Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the terminus for the Carlingford Line?

Answer: Carlingford

As its name implies, Carlingford is the terminus of the Carlingford Line. Trains operate hourly from Carlingford to Clyde.
2. During the early 2000s, 23 of the 'silver suburban' trains were withdrawn to be converted into a trailer. What is the carriage number of the motor car that became trailer carriage T4701?

Answer: C3864

The conversions were mainly Series 1 motor cars, but some Series 2 motor cars were involved. This was just after the removal of 'Tulloch' type trailers, which created a shortage of motor cars.
3. What colour is the target plate of trains that operate on the Northern Line?

Answer: Black

The target plate is a small piece of coloured metal with a 'set number' on it (e.g. S136). Trains with green or blue target plates operate on the Inner West, South, Airport, East Hills and Bankstown Lines. Trains with black target plates operate on the Western, Northern and North Shore Lines. Red target plated trains operate on the Illawarra Line.
4. What are the stations in the City Circle?

Answer: Central- Town Hall- Wynyard- Circular Quay- St James- Museum- Central

North Sydney, Redfern, Bondi Junction, Milsons Point and Edgecliff are not City station. A ticket to 'City' allows you to alight and/or board at any of the stations in the City Circle, as well as Martin Place and Kings Cross.
5. In which year was the Waterfall Train Disaster?

Answer: 2003

Outer Suburban Tangara Set G7 was running a timetabled service from Central ot Port Kembla. It hit a top speed of 110 km/h before crashing in forest area between Waterfall and Helensburgh. The train was written off and seven people passed away.
6. In 1995, vandals went into Mortdale sheds overnight and torched two suburban carriages. What are they?

Answer: C3905 and D4047

These two carriages were taken to Redfern sheds and scrapped. Note that T4047 was not the answer because the carriage was yet to be converted prior to its demise. D6127 and N5172 were involved in the Wentworthville crash and were both scrapped. D6114 and N5114 were involved in the Concord West accident and D6114 was scrapped. OD6831 and ON5816 were involved in the Waterfall train disaster and were both scrapped.
7. How many platforms are in use at Central Station?

Answer: 25

Platforms 1 to 3 are for CountryLink and Indian Pacific services. Platforms 4 to 15 are for Intercity, Outer Suburban and early-morning services. Platforms 16 to 23 are suburban platforms. Platforms 24 and 25 are underground and serve the Eastern Suburbs Line, which links into the Illawarra Line. There are another two platforms at Central that aren't being used.
8. In which year did the Millennium Train enter service?

Answer: 2002

They were originally planned for the 2000 Olympics but sadly the delay in their arrival meant they were unavailable until 2002. They are the replacements for the 'Tulloch' type trailers, all of which have been withdrawn.
9. Where do L-Sets operate?

Answer: Wollongong

There are three L-Sets in service, running local Wollongong sprints. L-Sets are three carriage silver suburban sets.
10. What is the carriage number of the leading motor carriage in the Glenbrook train disaster?

Answer: DIM 8067

DIM 8067 was rebuilt after the accident, and renamed DIM 8020. However, due to superstitions, DIM 8020 and DTD 9031 were coupled together and did 'The River' service, a sprint from Wyong to St Marys. However, this service was later discontinued, DTD 8031 has been inserted into another set. DIM 8020 has since been stored in MainTrain Auburn, in relatively new condition.
