Earthbound Trivia Questions

1. As one man in Threed explains, what factor makes the Runaway Five able to drive through the haunted tunnels of Threed?

From Quiz
"Earthbound": All About Threed

Answer: Noise level

Ness and Paula can't walk through the tunnel themselves, but they are able to get through by car when hitching a ride with the Runaway Five. The Runaway Five, however, continue on to Fourside after dropping the two of them off, leaving them seemingly stranded in the eerie town. An elderly man near the town's eastern tunnel explains how they can get through: "The band was really noisy, so the ghosts didn't approach the bus. It must be great to be so happy-go-lucky, huh!"

2. Which PSI ability can NOT be learned by Poo?

From Quiz "EarthBound": Do YOU know your PSI?

Answer: PSI Fire

While Poo cannot learn PSI Fire, he can use all the other PSI moves listed in this question. He shares Freeze and Thunder with Paula, while only he can use Brainshock. There is, however, something I should point out. Poo is the only character who can use Thunder Omega. Paula makes up for this by being able to use Freeze Omega.

3. In which area do you get your second permanent party member?

From Quiz "EarthBound:" To Eagleland and Beyond!

Answer: In/Near Happy Happy Village

You technically get Paula in a shack near Happy Happy Village, which I consider the third town in the game. It's actually very near Twoson, past Peaceful Rest Valley, but it is still considered a separate town. You get an important item in this shack, the Franklin Badge, which deflects lightning attacks. Another thing of note that I should bring up: you are unable to use PSI Teleport to go to Happy Happy Village. Way to go, Shigesato Itoi!

4. What is the last name of Frank, the first boss?

From Quiz "EarthBound": What's the Name?

Answer: Fly

Yes, Frank has a last name, but it is only seen in the character roll call at the end. If you do not know, he is the head of the Sharks, the local ruffians of Onett, Ness's hometown. You must beat him in order to progress in the game. After defeating him, he allows you to rest with him for free. How nice!

5. How many times do you have to see the Runaway Five perform?

From Quiz Circumnavigate the World of "EarthBound"

Answer: 2

The first and last times, it plays the same tune. The middle one is a little different, and is optional, since you only need to go to the owner's office. Therefore the answer has been changed to two. These guys are used to get into Threed for the first time, and take you there after getting Paula back.

6. What is the name of the band that you meet in Twoson that helps you several times in the game?

From Quiz "EarthBound" Facts

Answer: Runaway Five

One of the many things that they do to help in this game is allow you to ride their Tour Bus through the haunted tunnel between Twoson and Threed. Their loud and cheerful music is too much for the ghosts to handle.

7. What color is Ness' backpack?

From Quiz Earthbound

Answer: yellow

'Such a cute yellow backpack!'

8. Who "stares into your soul"?

From Quiz "Earthbound": All About Threed

Answer: Zombie gatekeepers northwest of the graveyard

There are two zombie gatekeepers guarding the entrance to Grapefruit Falls and Saturn Valley. They're not fightable, but the entrance does later become accessible.

9. Which offensive PSI does not do damage?

From Quiz "EarthBound": Do YOU know your PSI?

Answer: PSI Flash

For those of you who have played "Super Smash Bros", then you probably know this Ness-exclusive attack. While considered an "offensive" PSI, it actually acts much differently than others. It affects all enemies, and it gives different random effects: crying, numbness, feeling strange (confusion), or even instant death. It's more likely to destroy an enemy at its highest level.

10. What is the warped mirror world that Ness and friends find behind the counter of a cafe?

From Quiz "EarthBound:" To Eagleland and Beyond!

Answer: Moonside

Ahh, Moonside. After Paula gets kidnapped in the Fourside department store, she winds up somewhere else. To find her, Ness and Jeff have to do different tasks, including defeating the Mani Mani statue in Moonside. I'm stuck in this part.

11. What is the name of the female singer that you see in the Topolla Theater in Fourside?

From Quiz "EarthBound": What's the Name?

Answer: Venus

At one point, you have to get Venus's autograph to progress through the game. She gives it to you on a banana peel. Why? Well, you have to get her autograph so you can get one of the melodies. How? Give the autographed banana peel to the curator of the Fourside museum and he will tell you something important. I won't spoil it, though.

12. The first boss you face is called:

From Quiz Circumnavigate the World of "EarthBound"

Answer: Starman junior

Hands-down the easiest fight you've ever had to fight in any RPG: you can't die, and in four turns the fight is almost always over.

13. What is the name of the first "Your Sanctuary" location in the game?

From Quiz "EarthBound" Facts

Answer: Giant Step

Each of the "Your Sanctuary" locations reveal a part of the song recorded on the Sound Stone. Giant Step is first, Milky Well is third, Rainy Circle is fourth, and Pink Cloud is sixth. Though they all don't have to be found in this order, this is the sequence of the song fragments recorded on the Sound Stone.

14. What is the name of the town you start in?

From Quiz Earthbound

Answer: Onett

Coincidentally, it has the number one in it, while Twoson, Threed, and Fourside have consecutive numbers in their names.

