show was this game based on?

From Quiz Game Shows

Answer: Home Improvement

This is one of those games that makes it onto quite a few "worst of" lists, but not always for its gameplay, more for its ridiculous storyline. As fans of the TV show will know, Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor never battled against mummies or dinosaurs yet that was the premise of this game. Basically, when about to debut a new line of power tools on his TV show, Tim discovers that someone has taken them and hidden them all over the movie lot. Obviously he has to recover these tools but along the way, several bizarre creatures will attempt to stop him. Luckily these enemies can be defeated with the tools that every good tool man has at his disposal, such as a nail gun, a chainsaw, a flame thrower and dynamite! The best thing about this game however was the fact that it didn't come with an instruction manual, instead it contained a book that simply said, "Real men don't need instructions"

6. A "Top Ten Games of all Time", "Chrono Trigger" offers a time-machine known as Epoch, taking you to different eras of history. What's the name of this machine?

From Quiz Time Gentlemen Please

Answer: Wings of Time

The 1995 console role-playing game "Chrono Trigger" takes you to different dimensions as well as historical time periods, using an acquired time-machine "The Wings of Time", also called Epoch. "Chrono Trigger" was developed as a Super Nintendo game with a fantastic soundtrack and lots of villains and magic.

7. Three days is all you have to stop the moon from crashing into the land of Termina in what "Legend of Zelda" game?

From Quiz A Race Against Time

Answer: Majora's Mask

There's a catch behind this. As Link falls into the land of Termina in pursuit of a magical mask dealer, he stumbles into a world beset by a horrible curse-- that of the Skull Kid being controlled by Majora's Mask and who's set the moon to crash into Clock Town at the end of seventy-two hours. This doesn't mean in-game hours though; you have even less time to get the job done. Fortunately, Link's Ocarina of Time contains the power needed to turn back the clock. You can alter time (and go back in time) by playing the magical songs given to him. It does undo a great deal of progress, though. You are turning back time, after all.

8. The infamous Hot Coffee mod caused which popular video game to fall under public scrutiny, especially after it led its being re-rated as an 'Adults Only' release?

From Quiz Hot Coffee, If You Know What I Mean

Answer: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

While the "Grand Theft Auto" series, over the years, has pushed the envelope with mature themes due to the general gimmick of navigating an open world environment, usually in seedier cityscapes and criminal underbellies, "San Andreas" was the first one to face severe backlash when a quick mod released for the game (known as 'hot coffee') allowed players to engage in a gratuitous encounter. Its existence fuelled discourse about appropriate content for gaming media and countries had the game re-rated to avoid those under the age of majority getting their hands on it. Later versions of the game were released with the assets of the in-game event removed altogether, but not before civil lawsuits could sink their teeth into the developers at Rockstar Games. The "Grand Theft Auto" series has since gone on to release new titles to record-breaking sales, often being cited as a reason for devastating blows to periodic blockbuster film intake at the box office.

9. In what online PC game do you, as a monkey, fire darts at balloons?

From Quiz Balloon Blitz

Answer: Bloons

Made by Ninja Kiwi, "Bloons" has since grown to feature many sequels and spin-offs over the years, usually "Tower Defence" games. In the game you aim with the mouse, charge up your shot, and fire in order to try and pop the most balloons you can. Clearing the screen of balloons will unlock proceeding levels with greater difficulty. As the games go on, more types of balloons are introduced, more obstacles are added, and the game becomes all the more tricky with puzzles.

10. In which "Legend of Zelda" game will a sail allow you to navigate the seas in the King of Red Lions?

From Quiz Sailing in Video Games

Answer: Wind Waker

A talking boat painted red and with a lion's head at the bow, The King of Red Lions is known for being the main mode of transport in "Wind Waker" (GCN). When you pick up a Sail at Windfall Island you can go whichever way the wind directs on the high seas and, once you claim the Wind Waker, you can go pretty much anywhere. The King of Red Lions makes cameo appearances in the "Super Smash Bros." series and in "Hyrule Warriors Legends".

