Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The "Battletoads" were all originally green. Which one, perhaps because of his inflamed spot, officially became brown?

Answer: Pimple

"Battletoads" is a beat-em up platform game introduced by Rare in 1991 as direct competition to the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". The main protagonists were all named after skin conditions; Rash, Zitz and Pimple (the only singular spot and Boilz does not exist). Their initial antagonist was the Dark Queen.

All three were created in a medium shade of green. Since the initial launch Rash, the "cool" dude of the crew, has changed skin colour to become a bright shade of green. Zitz, their leader and tactical genius, shifted to a lighter green with hints of yellow, then moved to olive green before settling on a bluish-green arrangement. That leaves Pimple, the gentle giant of the crew, who moved to a light tan colour before it settled on a deeper shade of brown.
2. What is the name of the protagonist in "Beyond Good and Evil"?

Answer: Jade

"Beyond Good and Evil" is an action adventure game, first released in 2003 for the for the PlayStation 2, Microsoft Windows, Xbox and GameCube platforms. The main character is Jade who is a photographic journalist, skilled in the martial arts and has joined up with an underground movement that is working towards exposing an alien conspiracy.

True to her name she is an overkill of green; green headband, green jacket and green pants... even her lipstick is green. Fortunately, her shirt is white. Despite that, her arrival on the video game scene was a breath of fresh air. Jade wasn't targeted at a specific audience which seemed to be the want for game developers at the time. Apart from that she was also a character that people could relate to, not just someone who was good to look at.

All of the other colours named above are shades of blue.
3. He is the main man of the "Halo" series and goes by which of the following names?

Answer: Master Chief

Master Chief has become the mascot for the "Halo" series and, to a degree, Xbox itself. I nearly said he was the face of the series but had to rein that in because we don't get to see his face. Dressed in his iconic green armour he is a man who doesn't say a great deal and this has become a two-edged sword for the franchise. On the one hand some will claim it is a weakness for the character, while others say that it allows the player to inhabit the character more readily.

Known as a "Spartan", the chief was built for war and was trained in the art from birth. Yes, he lacks a bit of depth and he doesn't speak a lot, but when he does, he comes across with this gruff voice that sounds as cool as Clint Eastwood in his "Dirty Harry" persona. "Halo" is a series of military science fiction first-person shooter video games that launched with "Halo: Combat Evolved" in 1991.
4. Reptile was only a hidden opponent in the original version of "Mortal Kombat" (1992).

Answer: True

Reptile became a playable character in "Mortal Kombat II" (1993) and has become one of the mainstays of the franchise. He did appear in the original "Mortal Kombat" but he was an absolute nightmare to unlock and it would be fair to say that there were many who never got the conditions right to bring him about.

Originally Reptile was clone of Scorpion and Sub-Zero. He, his real name is Syzoth, was a green poison version with humanoid skin. In "Mortal Kombat II", this was replaced with scales to make him look more... um, reptilian. He has been a faithful servant to the Outworld Empire and his master Shang Tsung.
5. What type of creature is Bulbasaur?

Answer: Pokemon

Bulbasaur is a Generation 1 Pokemon and, as his name implies, he is part plant and part dinosaur... and he's green from head to toe. At birth a seed is planted into his back and this grows into a giant green bulb. This bulb holds nutrient rich seeds and hides two slender vines that provide nourishment through photosynthesis. Bulbasaur will evolve into Ivysaur at level 16 and then Venusaur at level 32.

He's a cute little fella as Bulbasaur but the dinosaur part of him gets less cute as he evolves.
6. Appearing in which series of video games is our protagonist who is dressed in green combat armour and goes by such aliases as Corporal Flynn Taggart and John "Reaper" Grimm?

Answer: Doom

This is Doomguy. He is also known as Doom Marine and Doom Slayer... and for those that get tired of three syllables, simply call him Slayer. Decked out in green armour, he appeared in the original series of "Doom", way back in 1993. Everything about Doomguy is pretty vague.

He has a grey space helmet which hides his features, he doesn't say much at all and his backstory was kept deliberately hazy and unclear. Even his real name has been kept from us though, part of that thinking, is that he assumes the identity of the player.
7. Which of the following characters from "Chrono Trigger" is green?

Answer: Frog

"Chronos Trigger" is a 1995 role playing game that is set in a world similar to Earth and is played across three different time period; a pre-historic age, the Middle Ages and a post-apocalyptic future inhabited by humans and robots.

Frog was original a squire named Glenn who was turned into a frog by the evil sorcerer Magus. Magus also killed Glenn's best friend Cyrus. Why was he turned into a frog? I am not sure but it may have been that as a human he had green spiky hair and his armour was also green. True to his squire born manner Frog is chivalrous and has dedicated his life to protecting the Queen of Guardia, the lovely Leene. And, if he gets the chance, he also plans to avenge his friend Cyrus.
8. Yoshi, who appears in "Super Mario World", is a green dinosaur.

Answer: True

Yoshi is not just a dinosaur, he is the cutest dinosaur in all of the Mario worlds. He made his first appearance in "Super Mario World" (1990) and has been a constant sidekick to Mario ever since. He's even managed to get his series of games.

Yoshi is green but he does have the ability to change colours. This is usually done when he gains certain offensive abilities such as wings or fiery breath. He may also change colour temporarily after eating certain fruits or flowers.
9. Which of the following is the mean, hot-tempered leader of the Kremlings in the "Donkey Kong" series of games?

Answer: King K. Rool

K. Rool, a play on "cruel" is a green, mean, fighting machine. He also sports gold armour and a ridiculous red cape, which makes him look more like a Christmas decoration (but I'm not going to tell him that) than one of the fiercest antagonists that the Kongs have had to face. They (the Kremlings) are continually trying to steal the Banana Hoard on Donkey Kong Island... don't ask... crocodiles and bananas, it doesn't make sense, but just go with it.

K. Rool first appeared in "Donkey Kong Country" (1994) for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and he has been described as being to Donkey Kong what Bowser is to Mario. K.Rool has also found himself in "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" (2018).
10. Who has been known as the "hero of time" and "the protector of Hyrule" and possesses the Triforce of Courage?

Answer: Link

Link is the hero in the "Legend of Zelda" series of high fantasy action-adventure video games that first launched in 1986. Link has been the main hero of those games. However, don't make the mistake of thinking that he is one person. Over the years there have been many incarnations of Link. They are chosen by the Golden Goddesses and each one is infused with the spirit of the hero and are tasked with saving Princess Zelda and the land of Hyrule

Sometimes the new incarnations are given names to differentiate them from other Links. For example, the Link in "Ocarina of Time" (1998) was called the Hero of Time and in "The Wind Waker" (2002) he's the Hero of Wind. Yes, I know, not very original. That aside, for most of these years, our hero of green has been just that... but wait, gasp, horror, shock... in "Breath of the Wild" (2017), after thirty glorious green years, someone has decided to dress him in a blue tunic. Sacrilege!