15. How many areas in the game that you can teleport to are named for numbers?

From Quiz EarthBound

Answer: Five

There are the ones that everyone knows, Onett, Twoson, Threed, and Fourside, and there is the often overlooked Tenda Village. You will be teleporting between these areas a lot.

16. What important item does Apple Kid deliver to Ness while in Threed?

From Quiz "Earthbound": All About Threed

Answer: Zombie Paper

Apple Kid is an inventor that Ness meets in Twoson (not to be confused with his useless neighbor, Orange Kid) that provides Ness with several helpful inventions throughout the journey. Apple Kid calls Ness and tells him about his new invention called Zombie Tape, which he promptly sends over by pizza delivery man. The item can be used in the central tent to lure the town's zombies (including the gatekeepers in the northwest side of town), which allows Ness to continue on to the third "Your Sanctuary" location.

17. What is the beach-town where you can sample Magic Cake?

From Quiz "EarthBound:" To Eagleland and Beyond!

Answer: Summers

Summers is, as I said, a beach-town over the sea. It is right near the port-town of Toto. After having the Magic Cake, you take control of Prince Poo of Dalaam until you complete a certain task. Afterwards, you can buy Magic Tarts from the Magic Cake lady, which restore some Psychic Points (PP). Everything in Summers is also very expensive, so buy at your own risk.

18. What is the name of the boss of Giant Step, the first sanctuary?

From Quiz "EarthBound": What's the Name?

Answer: Titanic Ant

The first sanctuary boss is the Titanic Ant. Electro Specter was the boss for Lumine Hall, the seventh Santuary, the Shrooom! was the boss of Rainy Circle, the fourth Sanctuary, and Carbon Dog was the boss of the eigth Sanctuary, Lava Spring. If you do not know, you are required to get each of the melodies in order to defeat the final boss.

19. There is a village near a waterfall, behind which lies Master Belch's base. What is the name of this village?

From Quiz "EarthBound" Facts

Answer: Saturn Valley

The "Mr. Saturns" live in Saturn Valley. When talking to them, the dialogue does not display the normal font; it is a more abstract and difficult to read font.

20. Which character is never in your party?

From Quiz Earthbound

Answer: Apple Kid

Buzz Buzz and Pokey both join you in the beginning. Brick Road joins you in Scaraba.

21. What is the name of the first character that gets Teleport Beta?

From Quiz "EarthBound": Do YOU know your PSI?

Answer: Poo

Poo, the prince of Dalaam, is the first character you get Teleport Beta from. He has it after completing "Mu Training" with him by eating the Magic Cake. Ness DOES have the ability to use Teleport Beta, but it's MUCH later in the game. And, of course, Paula is unable to use Teleport at all.

22. What is the first area where you find UFO enemies?

From Quiz "EarthBound:" To Eagleland and Beyond!

Answer: Peaceful Rest Valley

Although you can find UFO's in all of these areas, you first encounter them in Peaceful Rest Valley, which connects Twoson to Happy Happy Village. These are lil' UFO's, but they get upgraded in later areas.

23. What sea monster do you fight when sailing from Summers to Scaraba?

From Quiz "EarthBound": What's the Name?

Answer: Kraken

Yup, the Kraken. Surprisingly, it looks more like a snake than like a squid. Later, you encounter a "Bionic Kraken," which is more powerful. Be careful, though; he's VERY powerful.

24. ________ Cup of Coffee.

From Quiz "Earthbound" Enemies

Answer: Scalding

Scalding Cup of Coffee is found in the Department Store after the lights are turned off.

25. Poo, the prince of Dalaam, must complete his training in order to be worthy to join Ness and the others. What is the name of the place that Poo must go to in order to train?

From Quiz "EarthBound" Facts

Answer: Mu

Mu is where Poo must realize that the mind is the most important tool one has in battle. He is taught this by having his arms, legs, eyes, and ears ripped off (temporarily, of course).

26. Approximately how many minutes does it take to get a pizza delivered?

From Quiz Earthbound

Answer: three & 3

It's hard to stock up on pizzas. You get to sit there and wait 3 minutes even if the pizzeria is next door.

27. Where in Threed are Ness and Paula ambushed by zombies and ghosts?

From Quiz "Earthbound": All About Threed

Answer: Inside the hotel

In Threed, a mysterious blonde woman is found standing outside of the hotel. Upon sight of her, she dashes into the building, leading Ness and Paula into a bedroom upstairs. There the two find themselves ambushed and imprisoned underneath the cemetery, until Jeff arrives from Winters with his trusty Bad Key Machine and saves them.

28. How many offensive PSI moves are there in the game?

From Quiz "EarthBound": Do YOU know your PSI?

Answer: Six

In total, there are six offensive PSI moves in the game. These are: Rockin, Flash, Fire, Freeze, Thunder, and Starstorm. Freeze is seriously overpowered, but it only hits one enemy at a time. Fire is less used, but it attacks multiple enemies in a row. Starstorm and Rockin basically do the same thing: they deal massive damage to all enemies. Also, while it does not do damage, Flash can do all sorts of stuff, and it affects all enemies on screen.
