From Quiz
Riding the Rails Across Australia

Answer: Sydney and Perth

Sydney NSW, on Australia's east coast, is on the Pacific Ocean, while Perth, the capital of Western Australia, lies on the Indian Ocean. The flying distance between the two cities is just under 3300 km; by road it is close to 4000 km. The rail journey has an official track length of 4352 km.

2. Which class of tram is considered the quintessential Melbourne tram?

From Quiz Melbourne Trams

Answer: W class

The W class was introduced in 1923 as an effort to standardize Melbourne's tram fleet. Over a period of 43 years the design was progressively refined, with a total of over 700 trams produced. They are considered one of the enduring symbols of Melbourne.

3. The first trains in Australia were used in coal mines in Newcastle in 1831, but where did the first passenger train run, in 1854?

From Quiz Trains in Australia

Answer: Melbourne to Port Melbourne (Victoria)

Victoria had just undergone a huge expansion because of the Gold Rush, and grew very quickly. The rest of Australia followed suit, with the population increasing tenfold in just two decades. In 1855 a line between Sydney to Parramatta opened, with another service opening between Adelaide to Port Adelaide the following year. Sydney and North Sydney had to wait until the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge to be connected, and that did not happen until 1932.

4. In most cities, Central Station is the hub of train operations. In Brisbane, it is not. Which station is the departure point for long distance trains?

From Quiz Queensland Rail - CityTrain Suburban Network

Answer: Roma Street

Roma Street Station is the point from which all distances are measured in Queensland. For example, distance marker 33 at Dakabin Station represents 33 kilometres to Roma Street. It has six suburban platforms and three others that cater for interstate or intrastate passenger services. Although Roma Street officially has ten platforms, Platform 3 is not used. Central Station is unique as it is reached from either direction by tunnels. Brunswick Street Station is located in the northern inner city suburb of Fortitude Valley. Gloucester Street Station no longer exists. It was formerly located on the Beenleigh line between South Bank (formerly Vulture Street) and Park Road Stations, but was closed by QR (Queensland Rail) in November 1978.

Answer: 1770

9. The Indian-Pacific completed its first journey in 1970. Why was it not possible for a single train to cross the country before that?

From Quiz Riding the Rails Across Australia

Answer: Each state built railway lines with their own choice of gauge

During the 19th century, each colony made their own choice of railway gauge: most commonly narrow (1067 mm), standard (1435 mm) or broad (1600 mm). There were also regional variations in lines constructed for the use of a single local industry, such as the sugar cane trains in Queensland, which had an extremely narrow gauge of 610 mm. This made interstate travel by rail quite complex, as it was necessary to actually change trains at the state borders. Conversion to a standard gauge began in earnest in the 1950s, and completion of the east-west standard gauge line in 1969 made it possible for the Indian Pacific to start its first journey on 23 February 1970. It was near the end of the 20th century before all state capitals were connected by a single common gauge track, but there continue to be a range of different gauges used for local trains around the country.

10. Melbourne's first modern tram was the Z1 class. They were based on a type of tram from which European city?

From Quiz Melbourne Trams

Answer: Gothenburg

The Z1 class was based mechanically on the M28 tram from the Swedish city of Gothenburg, but the body was produced locally by Commonwealth Engineering. These trams suffered from numerous teething troubles and gained a reputation for unreliability; future orders of trams were derived from German technology. Of the 100 delivered from 1975-79, around 25 remain in service.

11. Tropical Queensland has many trains running on very narrow gauge lines that carry one particular product. This crop must be processed with 12 hours of harvesting for best results, but what is the important cargo?

From Quiz Trains in Australia

Answer: Sugar cane

Most of the lines run on 610mm (2 feet) gauge, which is cheaper to build and upkeep. The trains have small engines, but they are capable of towing over a kilometre of rolling-stock carrying over 2000 tonnes of cane, directly from plantation to mill.

12. What rail gauge does the CityTrain network use?

From Quiz Queensland Rail - CityTrain Suburban Network

Answer: 3 Feet 6 Inches (Narrow Gauge)

The entire CityTrain network, and indeed all of QR's operations within the State of Queensland, are operated on narrow gauge. Whilst standard gauge tracks do run form the New South Wales border to Roma Street Station, these tracks are owned and operated by the Rail Corporation of New South Wales. There are, and never have been, any broad gauge tracks in Queensland.

24. Interstate rivalry between New South Wales and Victoria created all sorts of problems over Australian history and one involved rail travel. Why did passengers have to change trains at the border city of Albury?

From Quiz Trains in Australia

Answer: Different rail gauges in each state

Communication mixups, stubborn officials and just plain bad luck led to a multitude of gauges throughout the new colony. There were up to eight gauges operating at one stage in the 1850s, ranging from 2' to 4' 8.5". The rivalry has created many problems between the two states almost since Melbourne was founded in 1835. It even led to a neutral national capital, Canberra, having to be constructed in 1927, midway between the two state capitals. The whole rail shemozzle was not resolved until 1962. Prior to that, it was 'all out, all change' from one platform to another at Albury station, usually in the middle of the night.
