Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What northern station is the junction of the Main Line and North Shore Line?

Answer: Hornsby

When this question was written in 2006 it is a 4 platform station, upgrading is currently under way to change it into a 5 platform station with plans to be finished by 2007 sometime.
2. Known commonly as Central what is the name of this station for Intercity and Interstate trains?

Answer: Sydney Terminal

In August 2006 Central celebrated its 100th anniversary. It is the main station in the Cityrail network, though it has not always been this way Redfern used to be the major station.
3. Near Auburn and Granville is a station that you would need to go to if you wished to change trains and head out on the Carlingford line. What is the name of this station?

Answer: Clyde

Just go one stop further to Rosehill for the Horse Races. On weekends a special "Race Day" train will operate from Hornsby and terminate at Rosehill with Clyde being the last stop beforehand.
4. What station is known for the Day of the Roses tragic train disaster?

Answer: Granville

The Granville railway disaster occurred on January 18, 1977 and is Australia's worst rail disaster. The 6:09am from Mt Victoria derailed and hit the supports of a motor vehicle bridge. A total of 83 people perished in this tragic accident.
5. What station in the Newcastle region is the main stop for XPT trains and is also a Freight Train and Intercity train depot?

Answer: Broadmeadow

Also alight at this station to go to the Newcastle Knights home games. If travelling from Sydney to Maitland and other Hunter Valley stations change here to use the Maitland Line.
6. What train was meant to be ready for the 2000 Olympics but was not ready until a year or two later?

Answer: Millennium Train

Supposed to be ready for the 2000 Olympics but not put on the rails until 2002. This train has been commonly referred to as one of the most uncomfortable trains on the Cityrail network.
7. On the South Coast what is the final stop?

Answer: Bomaderry (Nowra)

Trains to Nowra are not electric powered but diesel.
8. From which station would you alight at and get a bus to former train station Toronto?

Answer: Fassifern

The trains used were the old 'Red Rattler'. As a kid living at nearby Fennell Bay it was great fun to get on the old trains and go all of two stops to Toronto.
9. After leaving Central what is the first stop on the Airport Line?

Answer: Green Square

This part of the East Hills line is privately owned and charges extra to exit at the Domestic and International Terminal stations. Because of this, not many people choose to use it as the price is very expensive indeed. It is cheaper to travel to Newcastle and back than to go one way to the airport.
10. Which of these stations on the Epping to Chatswood Line opened in 2009?

Answer: Macquarie University

The station is located underground, and has a single island platform.