11. A lengthy and climactic bridge scene can be found in The Parish, a stage in what zombie horror game?

From Quiz Bridges in Video Games

Answer: Left 4 Dead 2

The campaign of "Left 4 Dead 2", if played in order, takes the survivors (a group consisting of Coach, Ellis, Nick, and Rochelle) from Georgia to New Orleans, ending in 'The Parish' with the characters racing across a lengthy bridge to catch a military escape helicopter that will take them away from the carnage. Once the bridge is opened up, it's a mad dash to escape the horde. The bridge is destroyed by an air strike shortly after these events while any survivors are flown to a quarantine elsewhere.

12. The video game adaptation of what 1980s film was allegedly responsible for an industry crash in 1983?

From Quiz Oh. What Fun...

Answer: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

You know it has to be bad when the publishers collected tens of thousands of copies of the game back in the mid-1980s and buried them in a landfill in New Mexico just to be rid of them. Sure enough, they were all still there when they unearthed the site in 2014. But just to give a bit of history, this horrible game, known for being inane and completely beside the point of the film, ended up being one in a small handful of poorly-developed titles for early-'80s consoles that led major companies into an industry recession. Many credit Nintendo with bringing things back around when they launched the NES in North America a couple years later. Now the horrible "E.T." game is history...in the Smithsonian.

13. What 1984 game created by British designer Sandy White for the ZX Spectrum platform is considered the first video game to feature zombies?

From Quiz Zombies Ate My Video Game

Answer: Zombie Zombie

For those too young to remember, the ZX Spectrum was an early computer sold primarily in the UK during the 1980s. The ZX Spectrum competed with and had much the same capabilities as the Commodore 64 system. Software developers produced several thousand games for use on the ZX Spectrum and the platform spurred creative graphic design development. "Zombie Zombie" was designed by British programmer Sandy White and featured then revolutionary 3D graphics. The game was released by Quicksilva in 1984 and is often cited as the first "zombie" themed video game. "Zombie Zombie" dropped players in the middle of a city overrun by slow moving animated dead people. The zombies could be killed when players pushed them over the edge of buildings using bursts of air from a rifle. Sandy White had previously developed the innovative computer game "Ant Attack" and much of the same software and graphics were used in developing "Zombie Zombie".

14. This sequel, released on the Xbox 360, used the console's Kinect accessory instead of the massive controller that shipped with the first release in the series. Which game put players in the virtual cockpit of a tank at war?

From Quiz I'll Have Another

Answer: Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor

The original "Steel Battalion" had one of the most unique controls ever made for home gaming systems when it was released in the early 2000's. The control featured two joy sticks, 40 buttons. A sequel using the same controller, "Steel Battalion: Line of Contact", that was nearly as popular with fans. The next-generation version didn't turn out as well received. The Kinect accessory, which was supposed to track players movements, rarely worked as designed which often caused players undo frustration.

15. 58 Works released a puzzle game for iOS devices in 2011 in which the player must figure out how to open a succession of numbered doors. The difficulty increases with each sequential door. Which of the games below fits the description?

From Quiz And Then You Open The Door

Answer: DOOORS

Door number one only requires the player to tap the door for it to open, but the puzzles become more difficult and the clues become scarcer. One interesting note is that it's not just about input but may also require that the phone be titled, shaken or even turned upside down in order to open a door. The first release of the game was for iPad and iPhone, but it was later released for Android devices as well. This was the first puzzle escape game released by 58 Works.

16. "New Leaf" was the subtitle for a game in what popular Nintendo simulation series?

From Quiz A New Leaf

Answer: Animal Crossing

"Animal Crossing" first released on the Gamecube back in 2001 and quickly became a popular 'Player's Choice' title for the system. As such, sequels emerged on a number of devices in later years beginning with the DS, then continuing on the Wii and 3DS. The 3DS version, released in 2012, was called "Animal Crossing: New Leaf", and it allowed players to, as is typical in the series, take the role of a person moving into a new village and living amongst its people, often animals, while performing different tasks and unlocking new things. The game, allowing players to link up online, was extremely well-received.

17. On the opening screen of this 1996 game, you can squish the forehead, ears, nose, and mouth of the titular character. What game is it?

From Quiz Get Your Head in the Game

Answer: Super Mario 64

Turning on "Super Mario 64" would bring you to a screen of Mario's head and, before you pressed Start to enter the game, allow you to shift some of his facial features around with the analog stick and A button, creating funny faces that could stick until you released the Z button. The added feature was popular enough to reappear in "Mario Party" (N64) as a mini-game called 'Face Lift', in which you had to match Bowser's squished face using an exemplar and your own copy.

