Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Super Mario needed to find six of which of these in a 1992 Game Boy platformer?

Answer: Golden Coins

"Super Mario Land: 6 Golden Coins" was one of the earliest handheld Mario platformers on the market and one of the earliest games to feature perennial Mario antagonist Wario in the final boss role. The game involved getting to the end of every world of the game to collect Golden Coins and, ultimately, fight Wario to save his castle. Unlike other games in the "Mario" series, the game allowed Mario to visit any stage of the game at any time. Also, any game over required the player to refight every boss to collect their coins. Such stress.

The distinctive style and changes in this game in the series are often attributed to it not being made by Nintendo figurehead Shigeru Miyamoto.
2. Golden feathers in "Banjo-Kazooie" granted which of these abilities to the bear/bird combo?

Answer: Invincibility

While the Golden Feathers have no real use for Banjo alone, Kazooie can make use of these items to protect the two characters from serious dangers throughout "Banjo-Kazooie" and "Banjo-Tooie". Debuting in the first game's third level, Clanker's Cavern, the player needs to run through a gauntlet of garbage disposal slicers within the belly of the mechanical beast in Gruntilda's Lair to find Bottles the Mole; he'll teach the technique. Banjo and Kazooie can also accumulate Red Feathers in the game.

Their use: flight.
3. What Nintendo game series includes sequels subtitled "The Lost Age" and "Dark Dawn"?

Answer: Golden Sun

A series of handheld RPGs released by Nintendo and developed by Camelot Software Planning, "Golden Sun" has somewhat of a cult status amongst players due to its tendency to be a sleeper hit upon release. Critically lauded, the games ended up becoming exemplars of traditional, turn-based role-playing and brought fantasy genre fare (a la "Final Fantasy") to the GBA and Nintendo DS at a time where completely different genres paved the way.

Much of the storyline revolves around the uses of magic and alchemy.
4. In what Rare-developed James Bond game can players use the Golden Gun to kill enemies with one shot?

Answer: Goldeneye

Nintendo's Game of the Year in 1997 (released two years after the movie), "Goldeneye" was a hit for the N64, and made by a relatively small team no less. The game became a progenitor for many later console first-person shooters and was known for not only an extensive single-player campaign, but an endlessly fun multiplayer experience. Shortly after this game sprung to popularity, Rare created the "Perfect Dark" franchise, subsequently bringing it to the Xbox 360 when they were bought by Microsoft.
5. In "Pokémon Red and Blue", the water-psychic-type Golduck is coloured gold.

Answer: False

While Psyduck was always considered a bit of a dummy on the "Pokemon" anime, his evolved form, Golduck, was a lot more cunning and versatile. Both are water/psychic-type Pokemon, but only Psyduck is coloured gold. Appearing at #054 and #055 on the Kanto Pokedex (respectively), these creatures were originally found around the Seafoam Islands. To evolve a Psyduck into a Golduck, it needs to reach level 33.
6. Which of these video games uses Gold as a currency?

Answer: World of Warcraft

"World of Warcraft's" economy is an immense one, and players can buy and sell items using gold, silver, and copper if need be. "World of Warcraft", as an MMORPG, is a particularly noteworthy example in terms of online economies because of its gold farming industry in which typically-Chinese players simply grind out gold and sell it, online, for real cash.
In the way of other currency, "The Sims" (and the rest of the "Sim" series) uses Simoleons, "Kingdom Hearts" uses Munny, and "Final Fantasy VII" uses Gil.
7. What "Dota 2" hero, named after a scientist who converts metal into gold, earns extra coinage from Bounty Runes?

Answer: Alchemist

Alchemist, considered a carry hero, usually attains strength through amassing wealth at a rate superior to other characters in the game due in part to a passive ability called Greevil's Greed, allowing him to get bonus gold from creep kills and Bounty Runes.

This, along with proper jungling or laning techniques, will set Alchemist up to be a late-game dominator since farmed purchases will allow him to build all the necessary items. In addition, Alchemist is able to purchase Aghanim's Scepter, a relatively expensive, but versatile item, and gift it to other heroes.
8. What early NES game was sold with a gold cartridge in the United States?

Answer: The Legend of Zelda

While the Japanese version of "The Legend of Zelda" was released in a regular, grey cartridge in its home country, the American version of the game was sent out in a shiny, gold cartridge. Fortunately, the game turned out to be extremely popular, selling millions over its lifespan. Nintendo later brought back the gold cartridge for the release of "Majora's Mask", a later "Legend of Zelda" release on the Nintendo 64. Nintendo also released "DuckTales" and "Superman" on gold cartridges.
9. To get five 'gold stars' in "Rock Band", you need to play a song perfectly.

Answer: False

While this is close to true, players can achieve gold star status on a song if they achieve a particular score equal to a percentage over the five-star score reliant on the amount of band members in the game. In other words, if a guitarist, bassist, vocalist, and drummer are all playing at the same time, their combined efforts can net a gold star score if they properly play the notes and have synergistic bonuses.

In "Rock Band 4", progress towards a gold star can be seen if you surpass the five star score on any given track.
10. In video game development, what does it mean for a game to 'go gold'?

Answer: It's ready to be sold

A gold copy of any given game is a master copy created by a developer for use in publishing; when the developer has gone through all the beta tests and worked out all the kinks in the coding, a gold copy is created and sent off to be copied for sale.
That being said, referring to a game for being a 'Gold Edition' is often a tactic performed by publishers to rerelease titles, including extra content, and often for the sake of collectors.
