Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the border collie developed?

Answer: Scottish/English border

The border collie originated in Northumberland on the Scottish/English border. They were descended from old British droving breeds with some spaniel added. Because of their outstanding herding skills and capability to work with any kind of livestock, they soon became popular.
2. What are the border collie's exercise requirements?

Answer: Extremely active, needs a lot of exercise

Fast and agile, border collies have boundless energy that is extremely difficult for the average owner to satisfy. It's best if they have a job to do, or to get them involved in some kind of physically demanding sport. Border collies have excelled in agility, flyball, flying disc, and many more.
3. Which of these is true about most border collies?

Answer: They are highly trainable

Not only are the physical demands of this breed difficult to cap, they have intellectual demands as well! Considered by some studies to be the most intelligent of purebred dog breeds, they must have plenty of mental stimulation in a day, preferably combined with their physical activity. They've proven to be excellent problem solvers and learn quickly.
4. What is the border collie's trainability like?

Answer: Highly trainable, they learn fast

Border collies are very intelligent, responsive, and quick to learn. They have excelled in obedience. They were bred to be like this, so that even when the dog is far from the owner herding livestock, it would still respond to every command from the master. Socialization is very important to prevent shyness and other behavior problems.
5. Border collies make excellent pets for young children.

Answer: No

Border collies have a very strong herding instinct, and may be snappish. They are especially known to nip the heels of running children, bikers, joggers, and other moving objects. Some border collies are highly reactive and sound sensitive, making them poor choices for children.

However, this is not to say that they cannot fit in with younger families. Many border collies have done great with young children, provided they've been properly trained, socialized, taught to be gentle, and most importantly: supervised. Border collies often do great with older children and teenagers, though.
6. Because of their independence, border collies do fine left alone for long periods.

Answer: False

Border collies are sociable dogs, and need lots of ongoing attention to be happy. If left alone for long periods of time they will become bored, making them destructive and neurotic. They are known to be escape artists, and may chew, dig, climb, or jump to escape an unentertaining kennel.
7. What is the dominance level of border collies?

Answer: Highly variable

Border collies may be any of these options. There is no solid level of dominance for this breed. Many border collies actually have a molded temperament based on the person that raised them. Most border collies will, however, have a time in their life (through adolescence) where they will test their master's authority. You can get though this period by providing consistent and firm leadership.
8. Which of these is the border collie known for while herding?

Answer: Having an intense stare

The border collie will often lower his head with his ears raised, staring directly at the livestock. This stare was once thought to have hypnotized the livestock so that they would do as the border collie directed them.
9. Border collies are naturally great with all other pets.

Answer: False

Border collies should be socialized to all other pets. Most border collies do well with other dogs of the opposite gender, but might be aggressive with dogs of the same gender. They should not be trusted with small non-canine pets, although many border collies have done great with family cats.
10. How might you describe the border collie in a few words?

Answer: Intelligent, responsive, energetic, focused, determined

The border collie certainly isn't for everyone. Few people can meet up to their high demands. However, the border collie is a gold mine for someone looking to get into agility, flyball, herding, drug detection, search and rescue, obedience, police work, and many more activities. To be truly happy, the border collie needs a lot of: ongoing attention, extensive daily exercise, and a job to do.