18. Which little purple dragon stars in a series of platform games for the PlayStation, and travels around the Dragon Realms accompanied by his friend Sparx, a dragonfly?

From Quiz Scaly Monsters and Nice Sprites

Answer: Spyro

Spyro first appeared in the game of the same name, released for the PlayStation in 1998, in which he had to free other dragons who had been crystallised by Gnasty Gnorc's spell. His little friend Sparx acts as a guide and helps him gather gems.

19. An oft-green-clad hero makes his way around a land of monsters, sages, dungeons, and triforces in what game series release by Nintendo?

From Quiz Legends of Legends of Legends...

Answer: The Legend of Zelda

"The Legend of Zelda" started back in 1989 on the NES console and has since become one of Nintendo's leading franchises. Starring Link, an adventurer who (usually) sets out to save the land of Hyrule from evil forces, the series actually takes place over several timelines and follows a basic format in which the player moves from dungeon to dungeon fighting bosses and collecting important items. "The Legend of Zelda" has appeared on nearly every console and handheld in the Nintendo line-up and, like "Mario", is considered required playing for any retro gamer.

20. Super Mario conquered space travel by flying around the cosmos in what Wii game released in 2007?

From Quiz Space Races, Chases, and Faces in Gaming

Answer: Super Mario Galaxy

"Super Mario Galaxy", by and large, was the main "Mario" series spin-off for the Nintendo Wii. The follow-up to the 3D platforming adventures in "Super Mario Sunshine" (GCN), "Galaxy" took Mario into the cosmos, flying from star to star, as he collected Lumas and Star Bits on his quest to save (who else?) Princess Peach from (who else?) Bowser who, this time, has taken to the infinite vacuum of space. The game was so popular that a direct sequel, "Super Mario Galaxy 2", was released a short time later. Both games used the Wii Remote's motion controls to add a new dimension of maneuverability onscreen.

21. In this Nintendo Gamecube game, you play as Olimar, the captain of a ship landing on an exotic planet populated by red, blue, and yellow creatures. You can use these alien beings for the first time in what game?

From Quiz Strength in Numbers

Answer: Pikmin

"Pikmin", released in 2001 as a Gamecube exclusive, became a surprise hit for its unique playstyle. In the game you took on the role of Captain Olimar, a pilot for the Hocotate Express who crashed on another world. Using the local denizens, whom he dubbed Pikmin, he would be able to rebuild his ship to fly home. Each of the Pikmin performed a different task; blue ones, for instance, could go into water while others would drown. "Pikmin 2" appeared on the Gamecube in 2004 and it took another nine years for a new game in the series (on the Wii U). Olimar also became a character in "Super Smash Bros." in later years.

22. Starman is an item used by which character to gain temporary immortality against foes?

From Quiz Invincible

Answer: Mario

Starman is a classic piece of "Mario" iconography, appearing in games as far back as the original "Super Mario Bros.". When Mario or any other character grabs hold of one, they will flash multiple colours and destroy any enemies in their path, impervious to hits. While this won't save Mario from pitfalls or lava (nothing ever really does), it will come in handy for a short time. These are usually featured in the platforming games of the series but are also used in "Mario Kart". They're also considered of greater importance in the item hierarchy of the series, above mushrooms and fire flowers specifically.

23. In 1987, this game created by Konami involved precise movements and poor jump mechanics, all hindrances in your path leading you to a battle with Dracula. What's the title?

From Quiz You'll Never Finish Alive!

Answer: Castlevania

A standard side-scroller for NES gamers, "Castlevania" was a horror-themed game featuring Frankenstein's monster, the Grim Reaper, and Dracula as the final boss-- you traveled in and around castles and dungeons to reach the end of the level culminating in a boss battle, but along the way enemies would hack at health mercilessly with single hits, precise movements would be needed to go up stairs or jump over small gaps, and you'd be marred at every turn by an inability to jump forward (only up and down). Nonetheless, "Castlevania" was popular enough to warrant sequels, leading up to releases on later Nintendo and Sony consoles. It was a bestseller and many of the later games in the series continued with critical praise.

24. In this Nintendo 64 game, a certain super character ends up leaping for a rabbit character by the name of Mips, chasing him through a flooded basement. What's the game?

