Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many colors are there in the Australian shepherd breed, according to the ASCA?

Answer: 4

The colors are: red, black, blue merle and red merle. Although ASCA recognizes only four, there are different variations in those colors.
2. If you were to breed a blue merle female with another Aussie, what color should you NOT breed her to?

Answer: Red or Blue Merle

You should never breed two merles together. Try to figure out why in the next question.
3. Why shouldn't you breed two merles together?

Answer: The offspring can be born blind and deaf

When two merles are bred, the offspring can be born blind and deaf. Poor little babies!
4. What were Australian shepherds originally bred for?

Answer: Herding livestock

Australian shepherds are primarily bred for herding livestock! (mine prefer ducks and horses!)
5. What does ASCA stand for?

Answer: Australian Shepherd Club of America

The ASCA works hard to keep the Australian Shepherds Club a success! They take on unwanted Aussies to find them loving homes, where there will never be a threat of euthanasia. They have even driven across the country to pick up Aussies dropped off at pounds!
6. The father of a litter of Aussies is called the sire. What is the specific name for the mother of the pups?

Answer: Dam

The father is the sire, the mother is the dam. A bitch is any female dog.
7. Where were Aussies developed?

Answer: The United States

Would it surprise you to learn that the Australian shepherd is the only livestock working breed developed in America? Contrary to his name, the Australian shepherd is not an Australian breed at all!
8. Which of the male and female Australian shepherd dogs is taller?

Answer: Male

Females height range from 18 - 21 inches. Males range from 20 - 23 inches.
9. On a black tri, what are the 3 colors?

Answer: Black and White with Copper Trim

10. In the ASCA Herding Competitions, what are the three animals the dogs will herd?

Answer: Cattle, Sheep and Ducks

Go herd those sheep, cattle and ducks! (my dog and the ducks. lol)