From Quiz Chasing It Down

Answer: Super Mario 64

If you've played through the Nintendo 64 launch title "Super Mario 64" you may remember Mips, a small, yellow bunny with a wise-guy attitude hippity-hopping through the flooded basements of Princess Peach's castle. If you happen to snag the bunny while he hops around (the best way being with a long dive jump) you'll receive a star for your efforts-- one of many hidden in the castle without actually jumping through a portrait. You can catch Mips again, later on, after you start heading upward to the towers. Tired of chasing that rabbit around? I'm sure we could set you up in a race with Koopa the Quick...

25. "The Labyrinth of Time" is loosely based on which mythology?

From Quiz Strolling With Trolls

Answer: Greek

Created by Terra Nova Development, this game starts with a commuter subway train being sucked into another dimension. Daedalus then explains that he has been forced to create a labyrinth that will enable King Minos to invade and conquer through the space time continuum. The player has to destroy the labyrinth before this happens. It was intended to be the first in a series of games, but was not successful and the sequels were never produced. It can currently be found on Apple iPad and iPhone.

26. Appearing in arcades in 2000, what dance-based video game by Bemani used only hand motions to play?

From Quiz Every Swing You Take...

Answer: Para Para Paradise

Although Bemani (part of Konami) made the "Dance Dance Revolution" series first (or "Dancing Stage" in UK), they also made the lesser-known "Para Para Paradise" in 2000 for arcades and, to a lesser extent, consoles. The arcade version featured five motion-sensing paddles above the player as they moved their hands in time with the song and on-screen prompts; the console version placed the pads on the floor. Much like "DDR", the game relied on accuracy, good timing, and practice. It featured many famous "DDR" artists (eg. Naoki, DJ TAKA, etc.) but failed to swing new players into the genre. The genre of Para Para, as a dance, never really picked up outside South Korea and Japan.

27. Look west if you wish to be baled out here, but there's an Easter egg in Warden Sharp's secret room at the Arkham Asylum. Around which DC Comics' character is Arkham Asylum based?

From Quiz The Supersonic Easter Egg Hunt

Answer: Batman

Warden Quincy Sharp has a secret, no, make that a super secret office in which he has hidden details of land that has been purchased and blueprints of plans to extend the asylum. The whole point of this Easter egg was to plant the seeds of a sequel to the game - Arkham City. There was one tiny flaw with this great idea ... they had made it so hard to find the egg that it wasn't discovered until after the sequel had hit the shelves. The allusions to "west" and "baled" in the question reference Adam West and Christian Bale who have both played the role of Batman on the big screen.

28. What is the first name of Fox McCloud's father?

From Quiz "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" Original Games

Answer: James

Bill was one of Fox's friends from the Cornerian Flight Academy. Greil was Ike's father's name. Martin was some random name I came up with. It is unknown if James actually died or not. He appears and reappears in several games.

29. Which city, known for its rat like people and sounding like the alternative name for Myanmar, is known as the 'Realm of Eternal Rain' in "Final Fantasy IX"?

From Quiz Kingdom of Rain

Answer: Burmecia

"Final Fantasy IX" (2000-2001, PSX) is the ninth (surprisingly...) in the popular role playing game series. "FFIX ' particularly has a more cartoon-like style to differentiate itself from the more technologically based VII and VIII. Burmecia is visited by the main party shortly after its invasion from Alexandria, and is the first of the major cities to fall. The music and rain set the scene as there are virtually no survivors left after the attack... and the offence doesn't stop there. The alternative name for Myanmar is Burma, a country in southeast Asia.

30. Available on the NES, what 1985 video game featuring an obnoxious dog required the use of a light gun known as an NES Zapper?

From Quiz Bullseye!

Answer: Duck Hunt

"Duck Hunt" was part of an interesting combo deal back in the day. When players purchased an NES console in North America they would also receive a combo copy of "Super Mario Bros." and "Duck Hunt" on the same cartridge. "Duck Hunt" required an NES Zapper light gun to play and the premise was simple: shoot down the ducks. All you needed to do was point at the screen and pull the trigger. Players of the game may remember the snickering dog that appeared at the bottom of the screen who laughed when you missed the birds. Yeah...no one really cared for that dog. The game also features a Clay Shooting/Skeet mode in which you shoot clay pigeons.
